Now Playing: Free PS4 PlayStation Plus Games For April 2019 Revealed

[Update 5/1]: May's PS Plus free PS4 games have been announced! Overcooked and What Remains of Edith Finch are next up. Because May started on a Wednesday, we won't get those new games until Tuesday, May 7, so you have some extra time to grab April's games detailed below.

We're now well into April, so the remaining time you have left to download the free games available for PS Plus members is rapidly shrinking. If you want some more PS4 games to add to your collection, now is the time. Unfortunately, with PS3 and Vita games no longer part of the monthly package, there are only two games available to download this month--and neither of them can compare to March's fantastic offerings. April's PS Plus games are The Surge and Conan Exiles, and they're available to download right now.

The Surge is a science-fiction RPG heavily inspired by the Dark Souls series and takes place in a grim, dystopian future where the world has been ravaged by war and environmental diseases. Robots and clones make up a majority of the workforce, so the humans who are left must fight to survive while wearing exoskeleton implants intended to boost speed and strength. Critic Daniel Starkey gave the game a 7/10 in GameSpot's The Surge review.

"Not everything hits, but The Surge works far more often than it doesn't, and what it does change is mostly better executed here than in its forebears," Starkey wrote. "Deck 13 has crafted a satisfying adventure that breathes new life into a flooded sub-genre."

Then there's Conan Exiles, an open-world survival adventure set in the universe of Conan the Barbarian. You play a customizable character who has been rescued by Conan and must now explore the harsh world known as The Exiled Lands. Resource gathering, item crafting, and shelter building all play a role in your quest for survival. However, the game received a 3/10 in GameSpot's Conan Exiles review--critic James Swinbanks took issue with the game's multiple bugs, confusing AI, and unexciting combat.

"Ultimately, Conan Exiles is one of the most unsatisfying games I’ve ever played," he wrote. "Its crafting and resource systems may be dense enough that the ultra-patient could find something to enjoy here, but anyone else would likely walk away with their hands thrown up in defeat."

That said, both of these games are totally free, so if they sound interesting to you, be sure to download and try them out before they're replaced by new games on May 7.

In defense of Conan Exiles, it's a much better game today than it was last May, when you guys reviewed it. It's been a slow road, but Funcom has stayed in it for the long haul and it's a pretty solid game these days. Especially if you're comparing it to other survival games, a genre where 4 out 5 titles never leave their beta state, no matter how many years it's been since they declared themselves ready for prime time and left early access.

I have not played The Surge but I have been playing Conan exiles since launch and it's not bad , imagine a survival game but with alot of PVE not just a griefing simulator like alot of other games, has a good crafting system and a way way better combat mechanic than Ark

I really hope this is something Sony addresses in the very near future. Either they need to hurry up and get the PS5 on shelves so they can start offering PS5 games, or they need to start giving away an additional PS4 game or two. Or they need to steal Microsoft's Game Pass system and, instead of asking for another chunk of cash for that service, just roll it into PS+ and, instead of the current 'free games with Plus' model, consumers just get access to an always changing, always growing library of games. I don't know. But they need to do something.

@thedarklinglord: Im so confused by your post -- there are still new PS4 games coming out every week, so why would they need to get ps5 games? Just so you can get more games each month? PS+ is always on sale for $40-$45 bucks (right now in fact!) so I dont know why you are so entitled to more games? Its still like $2 a game... Were you even plaything those PS3 games? i know I wasn't! -- My hope is the few bucks they save from Vita/PS3 titles they had to pay for each month should go toward newer PS4 titles, but I wont hold my breath for that, (no corporation ever said "now that we have more money each month we can make this other thing better").

They had Play station Now before Xbox had Game Pass, so I'm not sure what you think they should "steal"? Go get PS now, or you know, drop PS+ and buy your own games!?
And Game Pass does not come with Xbox Gold, its a separate cost. So why does Sony need to give it to you free?

Avatar image for thedarklinglord

@squidracerX: Well, first off, I don't think I'm entitled to more games. But I believe I should get value for my money, and, for me, access to on online play and two games a month isn't much of a value, especially when those games aren't of interest to me. Which is why I let my subscription to PS+ lapse at the end of last year. While I'd love to see the service offer more, I'm really not demanding it. I'm not outraged by them dropping PS3 and Vita games - even though, yes, I was still playing some of those games, on those rare occasions when they offered something I was curious about but had never bought - but I am disappointed that Sony didn't make any effort to fill that gap. But I understand that I'm in the minority there.

Yes, Sony had PS Now before Microsoft had Game Pass. By 'steal' I meant that Sony should take a page from Microsoft's book and consider launching some of their first party stuff on PS Now, or at least getting newer releases on the service sooner. Of course, if they did that, then offering free games with PS+ would be pointless, since there would likely be a better selection and better value to PS Now, resulting in PS+ being purely a pay-to-play-online service, which might be harder to sell at the current price. Which is why I suggested they might conceivably merge the two services, rolling the streaming catalog of PS Now into the online play of Plus - though, that would likely result in Sony increasing the price of PS+, which might not sit well with a large percentage of their users, even if that increased price was less than what the two services would cost together at this time. And, for all I know, it's entirely possible that Sony has already considered this, crunched the numbers and weighed the pros and cons, and they decided that how things are now is the best way to satisfy the largest percentage of their community while maximizing their profits.

You make a good point, though, even if you were being a bit obnoxious and argumentative about it. For someone like me, who doesn't much care about online multiplayer and might still have an interest in playing some older games, PS Now likely would be a better value than PS+ since I'd get access to both older and (somewhat) newer games. I'll need to look into what games are currently available on the service. Thank you for the suggestion.

Remember on the PS3, last gen, when PS+ used to give out new, or good, games every month? What happened to that? I remember getting the monthly 360 games and they always sucked compared to the PS3's offerings. Though 360 games where, and still are, yours to own even if you cancel your subscription. Not so with XB1 and PS4/3.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@Vodoo: Remember when PS+ wasn't mandatory for online play so Sony had to provide an incentive to get people to pay for it? Times have changed. But at least it seems that now we get at least one game per month that isn't another generic indie title. Big improvement to just a few months ago when most months there were nothing but indie titles.

Avatar image for squidracerX
squidracerX

@Atzenkiller: Indie titles are great. I've played many indie titles that #1 need the exposure, and #2 were better than many AAA titles. Its why people freaking drool over the Switch now, "it is the place to play indie games!", so why are ps4 fans so snobbish about them? Its like so many people that play video games dont actually like video games...

And as I dont think Ive ever payed more than $40 a year for the service - paying like $1+ for the games I/we have nothing to complain about (except I buy a lot of games myself, so literally most months i own 1 or both of the games anyway).

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@squidracerX: Whatever floats your boat. I don't enjoy wasting my time on garbage and there are way too many good games nowadays to even consider wasting my time on any indie crap. I'd have to be really desperate and have way too much time, enough time to finish all the decent games and then have nothing else left to play. But like I said that's simply not the case.

Avatar image for squidracerX
squidracerX

@Atzenkiller: Personal taste is personal taste -- I dont like Smash or Madden even though they are popular -- but these "indie" games cover such a breadth of genres there has to be something you'd enjoy -- although you seem to have some bias with dismissive comments like "waste my time on garbage" and "indie crap" generalizing literally 1000's of games. Its sad to hear. Especially when some of the best talent from major studios is actually making this stuff.

As someone who has played lots of these games; (and enjoys them), there are some bad ones sure, but there are some real gems that can contend with any AAA game for "game of the year".
Where as i can point to dozens of "AAA" games that came out recently that literally were "time wasting garbage", (and $60!), from Left Alive to Anthem. -- I think all of the games on my list below are better than Conan...
The ironic part is you say you dont have "time" to play these games. But for one game like Red Dead 2, (which was pretty divisive), you could have played 4 or 5 of these smaller games in its place.
So I have a few to suggest you might like:

'Nidhogg' is one of the best 2 player experiences Ive ever had, just laughing the whole time while playing, and the 'Jackbox' party games are the best local multiplayer party games out there.
'Into the Breach' was on a ton of professional game reviewers top 10 list last year for a reason, it was freaking great!!!
'Dead Cells' took home many game of the year nominations last year as well, and it reviewed better than AAA games released along side it. Literally no major studio could have done it better.
'Baba is You' and 'Hypnospace Outlaw' are the two most clever games Ive played this year - and no mainstream game has come close to what they offer.
'Night in the Woods' was my game of the year 2 years ago, (its literally the best story-line Ive ever experienced in a game).
'Bastion' or 'Oceanhorn' are great if you want an old fashioned Zelda style game.
'Walking Dead' was an indie game that reinvigorated the adventure game genre, and has had great spinoffs from their studio with games like 'Life is Strange'.
'PUBG' only inspired Fornite one of the biggest games of all time (and was better than Fortnite).
'Minecraft' was a freaking indie game!
Puzzle games like 'Talos Principal' and 'Fez' will bend your brain.
'Cuphead' was literally the best Xbox exclusive in 2017.
'Hellblade' can compete with any AAA games especially in the art department.
'Stardew Valley' is factually better than the mainstream Harvest Moon games now.
And games I enjoyed that were worth it for the art style alone were 'Gris', 'Darkest Dungeon', and 'Return of the Obra Dinn'.
'Rebel Galaxy' was such a fun space pirate sim, im so excited about the sequel!
The list can go on! -- But for instance, if you play VR -- those are mostly all indie games... They arent all bad :)

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@squidracerX: Why play some low quality garbage if you can play something with a bigger budget and more depth. I've actually bought Stardew Valley, never played it for more than an hour though. That game's not even what I think of when I talk about indie titles, cause for the kind of game it is it's on a much higher quality level than pretty much anything else out there. I've also played Rebel Galaxy when it was free and it was kinda nice. It was also extremely simplistic. I prefer games with death and games of high quality. If you don't have high standards then sure, enjoy those garbage indie titles. But I'm not just looking for some distractions. If I spend my time on some game then it should be worth it. And like I said, there's already way too many really good games out there. Why the hell would I waste my time on low quality indie garbage that mostly just copies other games anyway? Only that they can't produce anything decent for lack of a budget.

You don't need hundreds of millions of Dollars to produce a decent game. But you do need some budget and a few people working for you to do so. This isn't the 90s where it was possible for one man to create a great game. Nowadays that's only possible with games like Stardew Valley, because they try to recreate games from that time.

@Vodoo: Actually it's only the X1 games that are locked if your sub expires. The two monthly, backwards compatible games are yours to keep regardles. That's 24 games per year to keep compared to the ever decreasing PS+ effort.

And yes I do own both consoles, both with subs. GWG is by far the better value.

@King_Pazuzu: I know it is considered to be one of the best CoD games. But, although I sometimes play FPS games, I never liked CoD / Battlefield / that kind of "realistic war games".

I did play the whole campaign to see for myself how it is and I did not like it much. It's not bad, but also not good. To me it felt mediocre. I also tried the PvP mode and I did not like it at all.

@genuineXeal: So it's not for you. Why did you have to write 2 paragraphs just to point that out. The first MW was the best out of the series, after that they added so much crap to the games, desperately trying to innovate with each new game, or whatever their intention was. But that game is a classic and what all sequels should have aimed for.
