Love it or hate it, PlayStation's free-to-play business is booming

Revenues up 50 percent year-over-year, company says today during Game Developers Conference.

The free-to-play business at PlayStation is booming. Today during a Game Developers Conference presentation, Sony revealed a handful of statistics that the company says speaks to the "huge potential" of free-to-play on PlayStation.

Across PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, free-to-play revenues are up 50 percent year-over-year, Sony said. The company did not, however, disclose specific revenue figures.

There are currently around a dozen free-to-play titles available today across PS3 and PS4, Sony said. Some of the big ones are Blacklight: Retribution, Warframe, and DC Universe Online. Sony is also working on PS4 versions of Planetside 2 and EverQuest Next.

Here are some other statistics Sony revealed today during the presentation.

PlayStation 3:

  • ARPPU (average revenue per paying user) comparable to PC ranges
  • Consumers use PlayStation 3 more hours/week than any other console
  • Most engaged consumers who spend the most money

PlayStation 4:

  • ARPPU skewing higher than PlayStation 3
  • Over 90 percent of PS4s connected to the Internet
  • Over 80 percent of users have downloaded digital content

All:

  • Free-to-play revenue up 50 percent year-over-year
  • Conversion rates (from free to paying) vary from 3-15 percent
  • Average play sessions upwards of 90 minutes

PlayStation's free-to-play business hasn't been without its struggles, however. Speaking during the panel today, Zombie Studios (Blacklight: Retribution) studio director Jared Gerritzen said he's been frustrated by how long Sony's certification process takes for game updates. This is especially pressing, he said, because free-to-play games need to release new content regularly to keep players engaged.

PlayStation free-to-play manager Sarah Thomson said Sony is aware of developers' concerns surrounding patch certification turnarounds and pledged that Sony will get quicker going forward.

Gerritzen also warned of the doubled-edged sword of microtransactions. He said this business model can be problematic if developers don't design with the consumer in mind.

"Free-to-play can go down a very dark road," Gerritzen said.

parently because people can't take a challenge and pay to get stuff this is a bad thing. anyone who says pay to win are simply people who couldn't win by playing for free, otherwise you wouldn't complain.

<< LINK REMOVED >> OR... they don't want to spend 24 hours a day for a month trying to unlock one weapon. In my case, I just won't play them. I do not have that kind of time to spend on them, nor do I want to drop the kind of money they are asking to get the good stuff. When you cannot pay $60 and reasonable access to everything in the game, its not worth spending. Warframe is fun, but for how much it costs, and how long it takes to get all the parts, and the time to build a warframe or decent weapon, I would rather spend my money and time on something that is reasonable.

And its apparently, not "parently," like something an average parent would do.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> parently is a perfectly useable word my friend its pronounced pa-rent-ly from old french used in this context ""Parently, it's not important.", and no if you can't get a specific item within a day then you're just not fit for playing a hard game, i have played more then enough free to play game to get maximum enjoyment for minimal cost. easily played over 10 of them and iv spent a total of £12.76p usually to get an odd item many of the time because i wanted it and not even need it.

My PS3 is turned on about 6-18 hours a day, so I guess that makes sense. However, my laptop still tops that. This one is turned on all the time unless I'm sleeping or out of the house.

Free to play 99% of the time is a total lie. The real titles are normally Pay to Win or Pay to Demo or pay to Overcharge etc. The mass majority of people who play F2P crap are kids under 16 who don't have money or mooch off their parents so much they parents just give them cash to shut them up. Any true gamer wouldn't go near F2P if they were paid to play it. F2p is hurting the industry and abusing loyal gamers the REAL gamers. Pay to play is always and will always be the best as ya get what you pay for.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Team Fortress 2, Is free to play. I play it all the time. Planetside 2, free to play, great fps. League of Legends, Dota 2, I could go on. Just because you have had bad experience with free to play games...does not mean its bad.

Be very wary of microtransactions. Don't be deceived by those 99 cent purchases. I know people who have maxed out credit cards buying them.

Where is Planetside 2 already? I'd actually pay upfront for what I want in that game like a normal game price and enjoy it. It looks like a larger version of Battlefield with scifi.

Planetside 2 boils down to infinite respawns at one spawn point until one of the teams get bored. Once I spent 3 hours just trying to control 1 base.

I have played. Bunch of them, and I have format almost nothing to do so. Some were good games, but nothing great jumps out. I think it is ruining core gaming though, and have thought so for years. Candy crush has more people playing it then mario. That makes me sick.

Are these games only free to play with PS plus? Because if so then it's not really free to play.

<< LINK REMOVED >> as of now you don't need PS+ to play them. You can pick a PS4 and start with Warframe (current best f2p available), Blacklight or DC Universe Online.

The only upgrade is that PS+ let's you get the updates when the PS4 is on standby mode so next time you want to play you won't have to wait for a patch to download

None so far. Might change in the future, but there's no current ftp game to demand ps plus subscription in order to play. Or as far as I know.

Companies like EA, Zynga, King and scummy indie developers who follow their examples are to blame for making the Free-to-play scene such a hated place by gamers.

There are a few games out there that do FTP properly. Even the first Plants vs Zombies did it right.

Free to play is the biggest scam in the gaming industry, the games are supposed to be free to play yet developers makes a bunch of money sometimes more than full retail games

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not really a scam. You know how many fools are willing to throw in money for frivolous things, especially things that provide nothing but vanity? There are enough people who fall into this category that's causing these types of games to be successful.

I'm very happy to hear of their success with free-to-play. Sadly, I will not be a part of it. I dislike free-to-play titles, though I see the appeal for many others.
