Konami has announced a new compilation pack series that bundles together a number of "iconic arcade games and classic console titles" into one package on modern systems. The Konami Anniversary Collection series, as it's called, is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The first in the series is the Konami Anniversary Arcade Classics, which launches on April 20, as a digital-only title for $20 USD. The package comes with the following games:

  • Haunted Castle
  • A-Jax
  • Nemesis
  • Vulcan Venture
  • Life Force
  • Thunder Cross
  • Scramble
  • TwinBee

In addition to the games, the package includes an ebook that contains extras like interviews with developers, sketches, and design documents that have reportedly never been seen by the public before.

Following that will be the Castlevania Anniversary Collection and the Contra Anniversary Collection, both of which are due out in Summer 2019. The Castlevania bundle comes with Castlevania, Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, and Super Castlevania IV, along with four other titles and an ebook to be revealed later.

The Contra package will include Contra, Super Contra, Super C, Contra III: The Alien Wars, and at least four games to be revealed later, along with a bonus ebook.

2019 is Konami's 50th anniversary.

@alastor529: Castlevania 4 was a bit of a letdown for me after 3. That game is love/hate. I'd had some innovations but a lot of regressions. Very linear, the art style is the ugliest Castlevania has looked apart from Haunted Castle. I also couldn't get into the soundtrack as much. Dracula X and Bloodlines brought the series back though.

@alastor529: I love the whole package. The sprite work, animations, music, level design, it's really good. Except the chiptune "before the boss" music sounds out of place. I bought a PC Engine Duo and recapped it myself (and added a cooling fan) especially for this game.

@girlusocrazy: Super Castlevania 4 was (yet another) remake of Castlevania 1. That's why.

The followup, Castlevania Dracula X: Rondo of Blood was where the series really shined in 16-bit.

@Elranzer: Yeah I realize, but I even liked the X68000 remake Chronicles better. It had some really good ideas but the way they came together wasn't as cohesive or refined as I'd expect from an experienced group of developers. Others have pointed out it feels like a tech demo and I agree with that. They tried a lot of new things and there are some crazy ideas. I wish they could have gone back and given it more time and more polish.

I guess it suffers from being an early SNES title where they weren't as experienced with the sound chip or designing large and full sprites while dealing with limited cart space of early games on the system. But there were better games out even at the time and as a huge fan of previous Castlevania games it felt anticlimactic that this was what they presented as a next gen entry.

But even taken as a standalone game it was inconsistent, some parts felt more refined and some felt like they were breaking new ground and maybe they could have spent more time to better realize those ideas.
