Life is Strange Live-Action Adaptation Announced

Square Enix partnering with Legendary and dj2 Entertainment on adaptation.

A live-action adaptation of Life is Strange, the critically acclaimed episodic game from Dontnod Entertainment, is in production.

Square Enix is partnering with Legendary Digital Studios on the project. Also involved is transmedia company dj2 Entertainment, which is also working on Sony's Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

According to a post on the Life is Strange Tumblr it will be a "digital series," indicating it will adopt a TV show format.

Legendary's Cory Lanier will oversee the project with Greg Siegel, senior VP of development of production for the studio.

"Life is Strange is one of those rare properties that combines incredibly developed characters and storylines with deeply engaging gameplay," said Siegel. "It lends itself perfectly to live-action imaginings. We couldn't be more excited to partner with Square Enix, Dontnod Entertainment and dj2 to bring the world of Arcadia Bay to life in an exciting new way."

"We're proud and excited to be working alongside Legendary to realise a new version of Arcadia Bay and Blackwell Academy complete with our rich cast of realistic, believable characters and memorable events," added Jon Brooke, VP Brand and European Marketing at Square Enix.

"Now that the first episode of the Life is Strange game is free to download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC, there's never been a better time to play or to introduce a friend to the beautiful world of Arcadia Bay."

As of yet a writer and director has not been announced. Legendary will begin its search to fill those roles "shortly."

The extent of developer Dontnod's involvement also remains unclear. GameSpot recently discussed the live-action adaptation with the studio and will have more information soon.

Let's hope the announcement on Legendary's official website, in which it calls the studio "DONTDOD" isn't an indication of the care and attention the series will receive.

On July 25, Dontnod announced Life is Strange - Episode 1: Chrysalis will be available for free indefinitely.

"Although our team set out to create an award-winning narrative we still cannot believe the response we've had from players of Life is Strange" said Dontnod chief executive Oskar Guilbert.

"We're really glad that Square Enix have decided to give the first episode away for free so more players can begin their journey and see why people have fallen in love with the game for themselves."

Since they said it will be a TV like format made me feel better. Because the first thought in my head was "Keep M.Night Shyamalan-digdong FAR away from this!!". I see how this would make choosing a story difficult. Though they could take this chance to explain more of the story than the game did. Like where'd her powers came from. What was up with Rachael (I sometimes think she also had re-wind powers but then got drugged and couldn't). Show more of a evolution on the Pricefield front. How the Tabanga fit into it all. And maybe who really stole the tablet with the cat pics. These are burning questions we must know.

Life is Strange does NOT "lend itself perfectly" for live-action. This text is in the beginning of every episode:

"Life Is Strange is a story based game that features player choice, the consequences of all your in game actions and decisions will impact the past, present and future. Choose wisely... "

That's taken directly from the slate as is, I literally looked it up just for this.

This project clashes with the very thing that made Life is Strange what it is - player choice. Establishing a series like this will DEMAND a canon experience. Unless, of course, the series has nothing to do with Max. It might work from the perspective of Rachel and Chloe? That would certainly be interesting, but take away the main gimmick of the game - which is control of time - and make the series quite plain.

@KaptenHaddock: I think they might be able to make it work with the time control, but yeah, it will still give you a canon story unless they show multiple options play out, which could be interesting, maybe even let viewers decide for themselves which option is actually played out.

Another videogame movie adaptation that will spend ten years in development hell until it's rushed to release with a crappy script and the wrong cast to receive lukewarm, unremarkable reception by critics and fans.

Yup. I'm excited.

@jvconroy: The only problem with your comment is you didn't read the article. It clearly says it's a digital series taking on a TV show format. Doesn't mean it's going to be a success, though. Remains to be seen.
