Last Day To Claim GTA 5 For Free On The Epic Games Store

The Epic Games Store kicked off its annual Mega Sale by offering Grand Theft Auto 5 for free this week.

Epic Games Store's next free game is a big one: Epic has confirmed Grand Theft Auto V - Premium Edition is the next free game available to claim and keep. GTA V is free now until Thursday, May 21, at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET, when it'll be replaced by next week's free mystery game. This comes after a deleted tweet earlier this week leaked the offer early. Please note you'll need to turn on two-factor authentication to claim the game.

When attempting to download a free game, some Epic Games Store users are encountering an error message that says, "Your account is unable to download any more free games at this time." Epic has addressed the issue in a tweet and asks people to wait 24 hours before trying again to download the free game, which should fix the issue.

The reveal of GTA 5 as this week's free game brought so much traffic to the site that the Epic Games Store and its launcher were down for most of the day on May 14. However, everything seems to be working smoothly once again.

The Premium edition of GTA V includes the full story experience, free access to Grand Theft Auto Online, and all existing gameplay upgrades and content. You'll also get the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack and $1,000,000 in-game bonus cash to spend in GTA Online.

To claim any Epic free games, all you need is a free Epic Games Store account to add the game to. Once you add the game to your cart and "purchase" it for zero dollars, it'll be in your library forever, ready to download at your leisure.

Grand Theft Auto V is only the latest in a long list of free games Epic has given out since the program started in December 2018, with previous giveaways included other acclaimed titles like What Remains of Edith Finch, The Witness, Batman: Arkham Collection, Celeste, and more. You can check out our updated list of all of Epic's past free games for a quick look at what's been free in the past.

Grand Theft Auto V earned a "superb" 9/10 in GameSpot's GTA V review, which has been updated for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions. Critic Mark Walton praised its stunning visuals, excellent first-person mode, and fantastic writing and voice acting.

"The fact that I'm even thinking about this at all in a video game that's as popular and as, well, mainstream as GTA V is a testament to its quality," he wrote. "Over a year later, GTA V remains one of the most consistently entertaining video games I've ever played. Even without the spectacular new visuals, first-person mode, the epic new rail gun, the new murder mystery missions for Michael, the new, even furrier animals, remote play support on PS4, a mountain of new songs on the radio (including my personal favourite, I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys on the pop station), and the return of vehicles like the classic Dodo seaplane, GTA V would be still be worth playing."

The store also just launched its annual Mega Sale to coincide with this week's freebie. The sale includes discounts on some of Epic's biggest games, like Control, Borderlands 3, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Epic has also brought back its coupon offer for the sale--if you buy a game or add-on that's $15 or more, you'll get a $10 Epic coupon, and every time you make a purchase during the sale, you'll get another coupon.

I was one of the suckers who pre-ordered GTA V back in 2013 and got it on launch day in September (the Beta version.... of course, I didn't know it was the Beta version back then). Loved single player mode... mulitplayer was kind of crappy, but playable. But then I was lucky enough to have killed a bounty with 2 Billion (yes Billion) dollars on his head (a hack some people were doing, i guess). With that money, multiplayer became infinitely more enjoyable. Then in February 2014, Rockstar fixed the glitch and I only had around 1 million dollars. I stopped playing a few days later (and haven't played it since) because the game was so boring. Morale of the story? Microtransactions ruin video games. If microtransaction did not exists, there would be no need to deprive gamers from in-game content that is pay-to-win (believe me, I was winning a lot of deathmatches online when I had that 2 Billion Dollars because I was able to call in for support as often and whenever I wanted) , and also deprive gamers from in-game content that is more fun. The other really crappy thing Rockstar did was nerf farming for money (so they could sell more shark cards). I remember doing a mission that earned the most money the fastest. It wasn't anywhere near "fast" though. It still took several hours to grind out to get any decent amount of money. So what does Rockstar do?? They nerf it, so instead of grinding for like 10 hours to afford 1 vehicle (which was a long time in it's own right).... you would have to grind 50 hours for it now. Those numbers are just arbitrary, but that's what it was like. EA, Rockstar and Square Enix are on my no-respect, no-support, no-buy list.

On a side note: I always hate microtransaction, always. They are always a bad thing. With that said, I obviously can understand them being in a Free-to-Play game (NEVER in a game that you pay for up front though (like GTA V). But even in the free-to-play games, they are rarely done right. Path of Exile probably does microtransactions the best when it comes to not making the microtransactions pay-to-win..... BUT they probably do the worst in pricing them. In order to get a 100% aesthetic costume (no special abilities come with it, 100% just for looks) they would cost anywhere from $30-OVER $100 dollars.... $100 for ONE armor set (just for looks).

Think I know why GTA V was pulled off GamePass so quickly after only a couple months. (and it has nothing to do with RDR2)

Not only do I have to use the shitty Epic Games launcher to get this game but then I have to sign up for a Rockstar Social Club account before I can play it, except the Social Club is broken and never sends the email to verify your account, so I can't play my "free" game.

A big **** you goes out to Epic and Rockstar. And publishers wonder why people pirate games.

@dzimm: This! I waited forever for the game to download, then launched it in Epic just to be told no, you now have to download the rockstar launcher, then sign up for a social club account, then connect that account to the epic account, then launch the game in the rockstar launcher just to have it then open the epic launcher. So you need 2 launchers, 2 interconnected accounts, and a constant internet connection, just to play one game. Ridiculous.

@santinegrete: Yep. It's used as DRM since you can't play the game until the files on your hard drive have been "verified" by the launcher. I finally got the verification email after several hours, and I must admit, GTA V is a very well made game, but the hoops I had to jump through just to play it have soured the experience somewhat. Ironically, one of the early missions in the game lampoons social networking and openly calls it out as nothing more than a system for collecting users' personal information.

Grand Theft Auto V... that name rings a bell.

I think I heard that somewhere before, I wonder if it's any good!
They must be giving it away cause this game can't sell copies...

xD
