Square Enix has released a playable demo for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which is now available on the Xbox Games Store.

Activating the game's Outerworld services and submitting a score in the Lightning Returns demo will give players access to the Siegfried outfit that can be used in the full game, Square Enix adds.

A PlayStation 3 version of the demo will be released on the PlayStation Store today in North America, with a release in Europe following tomorrow.

GameSpot's Kevin VanOrd recently posted his impressions after playing an early build of Lightning Returns. "Lightning Returns is chock full of prophecy talk, though I have yet to put all of its jumbled pieces together into a coherent whole," he wrote.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released on February 11 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I've actually noticed something quite funny about Final Fantasy. The games with a lot of voice acting seem to be the worst ones in the series, whilst the ones with little to no voice acting e.g. A Realm Reborn and 1-9, are the best games in the series. Maybe that should tell Square Enix something.

Yeah, this demo was pretty "Meh!" for me. Final Fantasy needs to move more towards a completely open world style if it wants to survive in today's gaming world. FFXIV A Realm Reborn is awesome because of the open world setting. One of the best JRPGs I've ever played actually. Oh yeah, do away with the turn based battle system. Its terribly dated and is absolutely crippling Final Fantasy at this point.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The game is supposedly open world and you are pretty much free to do whatever you want within the time limit (to some extent I presume).

I actually enjoyed the demo and I thought it more as a tutorial than anything else, I expect the final release to be better. However, I'll be waiting for some reviews before deciding anything.

@chano880 @jlenoconel I had heard that this game was open world, but this demo didn't feel like it for me. The controls still feel kinda clunky like the first XIII I played (haven't finished XIII or even played XIII-2). Lightening Returns feels too much like the rest of the XIII series for me, and should have been more about distancing itself from those games really.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I played 13 and 13-2 one of the best of the FF games I can say next to 7 and 10 and 10-2. I find open world games are not always the best games take skyrim for example worest open world game I ever played. and yet games with a blend of open and linear play really rule.

The whole social integration part of the demo is pretty wonky too.

Maybe it was a terrible pick to have this part of the game for the demo, but it was pretty terrible. It's basically Lightning running through some unimaginative corridors chasing down Snow who turned bad (or did he?) and we get to fight some monsters on the way that basically do nothing. The battle system was OK. We get to see Lightning dress up in the most silly looking outfits to ever grace the world of Final Fantasy. The battle system was made to be more "active", but it's actually just an ATB battle where you have to spend "action points" to do moves and if you're out of points you pick a different role so you can do some more moves.

Lightning can now jump and climb stuff, well we could do that in FFXIII-2 as well and I should say as far as the demo goes it adds absolutely nothing to the gameplay.

SE is moving towards action gaming instead of turn-based gaming and in the execution lies a flaw as far as I can tell. It's not fast paced, nor exhilarating. It's close to boring. It's bad enough we went from two controllable characters in FFXIII-2 to actually only one in this game. And even though I do like Lightning she's not interesting enough to carry the game on her own.

Just thought everyone should know, the battle system in this game is no bueno. If you though it wasn't interactive before, now you literally press and hold a button. I guess that's technically more work than just pressing a button to line up your moves? Maybe? Either way "It all ends here." Thank christ, this 13 saga needed to end after 1 game.

Uh no. That's not at all how it works. Unless you want literally the shittiest looking game ever. It's highly unlikely Square even still keeps the resources used to make FF7. They would have to literally rebuild the entire game from the ground up even if they did - FF7 was made with pre-rendered environments just like RE1, 2, 3, silent hill, fatal frame, and many other games.

I enjoyed FF13, but it lacked emotional story and gameplay, still I couldn't deny the very high production values and felt I certainly got my money's worth. I didn't get a "FF game" that are known for quality, production, story, gameplay, and hours of entertainment, but I did get a fine game for its time.

FF 13-2, well I am glad I waited several months before I played it. Not because it aged well but because it cost me 18$ dollars. Beautiful game but mediocre in many ways, especially story. I think I will have no problem waiting a while before buying FF13-3, and hopefully alot less in cost. By the way the reason they keep reducing the amount of people that you fight with ... costs less.

The thing is, instead of pumping out sequels why not take the same engine and graphics and just create an all new game and world. Many of the toolsets and graphics were used and passed around during 4th 5th and 6th gen systems. So what if some of the foliage from FF13 gets ported to Chrono Trigger 2013 or monsters from FF13 get new colors and abilities and put in Vagrant Story 2, or building textures get ported to Secret of Mana 4.

Another thing also - Final Fantasy games should charge more. An extra ten dollars is not gonna hinder sales for SquareEnixs flagship titles, especially if they return to the quality they were known for. I mean the same price for FF13 is the same for Madden NCAA 13 when they came out. Or the same as THOR movie tie in game for that year. A nissan truck is not the same as a Ford 150 with all the perks, nor should they cost the same. This is just what I think.

I think you're new to this, it will never happen. Only FFVII&VIII and MMOs FFXI&XIV are on PC.(if you don't count the emu.) As for FFXV it might come to PC, but probably not, only if it's a hit like FFVII&VIII or maybe they didn't ever make any PC singleplayer version after that because of the "argh ya matey" thing.

I think a completely revamped FF 6,7,8 with all new graphics, sets, and videos would still cost alot less then a brand new game from scratch. Do not change the story, maybe some voice acting during certain scenes (please no Lance Bass playing Sephiroth, makes me sad anytime I think of it), have two sound tracks original and orchestral revamp of all music, NO QTEs please, and do not touch the battle systems please.

You have a perfect road map for a game, all you are doing is putting a new coat of paint on it. The less you mess with the recipe the better. I have no doubt that not only would the millions of people who played the games 15-20 years ago buy it again but many new players would also buy this game. I think that SquareEnix lacks leadership and vision though, they new people who took over in 2003 have continued to chase gimmicks and the flavor of the day. They would rather make a crappy gimmicky game that sales well then create something that makes a larger profit over time for the quality of work. Instead of Skyrim they want to copy Disney's Cars.

Same here, facebook guy who can't read this. And I fear that is the case for many ex-Final Fantasy fans.

Perhaps rightfully so. The series is only a name at this point. And a worthless one at that.

Well just finished the demo! Not bad, infact better than I thought it will be :P the whole story is total wtf for me but the combat is fun, and the graphics are nice, albeit a bit low-res.

the only thing I am worried about is the time limit, I don't usually speed run through games lol

FF13 was my first FF game, so idk how much has it strayed from the series. Tried the demo for 13-2 and found it extremely boring so I didn't get that one.

I want to say that FF has lost what it used to mean and it's become too confusing of a series but if the games continue to sell than kudos to Square. FFXV looks awesome based on the gameplay they showed at E3.

I like that every game seems to have its own fanbase too. I gotta replay FFXII.

@JustPlainLucasI know! how about 5 million people buy a copy, make it a groundbreaking financial success, play it, discover that it sucks (just like the last 2) and complain that they should have trusted their instincts (and previous experience).

That will sure show Square Enix won't it! It's not like they will laugh all the way to the bank and then just rinse and repeat......like they have for the last 2 games.

I get where you are coming from....but you're wrong. ;)
