LucasArts brings back catalog to Steam

[UPDATE] Publisher launches digital distribution effort this week with Loom, The Dig, Star Wars: Battlefront II, and more in first wave of retro releases.

One by one, the list of publishers conspicuously absent from Steam is dwindling. The latest casualty from the list is LucasArts. The publisher today announced plans to make a portion of its back catalog available to the digital distribution game store later this week.

LucasArts hopes gamers will
LucasArts hopes gamers will "Dig" their old games on Steam.

Starting Wednesday, July 8, Steam users will be able to download 10 of the publisher's PC games, ranging from long-out-of-print adventure games like Loom and The Dig to more recent fare like Thrillville: Off the Rails. Naturally, LucasArts' twin titans are represented, with multiple Star Wars and Indiana Jones titles in the mix.

The full list of LucasArts back-catalog games to arrive on Steam this week follows below:

Armed and Dangerous
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures
Loom
Star Wars Battlefront II
Star Wars Republic Commando
Star Wars Starfighter
The Dig
Thrillville: Off the Rails

Nostalgic gamers disappointed that their favorites aren't on the list can hold out some hope for the future. LucasArts said this first volley of releases is just part of its "new mission to revitalize its deep portfolio of beloved gaming franchises."

Other parts of that mission include the recent revival of the Secret of Monkey Island franchise, which sees a new episodic adventure from Telltale Games begin this Tuesday on the PC. A special edition of the original Secret of Monkey Island--complete with an optional graphics overhaul--is set for release July 15.

[UPDATE] Via a subsequent Twitter post, Lucasarts promised that more back-catalog hits are on the way. "For those who want more games, this list is part one," read the tweet. "It's just a few guys who have to remake these for modern systems."

YES!!! I've been trying for years to find a way to play The Dig again! Still have the CD, but my ten-year-old self scratched it beyond recognition back when this game was in stores.

I never played any of the really old-school adventure games. Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and Day of the Tentacle better be up speedy-like.

I want Police Quests (the entire series) 7th Guest, 11th Hour, Quest for Glory, kings quest(series), Gabriel Knight, Day of the Tentacle, and why not some space quests with our beloved Roger Wilco while we are at it. You bring those back and I may just turn on my PC to play video games again(via PC) again. Though I would love those on 360 too.

You know, the bring in The Dig....but not Full Throttle...tell me someone remebers that game, and all the greatness that is was. Come on, anyone remember the classic line of making him interact with an object, 'I'm not putting my mouth on that." That game was full of adventure, fun, and laughs.

The more people that are introduced to the masterpiece that is Grim Fandango and the early LucasArts classics when LA actually did some original non Star Wars thing the better. Their adventure games are memories for life I tell you!

Apparently they are patching these for Vista and newer video cards when they go to Steam. Sure would be nice if those patches got rolled out to people who ALREADY bought the games. In the case of BF2, there is a crippling crash related to sound recording devices that has never been fixed. Republic Commando is flaky under Vista, as is KOTOR2. Alternatively, how about making the keycodes activate on Steam, so you're paying customers who supported these titles can play them on the new CD-free platform?

Hmmmm... seems odd that Grim Fandango isn't in the first wave, but maybe they're trying to make it compatible with newer OSs and hardware before they push it out. I'll keep my hopes up.

Some of those are pretty iffy titles. The Dig? That game was so obscure it was downright unplayable. I loved SW Battlefront 2 a lot, and Fate of Atlantis was fun. If it's not up there yet, Grim Fandango should be next!

I want to see NEW LucasArts games, D@MN IT! The lack of Star Wars games for current consoles is becoming very frustrating. It's BS that the newest installment of the Old Republic is on PC only! I am definitely angry about that being that the first two were at the top in console sales history! Thanks for giving back to the fans, Bioware and LucasArts..

I just played Republic Commando recently on my 360, and that game was so terribly underrated. Definitely a lot better than it gets credit for. If you haven't played it, I highly suggest getting it off of Steam, along with Battlefront II.
