With BioShock 2 making headlines this week for being pushed back into 2010, the creative director behind the predecessor is talking about what he's doing instead of working on the underwater shooter's first sequel. In an interview with Gamasutra published today, Levine teased his current project in response to a question about the pace of expansion at his 2K Boston studio.

"When we thought about the shipping date of the project," Levine said, "we needed a certain kind of length for the title, because we had a scope and ambition in mind which is more ambitious than anything we've ever done. Even more, substantially more ambitious than BioShock. And we knew that was not going to happen overnight."

Levine has been rumored to be working on a reboot of the tactical turn-based strategy series X-Com. Speaking to GameSpot in March, the developer wouldn't confirm or explicitly deny the speculation.

"I will say that I'm probably the world's biggest X-Com [fan]," Levine told GameSpot, adding, "I won't say I'm working on an X-Com game."

Regardless of what his next project is, Levine isn't leaving BioShock behind entirely. He also told Gamasutra that he is writing a prologue and epilogue for a BioShock novel being penned by author John Shirley (City Come A-Walkin', Wetbones).
