Lead PS4 Architect Mark Cerny Is Making a New Game, Thinking About Knack 2

Cerny is working with a small team on an unannounced game.

Mark Cerny is well known for his work on Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet & Clank, and Spyro, but his most recent efforts helped give rise to the PlayStation 4 and the platformer Knack. Now, Cerny is moving onto new projects, and he's focusing on games.

In an interview with IGN at the Develop Conference going on this week, Mark Cerny revealed that he's turning back to game development to take a break from working on hardware and technology. In fact, he's starting to make a game right now with a much smaller focus than Knack. "One of the projects I'm trying to kick off is a so-called 'indie title'," he explained. "It won't really be an indie title because it'll be fully funded, but it'll be nice to have a project where the scope is small enough that I'll know the names of everybody on the team, which is really hard to do these days now that you've got 100, 200, 300 people internal plus everyone outside the company."

He's moving to smaller projects because of the creative freedom that comes with a reduced scope. "With the big titles you have to think very carefully about what you're trying to accomplish and how that will integrate with the existing market," he said, "but so much about the smaller titles is excitement and freshness."

But Cerny is certainly not abandoning his last project, the PS4 launch title Knack. Although the game wasn't critically acclaimed, Cerny believes that there is still a lot of room to work in the Knack world. When asked if there would ever be a sequel, he responded, "I would love to keep working with the [Knack] brand, definitely. There's a lot unexplored there, I think anybody who played the game would tell you that."

Keep an eye on GameSpot for more news about Cerny's new project. What would you like to see next from Cerny, one of the people behind Resistance, Jak & Daxter, and Ratchet & Clank? Let us know in the comments.

I don't think Knack could ever be more than an ok game. No point in wasting everyones time with a sequel and create something new.

I own Knack but that was only because it was the only bundle I could get due to stock, It is not as horrible as people make it out to be but I am not buying a sequel just buy Crash back from Activision. Sony are you serious you could include CTR as the Multiplayer and continue from where 3 left off plus maybe some Crash bash type Multiplayer It would be HUGE, screw Knack it won't be a success this time around trust me.

Knack was a flop. Nobody liked it. It was barely better than an Indie game. If you make another one you're just hoping.

Why make Knack 2? Nobody liked it. It was pretty much the PS4's Kameo Elements of Power.

I didn't mind Knack and I'd love to see how they could improve on the core game in a sequel, maybe add a little more platforming, add more combos and such to beef up the combat, and make areas a little more open to exploration. All in all I think it's buy a Knack 2 just for fun

Highlight of Knack 2 will be that he is made up of twice as many pieces as in the first Knack, only made possible with the power of ps4.

Yea, I rented Knack from Gamefly at launch and even though I saw no need to own it, I found the game's nuanced combat, cool boss fights, and colorful creativity to be much better than the average review led you to believe. Knack was fun to playthrough once.

Why stop there? Revisit Sony Battle Royal and Beyond Two Souls! That way we can have a trifecta of Sony crap!

<< LINK REMOVED >> Battle "royale" (Dumb child) and yes that is a great Idea the game was very popular online it just lacked the Character roster we all wished for you know unlike Microsoft sony actually own enough Franchises to do something like this.

Imagine Xbox Fighting game not only do you lack a decent D Pad to have a smooth fighting game but also all it would be is Master chief vs Marcus Phoenix over and over because you know they are basically the only game you have that aren't third party payoffs.

Xbox already has a premire fighter - it's called Killer Instinct.

And lol @ the D pad comment. The One controller is considered the best controller ever made.

We made a very crappy game that not many people bought. What do we do? Instead of working on a new game from a great franchise that everyone loves, let's make a sequel to the cramps game.

Avatar image for rasterror

@Martyr77 @robbiejones @strothers101 I've played both extensively I can say without bias and without a doubt that Ryse was better. Even though the combat was repetitive it had a great story, great voice acting and is honestly still the best looking game out period. But I know you're gonna call me an Xbox fanboy for saying this so whatever. I'll go back to playing the Dead Island Epidemic beta on my computer.

<< LINK REMOVED >> no i disagree, ryse looked great but thats about it, knack had better gameplay and more substance, ryse was like playing a 60 dollar tech demo...knack>ryse

Avatar image for rasterror
rasterror

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> But at least Ryse was something. What was Knack? a game where you did the same thing over and over and over again. You play a little then cut scene, a little more and another cut scene. Then you get the cut scenes where he does cool things that you can't do ion the game. Knack was a cheap way for Sony to make a quick buck.

Knack has serious potential, despite what the haters may say, its a mechanically sound game with great controls, it just needed more layers/variety, and 'spicer' level design. It really wouldn't have taken much to lift Knack from an average game to a great one, it just needed a little more love.

It was a good game. I have a ten yr old and on both console releases it was nice to have a couch coop that you don't shoot someone in the face.

That being said it was missing that endearing part where you really cared about the characters. None of them were exactly love able. Knack had that deep voice and made feel like god of war was talking:p.

knack is actually a pretty fun game, a generic beat em up by today's standard but those who love old school stuff will love it, probably.

I was excited for Knack before it came out. It had been four years since the last good 3D platformer on PlayStation and I was excited for a new one.

Imagine my disappointment when I found out that was an outright lie and it's just an abominably shitty beat 'em up. Sigh.

It was a good starter game KNACK, the only people who moan about it, are the one's who want hardcore games, and yet no matter how many times Cerny came out and said this game is for casuals coming from the mobile gaming community, they still slag off KNACK, lets get one thing out the way not every game need's to be a AAA Title :S where was you when the PS2 was turning out games left right and center from low quality to high. it was a good game, wasn't great but some a young child or a novice adult it was a good game, hopefully if they do a sequel they make the game a little more interesting story wise and make the puzzles and platforming parts a bit more harder.

Avatar image for Swinny14

<< LINK REMOVED >> Knack is hardcore on hard mode and above, it has an old school difficulty level which perfectly fits with the design of the game. This was the intention, to be old-school.

This is also the games biggest failing though, since it was far too simple to rise above mediocrity. That said, I think its a good game, and as a franchise, it has mega potential.

IMO, it wouldn't have taken much to rise the original from an average game to a great one, it just needed more love. With a sequel, they could add those much-needed layers to the gameplay, and then you have a great game because there was nothing technically wrong with the original, which had amazing controls and fun-but overly repetitive gameplay.

Try out the challenge mode if you want to know the meaning of the word ''Hardcore'', MAN this is so challenging.

@gajbutler LOL You obviously have no idea. If you were to scroll down a list of games developed by this man, you'd see that up until Knack, he made nothing but masterpieces for 20-30 years straight.

He was so busy with the PS4 that Knack didn't get enough love I guess.
