Levine explains why he killed BioShock movie

Irrational Games boss Ken Levine says after Gore Verbinski left the project, he "didn't really see the match" with the new director.

Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine has explained why he decided to kill the BioShock movie, which Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was at one time set to direct with Universal Pictures.

No Caption Provided

Speaking at a BAFTA event in London last night, as reported by Edge, Levine said the commercial shortcomings of 2009's The Watchmen may have led to Universal executives getting cold feet about green-lighting the project.

"There was a deal in place and it was actually in production at Universal, and Gore Verbinski was directing it," Levine said. "And what happened was--this is my theory--it's a very big movie, and Gore was very excited about it, and he wanted to make a very dark, what he would call a 'hard-rated' horror film, an R-rated film with a lot of blood. Then The Watchmen came out--and I really liked The Watchmen--but it didn't do well for whatever reason, and the studio got cold feet about making an R-rated $200 million film."

Levine said Verbinski was not interested in making a BioShock movie with a reduced budget, believed to be somewhere around $80 million, and so he left.

"And so they brought another director in, and I didn't really see the match there. Take-Two is one of those companies that gives a lot of trust to their creative people, and so they said to me, 'If you want to kill it Ken, kill it.' And I killed it."

Levine did not name this new director outright, though it was previously revealed that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intact) was brought on following Verbinski's departure. Fresnadillo dropped out a year ago this month.

"Which was weird, having been a screenwriter going around begging to rewrite any script to being in a position where you're killing a movie that you worked so much on," Levine said of canceling the movie. "It was saying, 'You know what? I don't need to compromise.' I had the [BioShock] world, and I didn't what to see it done in a way I didn't think was right."

The BioShock film was first announced in 2008, with Verbinski attached to direct. Production was halted the following year due to concerns over the project's ballooning $160 million budget. Verbinski clarified the film's fate in 2011, revealing that the BioShock movie's budget would only be approved for a PG-13 take on the material, a compromise he felt was unacceptable.

The BioShock series continues this month with the release of BioShock Infinite. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Verbinski and BioShock were meant for each other. Letting the project die when he left was the right decision.

I miss R rated movies. The movies of my teens and early 20s could never get made today because everything has to be PG-13. How many projects have been killed or fouled by studio insistence on the almighty PG-13?

Video game movies don't work for two reasons.

1. Hollywood types don't know how to translate games into movies.

2. Video game devs don't know how to make movies from games.

Until you get someone who knows both it'll never work. And especially not if it's a AAA franchise whereupon the publisher gets involved to meddle.

@Thanatos2k Actually the real reason they never work is not because no one can, but because no one tries to do it properly. A game based off a movie is nothing more than a cash in that will sell well no matter how bad it is based on the fact fans of the movie will buy it. its the same for the other way around.

It will take fans not buying mediocre piece of shit games, before youll see any effort being put into games that come from movies or the other way around. Why would a movie company or game company spend a fortune when they know the name alone will sell?

Well it's obvious. This movie needs a huge budget, it's a sci fi. And it will be bloody, thats for sure. So, a movie rated R, a huge budget, a script that cinema audience is totally unfamiliar about..? This seems like a little loss of money, isn't it? I think they should care about their games. Cinema is a different planet. Better for everyone.

@Badgamewontsell @Fartman7998 Lol. Just saying. It never was called 'THE Watchmen'. Sure, they were THE Watchmen, but the comic book and movie is only called "Watchmen". I mean, c'mon, why the disrespect?

The article talks about Levine killing a planned Bioshock movie and chooses a picture that looks like a Big Daddy who has hanged himself to emphasize the word "killing", lol.

I am glad to see they were not willing to sell out. Top marks. Last thing we need is another awful movie adaptation.

Good. Don't compromise the vision just for a few extra bucks from Hollywood. I think this will be better in so many ways in the long run.

You can't have a Bioshock movie unless it's R-rated.

No real shock there. It is a shame great films, like Watchmen for instance, fail to meet that kind of expectation.

My feelings on Watchmen (So weird, I just watched the ultimate cut again the other day, and it's SO GOOD) is despite its shortcomings to the comic (no squid, incorrect telling of Rorschach's beginning- to name a couple) it was still very true to the comic (more so than any adaptation of a comic I've ever seen) and is such a great film. Honestly the Ultimate cut makes it better (adding in The Black Frieghter, and its editted in surprisingly fluidly- it even has transitions that match so it's not like it just cuts to this other film which is pretty great, they really put their best foot forward on that) .

I don't know if BioShock really needs a film adaptation, as cool as that would be. Good on him, though. If they cant do it right, don't do it just because the opportunity is there.

Lovin Take2 more and more all the time. It's so great they didn't pressure him to continue on with it when he wasn't feelin where it was going.

@Fartman7998 @cornbredx I loved Watchmen for its gritty and dark story, the ending and everything leading up to it was great, but also how unhero-like the main characters were. I think that's some of the reasons why it failed commercially. It's not Avengers in any way. I like both, by the way. I hear the comic (haven't read it yet, but I want to read it) is even better and I guess that's why some didn't like it as much as I do.

@Fartman7998 Ya, exactly. Negligible differences. =)

As for who is the real hero, I think that is ultimately the point. Rorschach's journal did make it to the press, so the truth will be known, who the real hero is just depends on who you think is right really. Because in the end, good intentions pave the road to hell. People are not ever by virtue evil. Even when we disagree with someone philosophically or morally doesn't necessarily mean we are right and vice versa.

In most situation it could be argued "Who is right?" and I think Watchmen discusses that well without making you're mind up for you on that.

@Hurvl Yeah, you're right. It's not The Avengers at all. But that was the beauty of it! These aren't the Avengers, and they're not quirky Stan Lee characters with alliteration names. They're realistic people who are flawed, and have shady histories just like real people.
The story itself goes into some heavy literary themes. Rorschach is a tragic-hero, I believe, his fatal flaw being that he never would compromise. But that begs the question: did he fail? Who was the true hero in this movie? Was Ozymandias right? The movie was so well done. Sometimes I pop my "Ultimate Cut" in again to watch the final scene where Rorschach gets blown to bits and Nite Owl screams, "Nooooo!"

@Hurvl The comic is way better. But only superficially. Really the reasons I know why it's better are small changes made to the movie. If you never read the book, you would never know and if you read it after it would feel negligible.

The problem with the movie is not enough people who didn't know about it already liked it, and fans of the comic believe it is unfilmable and die hards stick to that not giving the movie a chance at all (even the co-author- Alan Moore- hates that the movie exists, I don't think he's even watched it) .

So super fans or minor fans already of the book, a lot didn't like the movie (I did but I'm a minority it seems). I feel if a lot of them saw the ultimate cut they may change their mind, but so many people are pissed about the squid thing (which is minute even though it does enrage me too- and I still think the movie is fantastic) they wont give it a chance at all.

I don't know. When it comes to Watchmen I don't think most people give it enough credit.

I will admit, though, the music cues are AWFUL! Zack Snyder has never been very good at picking music for his movies.

I doubt they could make a good Bioshock movie anyways. It's a good thing they're keeping the franchise intact.

'The Watchmen'? What the hell is 'The Watchmen'? It's JUST 'Watchmen'. Can't believe Ken, a self-touted comic book geek, of all people would make a mistake such as this!
