Leaked Emails Show Sony and Nintendo Discussing Mario Movie

Sony Pictures reportedly deep in negotiations with Nintendo to obtain animated film rights for Nintendo's iconic franchise.

The trove of emails recently unearthed and leaked to media from the massive Sony hack have revealed that Sony Pictures is working hard to secure the rights to make an animated Super Mario Bros. movie.

BuzzFeed obtained a series of emails that speak to Sony's deep negotiations with Nintendo over the rights. In an email dated October 23, 2014 with the subject line "Mario," producer Avi Arad (Spider-Man) explained to Sony Pictures executive Amy Pascal that, "I am the proud father of mario the animated film."

Arad also sent Pascal images of him standing next to Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, saying, "Happy ceo, lets get together, it's the mother load. [sic]"

At this point, it seemed as if Arad's negotiations with Nintendo for the Super Mario Bros. animated film rights had been finalized. Pascal sent the above email to Tom Rothman of Sony Pictures subsidiary TriStar Pictures, saying, "Avi closed Mario brothers. Animated."

Arad has since denied that Sony's deal with Nintendo for a Super Mario Bros. animated movie has actually gone through, telling BuzzFeed that his negotiations with the Japanese game giant are "just the beginning."

Still, it appears Sony has already spent some time thinking about how it could build out a Mario animated film series. Pascal mentions in a subsequent email that she thinks Genndy Tartakovsky, director of Hotel Transylvania and creator of Dexter's Laboratory, would be "perfect" for the job of bringing Mario to the big screen for Sony. However, a representative for Tartakovsky said he "is not involved."

Other emails from Sony Pictures executives say a deal with Nintendo could lead to a "Mario empire" for Sony, which may already have as many as four movie ideas in mind.

Sony and Nintendo are competitors in the console space. However, no emails were discovered that spoke to Sony Pictures feeling anxious or concerned about pursuing the Mario movie deal even though Sony Computer Entertainment (i.e. PlayStation) and Nintendo are rivals.

GameSpot has contacted Nintendo and Sony for comment.

The most recent Mario movie was 1993's Super Mario Bros., starring Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi. Hoskins, who died earlier this year, said the Mario movie was the worst project he'd ever been involved with.

The Mario movie, if indeed it's happening, would become one of many video game movies currently in development. Ubisoft has a total of six films in the pipeline, including movies based on Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell. Meanwhile, Sony is making a Last of Us movie, Konami is moving forward on a film based on Metal Gear Solid, Blizzard Entertainment has its Warcraft movie, and an Angry Birds film is scheduled for 2016. Capcom is also working on new Dead Rising and Resident Evil movies.

well it depends on what Nintendo have to say, back in 1993, I love that movie, watch almost everytime until a certain someone in my family got pissed off and broke it (I was a kid back then).

Sony makes Mario movie
More kids buy Nintendo for Mario
Kids grow up and buy new PlayStation!

Both consoles have some similar games so good business for both!

Avatar image for denverdood

Bioshock is dying for a good movie. I read about 2 years ago that they were planning one.

Instead Sony was to do a remake ...sad

Avatar image for hystavito

A series of Mario movies could get a bunch of new kids interested in Nintendo's IP, could be a nice boost for Nintendo games.

I would like to see more animated cgi movies of video games. With Directors that have a f**king clue of the game their basing the movie on.

Avatar image for Hurvl

Oh, I hope it's at least as good the one from 1993, but it'll probably be worse if other game movies are any indication.

Damn it Nintendo go to Pixar, they'll make a great Mario movie.

Avatar image for inkeyis

We don't know how it'll turn out, part of me wants a Japanese company like Sony to handle it, since Nintendo could then work closer and better with the company

Avatar image for soulless4now

<< LINK REMOVED >> Walt Disney Animated Studios has been a roll lately, so it might be better that they handle it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I gotta say I like that idea..

<< LINK REMOVED >> A partnership with Disney/Pixar would be awesome. I mean, look at Wreck-it Ralph.

Paper Mario Thousand Year Door and the portable RPG's had great stories and were genuinely funny; if the movie's story is anything like those, then it could be good...

An animated Zelda movie would've been much better because there is much more depth to the story of the Zelda series.

in other terms, Sony and Nintendo are merging.

Starring Danny DeVito as Mario.

No, Bob Hoskins ghost. It's animated, and if you really want Mario to sound like a fat bronxer, better hope for Joe Pesci.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I love Joe Pesci. Too bad he like stop doing stuff 10-15 years ago.

Good to see competitors working together for the greater good...

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

It'll be some CGI filled piece of crap.

Avatar image for Altazen

<< LINK REMOVED >> Did you even read? Or did you just somehow pretend the word animated is not there?

Come on, it's time to go!

I am OK with this.

I was actually hoping Nintendo would make a Mario movie themselves, especially after Miyamoto created those Pikmin shorts.

Avatar image for inkeyis

Miyamoto didn't create them, he worked with a third party Japanese company to make them. Working with Sony wouldn't be a bad thing, plus, Nintendo ip in movies with sony's portfolio of movies could really threaten Disney-pixar

Avatar image for Too-DementeD

<< LINK REMOVED >> In any case, those shorts were really well done, and Nintendo have ties with that CGI studio already.

Avatar image for inkeyis

Can they make good movies, heck yes, without a doubt. But can they fund/mass market/ widely distribute the film to the degree and experience of Sony? Probably not. It's one thing to make a film for a group of critics and 3ds/wii u users. It's another to make a movie for the world

Avatar image for kisaiyuki

<< LINK REMOVED >> And sink like Squaresoft did? No thanks. The best we can hope for is that Miyamoto signs off on the script.

Avatar image for Too-DementeD

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You're joking right? Do you know how many mistakes and risks Squaresoft made with making that FF movie? Well here's the first one for you: It cost them $137 million to create. In 2001.

To put that into perspective, It cost $125 million to create the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that came out a few months ago.

Avatar image for TheLazyClown

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Except TMNT is actually a good movie and is respectful to what TMNT is. FF: The Spirits Within is just a horribly made Sci-Fi film with "Final Fantasy" in the title.

Avatar image for Too-DementeD

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Okay? I didn't say anything about TMNT besides it's budget. My point was that the TMNT movie, which came out this year, cost less to make than a movie that came out 13 years ago.

Squaresoft messed up on a gigantic scale, and I doubt Nintendo would do the same.

Avatar image for kisaiyuki

<< LINK REMOVED >> Squaresoft tried to do an entirely realistic looking CG film at a time when computing power was 20 times weaker than it is now. Shrek cost 60 million. Which looked visually better? Not the one with the Ogre.

The point is, Nintendo has never done film itself, and it would be an expensive mistake, just like Squaresoft.

Nintendo likely regrets licensing Mario out after the DIC Super Mario World, and the Theatrical Super Mario Brothers movie, that we haven't seen anything made since. There hasn't even been a Super Mario anime made since the 80's.

Sony and Nintendo should just team up for the next Smash. Imagine Ratchet and Clank in Smash 5!? Or Mario drooling over Fat Princess lmao

Avatar image for coolmanmick

<< LINK REMOVED >> Or bring Sackboy and Yoshi wooly world together

Avatar image for nintendoboy16

<< LINK REMOVED >> Dr. Evil: How about NO!

Avatar image for Sefrix

You mean I wouldn't have to pay several hundred extra dollars on some hardware I don't want just to experience Mario again? Sold!

Avatar image for ArabrockermanX

<< LINK REMOVED >> FYI Mario isn't TLoU, a movie won't sum up the full experience.

Avatar image for da_chub

<< LINK REMOVED >> I completely agree. Why do I need to buy a several hundred dollar ps4 or x1 just to play more uncharted or Halo? Except I would rather keep playing my Wii U with new Mario and Zeldas to go with the Capt Toad and Bayonettas that Nintendo has to offer. Yea, more COD and assasins creed for the other systems, totally makes me want them.

Avatar image for PosiTVEMinD355

<< LINK REMOVED >> kind of sad to see a moderator that isn't more open-minded to support another console that at least has good games.

Avatar image for beerswagger

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> good for kids.sad for adults that pretend there real games.

Moderators got to have an opinions too. They are just gamers as we all are, and Moderators are just volunteers you know.

Avatar image for gamerx614

<< LINK REMOVED >> but sounding like a douchebag in the process?

That wasn't an opinion, they were just being an ass

Avatar image for Too-DementeD

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Doesn't really make sense.
"I don't want this console even though it has games on it that I want".

I understand if someone wouldn't want to PAY for the console if they have other consoles too, but to say you don't want the console yet want to play the games... especially when the games are first party. Umm...

Avatar image for DiamondDM13

Nooooo, how can you guys do this??? Now how will fanboys start more wars if they find out that their favourite companies don't actually hate each other and don't mind working together if it's for the mutual benefit? This will crush their ideology! This is terrible, we need to perverse fanboys ideas of the fierce war, or else they'll be confused and we'll lose the stupid comment to laugh over :(!
