Layoffs at one Aliens: Colonial Marines dev

TimeGate Studios confirms layoffs, says all projects in development continue to move forward.

TimeGate Studios, the developer that helped create Aliens: Colonial Marines, today enacted a round of layoffs, company president Adel Chaveleh told Polygon.

No Caption Provided

"Today, we had to make the difficult decision to let go of some great game developers. This is never easy, and we're doing all we can to assist those developers affected," Chaveleh said. "TimeGate is preparing, as is the entire industry, for the transition to next-generation consoles and new business models. As part of this reinvention, all projects and strategic initiatives continue to move forward at the studio."

No specific number of layoffs was provided, though sources told Polygon that about 25 staffers were impacted. These sources also indicated that the cuts were a result of a publishing deal going belly up.

TimeGate Studios most recently assisted Gearbox Software with development on the critically blasted Aliens: Colonial Marines.

The game's mostly negative review scores were partially blamed on the nature of the title's shared development (Nerve Software also contributed to the project), as well as Gearbox's reported mismanagement of production.

I kinda feel bad for TimeGate. They shouldn't have been involved with A:CM's development in the first place. They didn't have the backing nor the know-how, but Gearbox dumped A:CM in their lap so work on Borderlands 1 AND 2 could be completed - even though Gearbox had a prior contract with Sega for Aliens. Gearbox really should be the ones to pay for this atrocity.

After all the bullsh*t Randy and the rest of Gearbox fed us for a period of SIX YEARS, we ended up with a game that was a complete disaster in practically every respect.

@datbush That "lying turd" produced a great game in Borderlands 2 without storing DLC on the disc and expecting us to pay for it (despite all the problems it caused). And where was Sega in all this? Why weren't they getting on Gearbox's case to get it done?

Sega has a history of messing stuff up. I'll believe that long before I point fingers at Gearbox.

@mechag2 I don't know, supposedly they did a pretty good job, but Gearbox scrapped their work.

I still can't wrap my head around how Hick's survived Alien 3, and how he could possibly formulate a plan WHEN HE WAS UNCONSCIOUS AT THE END OF ALIENS!

I don't blame Timegate nearly as much as i blame Gearbox for the turd that is colonial marines.

It was Gearbox decision to abandon the game, in favor of their own ip, and hand it off on the eleventh hour to developers Timegate. Then Gearbox went on to tie them up with bureaucratic red tape preventing any chance of Timegate releasing a half decent game. Once Gearbox finally saw it fit to take development duties back they decided to cover their turd of a game with promotional material in order to get as many suckers to purchase the game as possible.

I use to have massive respect for Gearbox thanks to their Borderlands franchise, but now i wouldn't shed a single tear of they went the way of THQ.

@Slim_Lyrics I doubt Gearbox forced it on them. Timegate took on the job and they didn't deliver. I'm not saying Gearbox doesn't have a part of the blame, but Timegate should have been aware of what they were getting themselves into.

The game is done, no DLC is likely to happen, so there are lay offs. They will hire up again when they need people again, just like so many other development studios. How is this news??

That publishing deal dying might be news but we don't know diddly about it - or even if it happened at all.

Gearbox **** up and TimeGate have to pay because they couldn't get their shit together, great, atleast TimeGate had the balls not to make a generic shooter with their other games, but i doubt we'll see another Section 8 game anytime soon.

This is obviously what happens when you have too many developers working on one game with a lack of communication. I'm not surprised it failed. People kept asking me if I was going to pre-order it and I had said "No" more times then I want to count. Gearbox is usually a solid developer, but I have a good feeling that they were not focusing much on this game and was relying on the other developers to get the game done. They've made some decent games in the past and a few bad ones as well.

I'm not really putting the blame on these guys, it's Gearbox that made a mess of things through horrible mismanagement and having way to many cooks in the kitchen.

It's hard to make a video game when you're given second-hand money that was embezzled from Sega. I still like the game, but Gearbox ruined it and nobody else.

"Today, we had to make the difficult decision to let go of some great game developers" I'm assuming 'great' is a relative term. Perhaps they're considered 'great' compared to people like the War Z devs.

They only had jobs until the product shipped. Timegate Studios isn't getting projects these days handed to them. That is how the industry works.

Well when you make a bad game sometimes that can lead to bad things. That said from the sounds of it the managing of this game was just as bad as anything the developers did.

@guard2182 Nobody should ever have to think that they're gonna get canned once a game is out the door. Sadly, laying off people after a game's development is done is all too common.

@King9999 Games are the same as any industry though so why shouldn't someone have to think that if they are part of a failed product that they may get fired? I mean I work in a shop selling mobile phones and I know that if the company isn't doing well or if I am not doing well then I may be fired for it, the games industry isn't and should never be any different.

@King9999 @3199eddie I see what you mean, but whenever a new game is being made the company making it swells its staff numbers, then when complete it shrinks them again. I would imagine most if not all lower level staff expect to be laid off at the end of a project due to this cycle. Again it is the same cycle present in any situation when a project is being done regardless of the industry. You also have to take into account the finances of the company itself; i.e. can it afford to keep a staff of say 150 people when not currently working on a project funded for that many?

I do agree that it isn't a nice situation to be in and sympathise with those affected, but it isn't fair to say it shouldn't happen in the gaming industry just because they make games as it is present in every industry and is generally accepted as what to expect by staff.

@3199eddie @King9999 It doesn't even have to be a failed project, though. Even if a game is successful, you can still get laid off. That's the point I was trying to make.
