Kojima's next project running on new Fox Engine

E3 2011: Programming toolset will pave way for future multiplatform releases aimed at "global audiences"; MGS: Rising on track for 2012; designer teaching at USC this fall.

The big news to come out of Konami's pre-Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference today pertained to the Metal Gear Solid and Zone of the Enders HD Collections, which will arrive for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this November and 2012, respectively. However, Konami VP and Kojima Productions head Hideo Kojima also offered a tease for his next project.

Kojima's Fox Engine is being tailored for multiplatform releases.
Kojima's Fox Engine is being tailored for multiplatform releases.

"We're still in the planning phase," Kojima said, noting that he will not be at this year's E3. "We're experimenting with some of the ideas we have, as well as researching, conducting interviews. From there, we take the necessary info we need and move forward. So when it comes to the title, the game system, or any kind of visuals, there's nothing I can really show you at this time."

However, Kojima did offer a look at the studio's all-new Fox Engine, which is being built for his next project. "Up until now, we have been developing games exclusively for specific platforms. But in the future, we look to go more global. And we are paving the road to go multiplatform for future titles. Of course, the dev tools are included, so hopefully, we can push out great games with shorter development times."

Kojima then offered a look at the Fox Engine, noting that the demo did not reflect his current title. The demo was set in a lush, tropical forest, overgrown with foliage. A large white horse stood saddled beside a man in camouflage garb, and what appeared to be a hunting dog was also nearby. With PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 controllers and a PC mouse before him, Kojima reemphasized that the engine was designed to accommodate multiple platforms.

The noted game designer said that he couldn't offer any more details on the project. However, he did note that his next game will use the Fox Engine, saying that it will be a multiplatform, Transfarring-enabled affair designed to appeal to a "global audience." Kojima also said that he plans to attend E3 2012.

Beyond his next project, Kojima briefly addressed Metal Gear Solid: Rising, which was announced for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2009. According to the designer, that game remains on track for release in 2012, as originally planned.

As one other interesting tidbit, Konami also confirmed during its pre-E3 press conference that Kojima will serve as a guest lecturer at the University of Southern California this fall. Kojima's talks will center upon game design.

@jubdeidamasta I disagree, Nintendo have loads (as always) and Sony have built-up a new line of exclusives this generation which is quite expansive. Microsoft on the other hand is severely lacking in the exclusives department.

imo, xbox n pc gamers (most of them, not all) are not that interested to play MGS games. if they really want to play MGS, they would buy a ps3 just to play MGS4...(the reason why i bought a console this gen)

Why are there so few system exclusive this generation? This makes owning one system over the other nearly pointless...

Am I the only one seeing Zanzibar Land in this demo? I've always wanted Kojima to remake MG1 and MG2 for this generation of consoles. The Fox engine is perfect for the setting of those to games!

I'm liking the Snatcher logo off to the left. A reboot or even sequel for that brilliant game would be incredible. Here's hoping.

Wait does this mean he wont be there, or any of his games, cause i hope rising is on the game floor with that co-producer Kojima works with who gave the project to him.

Stupid they wont be at the game floor considering MGS Rising was announced 2 years ago, and photos and a trailer have already come out. Shouldn't they reveal more. It's been a year since the last trailer

i am not a hand held gamer, it would be rad if they had a system or way for PS3 owners to play portable games, cause there are a few that I am interested in, but i don't see myself walking around with a device like that, unless it was a cellphone with all of the capabilities of the NGP... im sure that eventually they will come out with something like this way later in the future... Xperia Play is far from this concept & does not interest me in the slightest. the NGP looks very appealing to me (performance wise) & this transfarring program sounds like a great idea, but the idea of me carrying around a cellphone, keys, ipod, earphones, plus a bulky 7.17" long & 3.28" wide NGP in some random left over pocket or new pocket that i would have to stitch onto my clothing to fit the device, doesn't super win me over...nor am i fond of the idea of having to carry around a backpack whenever i wanted to use my NGP to ensure that i have a pocket/place to put it while i am on the go...but that is just me...

@pie369 Not to sound rude, but play some MGO and you'll answer your question. People thumbed me down as if the engine's flawless.

Hmmm, I was reading a article in a Game Informer mag, which states that a lot of Japanese devs don't like to share, or license other companies game engines, rather work on their own from the ground up. At least it won't be like the Unreal Engine, that thing was in every game it seems back in the early stages of the consoles. My number one anticipated engine will be the Frostbite 3! Cant wait to see that game in motion and what other titles Dice/EA use it for.

@PcGamingRig I imagine it's taking a while because it's different rather than it wasn't that thought out. After all using a sword in a way no other developer has tried before, having fast stealth (commented on by the devs) rather than slow stealth and having destructible set pieces / environments is something not done before in Metal Gear. I think the watermelon cutting was a tech demo rather than a 'we got nothing' show off since they could have just as easily filled it with action and that would have been easier since that's the norm.

@TheTenth10 I hope you bought an Xbox and Gamecube when the PS2 was 'holding them back' then rather than just spouting nonsense like a fanboy. 360 is quite powerful and the gap between the 360 and PS3 isn't that big to be honest and is certainly smaller than the PS2 to Xbox gap.

It's good to know that Kojima is the executive corporate officer director at Konami. I really hope this will mean a serious amount of good stuff from them.

Dude, microsoft need to come up with a portable device, cause that transfarring thing sounds way awesome, kind of like Nintendo should've done when it came up with the GBA/NGC connectivity, let's just hope developers will stand by it this time around.

@steelmouth when we first saw MGS Rising i think it was still pretty much an idea, they didn't have much besides watermelon cutting, and the physics is pretty advanced. so it's no suprise it is taking so long.

@steelmouth just mgs2, 3, and peace walker. i guess they figured the original mgs was already remade once before for the gamecube so it'd be ok to leave it alone.

@dre256x Your a moron, it's not that the Playstation isn't successful (MILLIONS of people using your product is by any definition a success) but Konami doesn't put out shovelware, games these days are costing A LOT more money to produce and at the end of the day these guys have to turn a profit. If Konami wanted to stick to Sony they would make much more PSP games since they don't have to spend as much to produce them but when it comes down to the console games that's where the money is really invested (and where the returns are higher), as a business they don't have the luxury of sticking with one system.

Kojima has always wanted to go multiplat... being hinting and toying about the idea for years, and I was surprised that MGS4 didn't make it to Xbox360 (yet). As a PS3 owner, i'm bitter sweet about this - but after a wonderful decade of dedication to Sony, Kojima-san more than deserves the free rein. can't wait for the actual reveal.

Kojima is the Miyamoto of Konami... Also the new Fox Engine is tailored to multi-platform because he now realizes that the Ps3 didn't turn out as successful or isn't so financially viable as he would have liked..Smart

Excited to see what Kojima will have under his sleeve for next year. Looks like he's going away from the Metal Gear franchise, which is fine by me seeing as how MGS4 wrapped up everything perfectly. It's nice to see him finally being able to move on to other projects and not doing another stint with Solid Snake because Konami was strong arming him.
