League of Legends 2014 World Championship Prize Pool Is Over $2 Million

Team who wins first place will earn $1 million dollars.

Riot Games has revealed the prize pool for its League of Legends World Championship event that will be taking place in October this year. Revealed in the 2014 World Championship rulebook that was recently made available, the prize pool exceeds $2 million dollars in total.

The team who grabs first place at the grand finals will be awarded $1 million dollars, with second place to be rewarded with $250,000 and third and fourth place earning $150,000. Teams in fifth to eight place will each earn $75,000.

The prize money on offer may seem staggering to some, but is in line with statistics that indicate League of Legends was the most watched game on Twitch in May. More coverage on the competitive League of Legends scene in the lead-up to the World Championship can be found at GameSpot's sister site, onGamers.

People saying DOTA 2 is better than LOL because of prize winnings. Ok credit where credit is dues, they they have revolutionised eSports buy making an in-game purchase for the community, that contriubtes towards the prize pool, but don't you think LOL and every other game has taken note? Dota 2 is a few years old now and still can not compete with the 27 million daily people that log in to LOL. Hell steam struggles to get even 7 million online across all games.

Now I am not a player of neither games but people seems to forget that Riot games actually gives any participant of the NA LCS, EU LCS, GPL, LPL, OGN and other a salary. They actually get paid to play video games. Even if you lose all season you get money every week. Now if they get paid let's say 30k a year per player (which is a little under the median according to wikipedia), that means that for the NA and EU LCS (who have 8 team each with 5 players per team (8*2*5 = 80 players total) Riot gives up 2.4 million $ in salary. Now I think that the Koran OGN have 12 teams, so for Korean it would be around 1.8 million $. And if we assume that the other 3 have 8 teams each, that makes for another 3.6 million. Put all together, it cost Riot games around 7.8 million $ in salary for their players. Added to that is the 2 million of the World championship. All in all, It also makes for around 10 million $ in money that Riot gave its players during their 2014 season. And they didn’t need people to chime in like Valve did (Valve asked people to donate to play Dota 2 at the competitive level, if you are not in the top 8 (again no increase the prize pool which made go to 10 million $).

So If you idea of how many teams actually wins money at the International but I assume it is pretty much like League’s world championship) team of the world you don’t gain jack shit. If you play league at that level, you are sure to get a salary.

I think both system works pretty well the difference is that salary is a more sneaky prize pool where have a 10 million $ for a prize pool for a single Dota 2 event is pretty impressive.

This is a sign of the times that Dota2 is taking pole position in the MOBA race.

I loved going to my local Valve listed Pubstomp and chasing back a few beers watching the Dota2 finals with fellow fans. Felt like the first time that Esports could actually be considered a sport to me.

<< LINK REMOVED >> All this shows is that DOTA 2 have revolutionised eSports. They deserve credit for the idea of an in-game purchase that contributes to the prize pool. I'm sure LOL , Smite, COD & every other game have taken note. We will see a sign of Dota 2 taking pole position when it can even scratch the 27 million users logging into LOL on a daily basis. Hell steam struggles to get 7 million online across all games at any one time. How old is Dota 2 now?

I get Dota 2 had a bigger prize pool, but that game is god awful. It's a clusterfuck of over the top particle effects, incohesive gameplay and barbie dressup like accessories. Only reason why it gets praise is probably cause it's made by Valve. If any other dev made it, it wouldn't get any recognition because it simply doesn't deserve any.

<< LINK REMOVED >> why don't you learn how to dota then talk, if you suck dick in dota how does that make league better? I can understand if you're good at both games and not like the other. But since I assume you suck big dota dick, you'll dislike it just because.

I play both games, and just because I prefer dota it don't make league a bad game.

and guess wat? About 20% maybe even more league players are dota veterans, so stfu. I know ppl, lots of dota veterans who went to league.

Check the graphics options that are an "eyesore" to you off. Or is that beyond LoL players comprehension?

Plus it would have a following no matter who developed it as DOTA was the original MOBA on which LoL was partly based.

<< LINK REMOVED >> With DOTA2, 8,5 million came from the community itself by buying the in game Compendium items, supporting the tournament and creating the bigger prize pool. The initial prize pool set up by Valve was 1,6 million.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The worst teams in the international only got enough money to pay what they spent going to seattle in the first place. In LoL's case, all the pro players have a salary payed out by Riot, even if you don't qualify for the world championship. They don't need to make the prize bigger.

All pro players are paid monthly salary by Riot games.

While In Dota 2 Valve do not pay players anything. Players automatically comes to them.

Riot --> Pay pro players to play their game

Valve --> Does not pay players to play their game

@jfontalba @bdous You never heard of sponsors? And why should Valve pay the players anyway? No tournaments events organisations in Dota 2 pay the players to play. All Dota 2 players are paid by their own private sponsors. If Riot pays LoL players to play. Then it means LoL arent as popular as Dota 2.

Riot: Arrange tournaments and pays the players to play their tournament.

Valve: Arrange tournaments only

Riot pays money so other people play their game to keep LoL alive in E-sport. That just sucks.

Valve do not even pay the players. The players automatically comes to them.

And Dota 2 players are paid monthly salary by their private sponsors. Even if they do not win tournaments.

@jfontalba @manutdarsenal Dota 2 has something called sponsors. The teams are paid by their sponsors. The teams can still lose every tournament and still get paid by their sponsors monthly.
