Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude Updated Impressions

We check out the next Leisure Suit Larry game at Gen Con 2004.

Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude

We had a chance to take another look at Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude in a visit to VU Games' booth at the annual Gen Con event in Indianapolis. We were able to visit several different areas in the game and meet with a few of the game's 15 coeds. Leisure Suit Larry begins with college student Larry Laffer in his dorm room, which acts as a home base for the early part of the game. You begin by playing a minigame that increases Larry's "confidence," which essentially acts as Larry's health meter--the more minigames Larry loses, the more confidence he loses.

While you begin the game at the campus dorm, you'll be able to visit other on-campus locations, such as the library and the frat house (which you'll only be able to unlock after earning enough cash). Later on, you'll be able to leave campus to hit the town and nearby clubs. Throughout the game, Larry will be plagued by the crusty old dean who will attempt to spoil Larry's fun (some of the minigames will require you to flee from the dean and his henchmen). He'll also be able to wander freely through whichever areas he's unlocked and play whatever minigames he's unlocked. Meanwhile, he can interact with anyone he sees. Many of the characters in the world will have generic responses, while some will offer a variety of tips or jokes.

In order to unlock new areas, you'll need to complete various minigames that will earn Larry some extra scratch. He can also earn various tokens, such as secret tokens (which he can either win from minigames or find hidden in certain areas) to unlock new loading screens and additional content. Larry can also earn tokens of affection by completing the various dating minigames and activities with the various coeds he meets (you'll start the game with access to only three, though you'll later unlock new ones). You'll need to win the favor of at least 11 or so of them to complete the game, though you're welcome to go after all 15 if you wish. Your ultimate goal will be to star on the dating show that Larry watches religiously and to choose from the three young ladies who are the most difficult to obtain.

Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude is almost complete. The game is scheduled for release on the PS2, Xbox, and PC later this year.
