Little Big Planet Karting is coming to the PlayStation 3 in 2012, Sony announced this morning. Sony has tasked ModNation Racers studio United Front Games to develop the title, with series creator Media Molecule also on board in a supporting role.

In Little Big Planet Karting, players will take part in competitive and cooperative kart racing across a range of modes. On top of straightforward kart races, gamers can participate in objective-based missions, boss battles, and minigames.

Much like in ModNation Racers, in Little Big Planet Karting, players can customize their Sackboy characters, karts, and more. Customization in the game doesn't end there. The title also sports a level editor that allows players to build courses and decide their own racing rules. Gamers can share their creations with users across the world through the PlayStation Network.

Little Big Planet Karting is hardly a surprise. Last month, Sony confirmed the game was in development but did not share further details.

An earlier report suggested Little Big Planet Karting would run in 3D and support a new PlayStation Move racing wheel.

[UPDATE] Sony confirmed to GameSpot this afternoon that Little Big Planet Karting will have both stereoscopic 3D and PlayStation Move support.

In addition to Little Big Planet Karting, United Front Games is at work on the multiplatform action game Sleeping Dogs.
