A Total War Story: Troy will be an Epic Games Store exclusive, but you have the chance to grab it for free.

While it's not a core release in the series, developer Creative Assembly is trying some new ideas with A Total War Saga: Troy. And that includes how the game will be sold, which involves giving it away for free on release date.

The upcoming PC real-time strategy game is launching on August 13, and will be sold exclusively on the Epic Games Store for a year before coming to other digital storefronts. What makes this deal more curious though is the offer at launch. For 24 hours after its release, A Total War Saga: Troy will be free to redeem, giving you no excuse to not give the series a try if you haven't already.

Creative Assembly explained that this model is only applicable to their Troy spin-off however, as is the exclusivity deal with Epic Games. The studio expects to bring future titles to a variety of platforms at launch, which it hopes will also include the Epic Games Store.

Creative Assembly also explained that its approach to modding will stay the same, despite not having access to Steam's Workshop. Modding tools should arrive for Troy a month after release, with the studio explaining that they're working with Epic Games to ensure support for it through their client. Barring that, players will be able to use a mod manager to edit files outside of the launcher the game is paired with.

A Total War Saga: Troy will let you play as a number of hero characters who played big roles in the historical conflict, including Achilles, Hector, Paris, and more. The game will also introduce more mythological creatures for you to both use and fight against in the large scale, strategic battles the series is known for.
