League of Legends Has More Than 100 Million Monthly Players

League of Legends had 67 million people playing each month in 2014.

League of Legends is one of the most popular games of all time, and now we know exactly how popular it is. In an interview with Polygon, developer Riot Games revealed that the MOBA has surpassed 100 million monthly players.

The last time the developer released player numbers was 2014 when it had 67 million people playing League of Legends every month. The reason for not reporting player numbers on a more active basis is that co-founders Marc Merrill and Brandon Beck dislike talking figures such as this.

"It's hard to parse, but at the end of the day, those things don't even feel real," Beck said. "The coolest thing is actually when we're at the live events and get to meet fans face to face. Only then does it start to feel real. Otherwise, they're just numbers on a screen all over the world."

Beck also told Polygon that Riot is prototyping new games, and they might not use the League of Legends property.

"We're thinking about both options," he said. "Some experiences really need to be realized in different universes, and some experiences would be fucking awesome in the League universe. We're being flexible."

Thanks to its popularity, League of Legends was number one in the top five free-to-play games based on worldwide revenue for July 2016.

Riots first game was a clone of another game, they did some things right and got lucky with it and it became a big hit. That was around 7 years ago? No other games since than. I'm willing to bet there expertise isn't in "new" and "different" so I wouldn't really expect much from them with new games.

this proves one thing.
People love toxicity.

This game was by far the most toxic experience I have ever encountered and despite the inherent gameplay and heroes being fun, the toxicity was present in 99% of games to absurd levels. The report system does absolutely jack crap to reduce toxicity and in fact is a tool of toxicity in its own self. The game within the game is to trigger others and report them. The result being more toxicity and a system built to encourage people not to de-escalate issues, but to escalate them and create them.

Its a true cancer cesspool that has now spread to every other online communities which are all starting to magically be afflected by the same behaviors as found in LoL.

a true shame in the gaming industry but an even bigger shame for the human race.

Why you not tried to be friendly to others ? Maybe they would be friendly to you too, and so on....

All I head is blaming others...

@Kezzy123: It's not about online community, put that many kind people in real life together and you'l see how it'l work out, Countries can't share 1 earth so how 100 million player can share and not bite each other where everyone """knows better""" like in every god damn real life or virtual game.

@wexorian: Yeah I'm partly with you on that one, a huge part of the toxicity is that you are more likely to encounter douches the more people play. Let's say 1% are utter douches, 1% out of 100 million is a huge likelyhood you will encounter one. F ex Halo 5 has sold, what 5 million? Even if we assume 100% of the installbase plays multiplayer and 1% of those are douches you are much less likely to encounter them in that game.

And a douche in a game is more likely to trigger a douche response from others too. It's not the community per se or the game itself. It would be the same thing if Halo or any other online game had 100 million monthly gamers. The only thing that might trigger more hostility from LOL compared to Halo is that it is more reliant on your team beeing good in every match. Halo has other modes and one good player can carry the team more easily.

Best way to play league to get away from the toxicity is with friends, not random people in your team. That beeing said there is more to be done with the report system and consequences.

@wexorian: IRL people get representatives and talk it out. Cant do that in LoL, no mic, so people just flame on.

@X-RS: Yes consoles do not have keyboard to chat system so it's less toxic if there was one they would be toxic like lol or any MMO community towards criticsm. Imagine if riot disabled chat system you would not be able to say that it's toxic.
