Konami acquiring Hudson

Metal Gear publisher picks up Bomberman house in stock-exchange deal set for April 1; mobile, social networking experience cited as reason for buyout.

By April, one of the gaming industry's oldest names will lose its independence. Konami announced this week that it has entered into a deal to acquire Bomberman creator Hudson as part of a stock swap. As per the terms of the deal, Hudson will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Konami effective April 1, subject to shareholder approval at a meeting on March 8.

Bomberman will soon have new corporate overlords.
Bomberman will soon have new corporate overlords.

According to terms of the deal, Konami will offer 0.188 shares of its own stock per one share of Hudson. The Metal Gear Solid publisher already owned a 53.99 percent stake in Hudson, with other primary investors including Osaka Securities Finance (2.4 percent), Barclays Capital Securities (1.42 percent), and Nintendo (1.04 percent).

Konami stated that its primary interest in bringing Hudson in house is the smaller company's performance in the social networking services sector, as well as mobile-game development.

"Above all in the Internet media industry, advanced function portable terminals 'smart phones' are becoming increasingly popular, and contents business opportunities for smart phones are expected to increase," Konami said as part of a filing. "Entering into new network services, including social network games, as considered with the booming [social network services] is expected to increase opportunities to recruit new users and the multifaceted development of our contents."

Konami noted that it expects the impact of the buyout on its own business operations and those of Hudson to be "minor." As such, no layoffs or staff reductions were announced as part of the buyout. According to filings, Hudson employed 496 employees as of March 31, 2010, while Konami's headcount stood at 5,708 staff during the same period.

Well I guess this is what happens when an industry grows to the point that the product now requires a budget of $Xmillions to make it financially successful.

0_0 Hudson was still around? It's been so long I thought they went out of business years ago. Damn, now that is a company that hung on for a long time. I still remembering playing their games back in the 8-bit days including Adventure Island and Bonk.

cool now maybe we'll get a new River City Ransom, Bloody Roar, Bomberman Adventure game like the 64 version, and other games that hudson is neglecting. I like Bith Konami and Hudson so I'm ok with this. Looking for Bomberman in the new Turtles in Time sequel.

@monson21502: omg! you are one of the few who knows those Good nes game (those should be on "Best Game no one played" list if gamespot existed back then). I should really add you on my friend list. river city was made by techno but techno was acquired by hudson later i think. Wats unfortunate is that river city and other sports game from same series don't sound the same in english version. but in japanese version, they are all 热血 games. (that was the name of the high school where the main character was from). There was river city randsom, there was samurai downtown ( samurai downtown has english version), there's a street basket ball in english, the hockey im not sure. But they are all funny and you can hit other players. Seriously it should be you know, made into 3d(like street fighter 4) while still being a 2 dimensional game and add online play. I think you can try to find roms of those, copyrights were probably expired so it should be legal.

All this merging and closing of game companies makes a sad picture of the future of gaming. :(

Heh, nice to know of a take-over that won't bring severe outcries from fans for once. I had expected laments and lots of whining, especially considering the fact that Konami is going to have Hudson specialize in social networking and mobile games even more than they already are.

@cytheh, i remember them all. did they also make river city randsom? you would think they would make a next gen of that with online co op or a online mode where you can join gangs and run the streets.

@monson21502 : oh yes, good old adventure island games! i dont know if you played adventure island 4 on nes, but it is great! you can choose your weapon/dragons (after you saved them or unlocked the weapon). the map is not linear, you can go back to previous areas. I dont understand why hudson didn't make more of the game

@wiidsduelpack I really miss Mario Party TBH. A lot of people got sick of the series, but I found it to be consistently enjoyable. Too bad. Looks like this is the end of the road for the franchise. :(

Oh my god... For some reason, I'm imagining a Bomberman/Metal Gear spinoff. That's prolly not gonna happen. What's going to happen is various easter eggs from Hudson being a part of the new MGS's.

Shame Hudson's not going to be independent anymore. Hopefully Konami will let them keep the classic "Bumblebee" logo. Great Hudson memories from the NES era.

Eh, this isn't such a great thing for Konami, the reason being is that Hudson hasn't really done much this gen besides make a few good games and a lot of games that were total garbage (Bomberman Act Zero, Deca Sports, etc.) I hope Hudson can get their act straight, I'd hate to see a classic company like them get shut down.
