Level-5 readies Girls RPG for 3DS

Professor Layton developer's Cinderella Life simulation aimed at creating more girl gamers.

It seems female gamers are more partial towards portable and mobile titles, a notion which may have led Level-5 to create something to entice more girls into pursuing the hobby, particularly in Japan. The Fukuoka-based company recently announced Girls RPG: Cinderella Life for the Nintendo 3DS on Famitsu.com, a simulation tailor-made for female audiences.

The game is based on a popular cell phone title called Kyaba Jo Pi, where players manage a hostess club to entertain VIPs, some of them being characters from series like Lupin III. However, the 3DS title was renamed as such to reduce the game's ties with the hostess profession. Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino, who will also be the game's executive producer, said that people might be against the idea of playing a game billed as a hostess simulator. Hino also stated that the game's core development staff is female.

Players control a custom avatar who has to work as a neosienne in a grand lounge/nightclub called The Castle in the town of Neo Ginza. A neosienne entertains clients by talking to them, getting them to order food, and showing them a fun time, be they pop idols, politicians, or CEOs. The game will use the 3DS's Spot Pass system to let players exchange digital business cards with others and have their customized neosiennes appear in each other's nightclubs. Players can spend their nightclub earnings by buying new clothes and furniture for their custom home in Neo Ginza.

According to the official website, the game is slated for a 2011 release, though the exact release date and even an English version have yet to be confirmed.

"...the game's core development staff is female." love it when a group makes members of its own look bad.

So the marketing geniuses at Level-5 apparently think female gamers want to play crap games. Way to get away from those stereotypes of unicorns and pink bows, not to mention the conclusion that could be drawn that they apparently think women can only work jobs like hostess.

...wow.... so who ever created this game thinks women enjoy serving men and consider clothing and furniture worthwhile rewards for their labour. Here I was thinking that such ideas went out of the window in the 50's. My girlfriend would kill me if I suggested to deal with all the finances and reward her with little gifts for her labour of love. When you're making RPG for females then it could be insightful to have actual females involved with the development process. Or are they are all at home cleaning the kitchen to get their hubby to buy them a new colour tv? I like to know what timecapsule this article came from....

It's just a matter of different cultures guys. This game will probably sell like hotcakes in Japan and tank in the west but that is not a strange thing. Many games are unheard of over here, yet sell millions of copies in the far east. If you ask me, this is a good thing because it means a wide (and sometimes downright weird) variety of games developed.

This is a baffling choice and makes me wonder if they even did their research on this one. For one, the Hostess clubs really only reside in Japan. We don't have such here (at least not in mainstream like over there). So why would they consider bringing a game geared towards "female gamers" about a subject that most females (and even males) are unaware of.

Ewww, no thanks. ould much prefer an RPG where the female lead, and I suppose there could be the male choice for those who only ever play as male, is some woman in her late twenties or early thirties who is aced with the task of some destined battle or whatever. Little too tired to think of a full on idea at this time, but whichever male developer thought that the ideas mentioned in this article for an RPG would make it appealing to female gamers clearly doesn't have a clue.

Swing and a miss! What happened to you Level-5? You mess up WKC series which had alot of promise and your last good game was on the PS2... A shame really.

Uh, this isn't what girl gamers want. Unless they're under the age of 12.

Wow, talk about missing the mark.. I dunno about Japan, but in the west? What kind of girl gamer would design something like this? I can only imagine that their "core female devs" are just there so that they can advertise it that way, while some clueless old men make this big pink fail of a game.

So...we have a game developed by women and targeted at women in which you basically control a stripper. And they'll like it because it's pink and involves buying clothes.

How about a "girls'" RPG about an intelligent, strong willed female adventurer who dresses sensibly, overcomes obstacles, learns lessons and ultimately becomes a better person for the experience? No, let's make an RPG about being a Hostess... PS - My favorite Hostess: the Twinkie

I've got a young little sister with cerebral palsy and ausberger's.Generally she functions about as well as normal children her age,but sometimes she needs something to relax and distract her.If this game is easy enough it may be good for her. Of course that means getting my 3DS out of my hands and into hers.....What a tough choice.....

I don't have a problem with this game personally as i love RPGs, but this is what happens when the developers let the market affect development decisions...although in fairness the cost to develop games has skyrocketed to the point where it's being taken out of their hands. I honestly had a bigger issue with WKC's online features then i do this...unless this will have some sort of MP as well. That will be the turn off. If i can play the Atelier games i can't see why this is such a big deal. Everyone deserves to have games developed for them. If this is what the majority of females would like then more power to them. It's time for some people to stop thinking they are the only people that games get developed for. The gaming world can and will continue to exist whether or not you are there.

So, this is a hostess simulator.. and yet they felt the need to change the name to distance it from the hostess profession. I guess they're working on the assumption that no one will ever actually see the content. Probably correct.

@Ragnarok-64 Of course! Boys grow up to be Phoenix Wright, Derek Stiles and Professor Layton. Girls grow up to be hostess club workers, cooking mama's and princess peach? Yeah, girls are being ripped off in the awesome character stakes. Want to make a "girl" friendly game? Then at least give her a decent profession, make a new Phoenix Wright game based around Mia's life as an attorney, now shes a powerful female role model.

A hostess simulator designed with the stereotypical pre-teen girly girl theme, where your true goal is to soullessly gather accessories... Well this will surely be embraced by women the world over! Hell, nevermind women, this should be played and treasured by ALL!
