Now Playing: The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit Reveal Trailer - Xbox E3 2018 Press Conference

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Life is Strange is returning for a second season, and now we know when to expect it. The episodic narrative-driven adventure game will release its first episode on September 27. We don't have any details on the new storylines, other than the game will be divided into five episodes, but developer Dontnod says more details are coming in August. Check out the announcement tweet below.

Meanwhile, pre-orders of the game will go live next week, and will be timed alongside the release of The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit; it's a free, standalone game that was announced at E3 2018. Captain Spirit takes place in the same timeline and universe as Max and Chloe in Life is Strange. Some story elements and player choices will carry over in Life Is Strange 2. Get a look at the trailer for The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit in the video above. It comes out June 26 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

In other Life is Strange news, the franchise is getting a comic book series. Publisher Titan is partnering with Square Enix to release a comic line based on Life Is Strange, which is set to debut on December 4. It is available for pre-order now.

Life Is Strange's first episode was first released in 2015 and revolved around the story of Max Caulfield, who discovers she has the ability to rewind time. It was followed by a prequel called Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, which takes place three years before the original and focuses on Chloe Price. GameSpot reviewed all five of Life is Strange's episodes, and you can read them all starting with Episode 1.

Why are there so many old articles showing up? What has been updated?

I see nothing new.

If LiS2 can deliver the same levels of incredibly emotional, relatable, and exciting experiences as before, I will be extremely excited! I never thought this game series would be "my kind of game," but it's absolutely beautiful. Easily one of the best stories of any game I have ever played and I've been gaming for over 20 years. This studio harnesses some truly amazing talent that needs to be recognized!

@jayskoon93: Same! I’ve played hundreds of games in my 17 years of gaming and LIS was just another game sitting in my long backlog. I wasn’t expecting anything particularly special, just thought I’d play it after seeing it there for so long. I too never imagined it would end up being my favorite game of all time! I doubted Deck Nine in Before the Storm, but was amazed at how great they did too. Almost a tie with the original game for me (probably is).

Music to my ears!! Cant wait. I loved both Life Is Strange & Before The Storm, although the first LIS was by far my favorite. Hoping this next season sticks close to its roots.

Awesome news!

The original Life is Strange was truly one of those hidden games of this gen/last gen. While I was a little reluctant that it would be a great game after I played the first episode that quickly changed by the end of the 2nd.

I’m glad I didn’t put the controller down after that rather “slow” beginning as I was treated to an intense and emotional rollercoaster all climaxing to a great murder/detective type storyline with some great twists and turns.

I can’t remember for the life of me if this latest installment will be a sort of prequel (a la Behind the storm.) but I really hope it turns out to be a continuation of the 1st game. I think there are many out there who have a whole slew of burning questions still picking away in their head, especially after that crazy ending.

@videogameninja: Considering how different the two endings are, I have a feeling they will focus on another thread entirely. I like the way my version of Max's story ended, and I think I'd like to leave it that way, even though more Life is Strange does sound good.

@videogameninja: They say it's a spinoff, not a sequel...
