Listen to New Theme from Legendary Secret of Mana Composer

Hiroki Kikuta will finish the song if Unraveled is funded.

Unraveled is a 16-bit role-playing game for PC in the style of Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana that's currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.

If you're a fan of Secret of Mana, you might want to check out Unraveled as the team behind it recently announced that Secret of Mana composer, Hiroki Kikuta, is writing the game's main theme song. You can hear a sample of the enchanting track below.

On the Kickstarter page, Kikuta is quoted saying, "I'm always looking for fabulous projects to get me excited. When I saw Unraveled, I felt strongly that this game was special. It has substance. The setting and message are very unique and create a beautiful and emotional world that I wish to explore through my music."

Composer Dale North will also lend his talents to the game, composing the main score.

What you hear above is a draft of the main theme. If you want to hear the final version, Unraveled will have to first hit its full funding goal of $15,000.

The game's story follows a little girl whose family has gone missing at a ship breaking yard, and Unraveled aims to bring attention to the real-world plight of workers in the ship breaking industry in India. You can find out more about the game on its Kickstarter page.

How can it be an RPG in the style of Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana? Chrono Trigger is a turn based game and SOM is action. They aren't even close to the same style.

@archlvt: Yeah I don't know what they're getting at there. They have screenshots of the battle system and it's not like Secret of Mana at all.

Maybe they just mean 16 bit style. I could see that.

@Thanatos2k@archlvt: You can view the battle system in action here. :) << LINK REMOVED >>

@archlvt: Maybe they meant the visual style.

Avatar image for TwinMatrix

@archlvt: Let's say, a soundtrack inspired by Secret of Mana, and a battle system inspired by Chrono Trigger (scripted battles, etc.). The comparison is just the easiest way to get the idea of the game across. :)

Hey! Aaron here, co-developer of the project. It's an honor to work with Kikuta-san. =^.^= Feel free to ask me anything!

@TwinMatrix: I just try out the demo and it's pretty fun! Combat is satisfying and I like that there are fewer but more meaningful battles as opposed to other games with excessive random encounters. This game looks promising and I recommend everyone with any interest tries the demo!

@drumjod@TwinMatrix: Thank you for checking out the demo! ^.^ Glad you enjoyed it!

Square Enix if you're listening: Secret of Mana HD remake please! :D Also an official translation/ port of Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2) would be amazing.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@derekscorp: To this day, I have no idea why Square refuses to localize Seiken 3. They have re-released every SNES game they have made MULTIPLE TIMES, but never Seiken 3. Why? WHY, you bastards!?

Yep I want HD remake please do it sqaureenix.

Avatar image for TwinMatrix

@playstationzone: I don't know, I'm not a fan of the "HD" 3D remakes of earlier Final Fantasy titles. I think the 2D is part of what makes them special. <3

It plays like a 16 bit turn based RPG and it features a pretty interesting combat system. The demo was quite illuminating. I donated.

@bunchanumbers: Thank you! Your support means so much to us. :) Working with Kikuta-san and Dale has been a dream come true!

makes me feel like im being held for ransom

@deth420: Hah, he's actually prepared this draft for the campaign because he believes in the game's scenario and social message. If the campaign is successful, he gets paid, and hence, completes the track. I think it's pretty remarkable that he was willing to prepare a draft without upfront funding of the game.

I liked Secret of Mana, but Seiken Densetsu 3 was better. Good thing we have emulators and fans dedicated enough to provide translations.

@Yomigaeru: Thanks for reminding me that I still have to play SD3

Secret of Mana was a super fun multiplayer experience, but the partner AI was absolutely awful if you had to play alone. The SNES had tons of single player RPGs that were way better than Secret of Mana.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@wEEman33: Secret of Evermore was not better.

I don't like the game. Cool music, though.

I mean this new one. Secret of Mana is fun. I never finished it, but I might one day.

Ehhhh... love the composer but that tune didn't deserve it's own story. If the soundtrack is anywhere near the quality of Secret of Mana, this will be an awesome sounding game!

Avatar image for TwinMatrix

@djwood84: Trust me, this song is PERFECT for the game. It encompasses the entire story. It's everything, but nothing specifically at the same time.

Avatar image for jayson_n

@djwood84: Well, GameSpot is the only place you can hear the track, so consider it a first look!
