Logan's R Rating Confirmed, As Director Warns Viewers About "Brutal Violence" And Nudity
The movie will have "strong brutal violence and language throughout," as well as nudity.
The upcoming X-Men movie, Logan, has officially received its rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. As expected, the film, which is to be Hugh Jackman's last outing as Wolverine, will be rated R.
This was confirmed today in a tweet from director James Mangold. Elaborating on the rating, Mangold said the film was handed an R classification for its "strong brutal violence and language throughout, and for brief nudity."
We have known for a while that Logan was pursuing an R rating. Last year, Mangold revealed that Jackman agreed to a paycut so the film could receive the restricted rating. R-rated movies do not historically do as well at the box office as those rated PG-13, which the previous Wolverine movies were. There are of course exceptions; one recent example was the smash hit Deadpool.
Last October, Mangold tweeted some notes from a Logan script that hinted at something more hard-hitting than the previous Wolverine movies. "If you're on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying, CG f**kathon, this ain't your movie," they state. "In this flick, people will get hurt or killed when s**t falls on them."
Logan also stars Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Boyd Holbrook, and Richard E. Grant. It hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
Recently, Jackman revealed that Logantakes place in a different universe than the previous films. "It's not really beholden to timelines and storylines in the other movies," he said. "Obviously Patrick Stewart was in there so we have some crossover, but it feels very different and very fresh."
