Konami N-Gage-ing Metal Gear Solid

Publisher signs on to Nokia's reimagined mobile gaming platform; Solid Snake's tactical stealth game leads offerings in June.

Nokia's N-Gage as a mobile platform has had a rough history, thanks in no small part to the device's original layout, which required users to hold the device sideways in order to make phone calls. With the launch of the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable in 2004, the N-Gage's prospects as a widely adapted gaming platform took a turn for the worse.

Despite Nintendo's and Sony's grip on the mobile gaming sector, Nokia hasn't abandoned the N-Gage platform outright, and in fact relaunched the service, after some delays, as an application compatible with a host of Nokia phones in April. While support for the service has since been modest, Nokia today said Konami would begin adding its mobile games to the N-Gage's library.

Konami's first title to be available on the N-Gage will be Metal Gear Solid Mobile. Winner of the 2007 International Mobile Gaming Award, MGS Mobile features the series' signature tactical stealth action gameplay and an in-game camouflage system that implements real-world color samples captured by the mobile device's camera. The game was developed in conjunction with Ideaworks3D.

Metal Gear Solid Mobile is expected to arrive on Nokia's platform in June, in the same time frame as Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PlayStation 3. The publisher did not reveal pricing information and had not responded to requests for clarification as of press time. However, Nokia said when it launched the service that full games would be available for download priced at $8-$14 apiece.

the n-gage was a great device. over priced but soon became a real bargain. and seen as though it was basically a s60 nokia there was loads of freeware such a pico drive gensis emulator and piracy was also rampent. the n-gage then had abit of a cult following and still does. i think if nokia price the games well and release more game suitable devices they could be on to a real winner.

i just lost some respect for MGS and the team that develops/works on the franchise. No way should MGS be put on a 3rd tier platform. Ever.

Nintendo's grip on the handheld market is too tight. Don't see this taken off in the least.

I love the MGS series but I don't see myself specifically buying a Nokia phone just to play this. This is why I don't like cell phone games. Each company has it's own set of stuff.

Yeah, um, if Apple could get their butts in gear, they could make something of good quality that could also play games. You know, like a good version of the iPhone. Hell, all Sony would have to do is add cellular phone tech into their PSP and they'd have a phone that could also game worth buying... but since they'd rather take the lazy way out and just put skyp on it, we just have to settle for nothing, as the N-Gage isn't worth having either.

Konami's thoughts Step 1: Put MSG on all the lowest selling systems Step 2:... Step 3: Profit!

The N-Gage was actually a fairly good idea, just really horribly implemented. Phones just aren't meant for near-PSP-quality handheld gaming. Although, with technology advancing at the rate it is...

Yes. The original N-Gage and N-Gage phones, as well as their games/accessories/etc, are no longer in production. This new N-Gage is a service for many mobile phones. Not just one.

Konami, April Fools Day was almost two months ago. N-Gage? That thing was a disaster from the start. Why? Because gaming was an afterthought. Here's a better idea; Metal Gear Solid DS! Now THAT I'd buy!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Konami whoring the Metal Gear Solid series? I mean, sure it has a pretty good and popular series, but first practically begging for Snake to be in Brawl and now expanding the series to a practically nonexistent handheld that nobody cares about? The latter idea doesn't sound good at all, but hey if Konami is willing and able to spare the money they'll spend on bringing it to the N-Gage.

Mobile phone games are a total waste and the big, ugly zit of todays video game marketplace. They're often difficult to control (given the typical layout of phones), expensive, and very rarely offer any thing original. Sure its big in Japan with their advanced phone technology and the occasional publisher pushing new wares on them (Square-Enix being somewhat notorious for this as of recent years) but I think most US citizens agree that we'd rather game on a DS or PSP. I'm sure many RPG fans would be foaming at the mouth for ports of Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis and the recent direct sequel to Final Fantasy IV to the DS or PSP and here in the US, it makes better business sense. Just because the vast majority of consumers possess a device which is technically capable of gaming doesn't mean it's an ideal device for gaming.

From what i got from the article is that the N-Gage "phone" itself is no longer in production but other Nokia phones will be able to use the N-Gage system to play the games. Much like the Wii Virtual Console????

lol, just because, a system is no longer in production doesn't mean a developer can't make new games for it. New Sega Genesis games plz.

Why didn't they just make it for DS? They would have made a lot more money, and sold more copies. Making a game for a cell phone would be like making a movie that you can only watch on your dishwasher or fridge or something. Total waste of time and effort Konami. But I'm sure they are already very busy porting MGS4 to 360, so it's okay =)
