Kojima Was Very Worried that Death Stranding Would Leak Before E3, Says He Barely Slept

Hideo Kojima even had to use a separate bathroom at E3 so no one would know he was there.

Kojima Productions has released the latest HideoTube episode, and this one focuses on E3. One major point of discussion in the video is how Hideo Kojima was very nervous that, like so many other things at E3, his new PlayStation 4 and PC game, Death Stranding, would leak.

In the video, Kojima remarks that E3 announcements always tend to leak, and his past games are no exception. But for Death Stranding, Kojima made a major effort to ensure everything stayed under wraps--and you might be surprised to learn the lengths he went to.

"So every single year, there are leaks before E3. No matter how careful we are, in this era, something always makes its way to internet," he said. "Up until this year, at least half of our stuff had been leaked. And this time around, it was supposed to be a surprise.

"So we didn't let more than 5 people at Sony know about it. We kept it extremely secret. We absolutely didn't want this to be leaked."

Kojima even tried to hide the fact that he was visiting Los Angeles at all. He loves to tweet, but he did not tweet at all about his trip to southern California for the event. He also stayed at a hotel away from downtown, in hopes that he could remain undetected.

Some people did see him, when he went out to dinner and to a viewing of Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn's new movie, The Neon Demon. However, he declined to take pictures with fans over fears that they might show up online, leading people to make a link to his new game reveal.

"As E3 was getting close, many other titles were getting leaked," he said. "And we were thinking, 'How many could be left?' We were nervous; could barely sleep."

Death Stranding was officially announced during Sony's E3 2016 briefing on Monday, June 13. But there was a rehearsal beforehand, and for this, Kojima said he snuck in through the backdoor so no one would notice.

When the day of the show arrived, he got to the venue four hours early and remained backstage until the game reveal so no one would know an announcement was coming.

"Even when going to the bathroom, I had to use a separate restroom," he said.

According to Kotaku, Kojima also did not tell the band Low Roar, who supplied the song "I'll Keep Coming" for the Death Stranding trailer, what the song was being used for. Kojima told the band it was for an unspecified PlayStation game, and the group ultimately did not discover it was used in the Death Stranding trailer until the game's announcement.

Another interesting thing to note is that Kojima wore a t-shirt that said "D.S." on it during an appearance on Geoff Keighley's E3 show before the announcement. Kojima said he debated whether or not to even go on the show, but after agreeing to, he wanted to tease something. His "D.S." t-shirt didn't make a lot of sense then, but it definitely does now.

In other news about Death Stranding, Kojima said today at the Develop Conference that he thinks the game will be his best yet.

"So far, when I've been making games, I've had to give up on something or at least compromise on something in order to get things done," Kojima explained. "But this time, working with you [Mark Cerny] and you bringing the state of the art technologies, we will get around that [usual problem].

"I'm very confident that we're working towards something completely new and that no one has seen so far. This will be my best work so far, I'm very confident about that."

I'm probably going to be hunted down and viciously banned from the internet forever for saying this.... but the teaser video for this game left me totally bewildered, weirded out, and didn't really leave me with much of an impression at all. I'm not like DIS interested in the game, but I'm not really all that interested either. Honestly the trailer was kind of forgettable for me. For me, Kojima's games are just getting more and more bizarre. MGS5 was fun in spots, but also pretty strange. It's one of the first Metal Gear games I lost interested in and didn't finish.

@p1p3dream: I don't think they even have a game at this point. Half that stuff will probably be dropped once they get in to real production of the game.

Kojima wanted to make something weird & intriguing & he succeeded at that. He wanted to show that he had whatshisname from Walking Dead involved, he did that. He probably has ideas about what this project will be but games takes years & he's only just founded this studio. Personally I'd enjoy MGS more if it didn't have all the weird Kojimaesque stuff in it, MGS V would have been a better game without all the supernatural nonsense in my opinion but lots of people love it so who am I to judge?

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: I think we're of similar minds. Kojima has always been a master at game mechanics, and I was always really enthusiastic about how Kojima really tried to push the cinematic scope of his games and just spin these epic yarns. I can't say the stories really always made sense to me, but you know I recognize that he was writing the stories as he went along- so thats kind of what you get. Each Metal Gear game was a real showcase for whatever platform it was on, because he did everything he could to push the envelope and push the hardware to its limit. Metal Gear Solid 5 started out with a totally psychedelic and intriguing BANG in total Kojima style. We're so paranoid about Kojima mindfucking us at every turn that we just grasp on to every detail no matter how big or small. But then its like after such a intriguing and bombastic intro, he totally just leaves us out to dry. its kind of like you can literally see the point at which kojima stopped giving a **** about Konami because the story just kind of cuts. the beginning to the game was cool, but the rest of the game is kind of just like a sandbox stealth game with no narrative. as much as i hate to say it, i missd the convoluted nonsensical kojima storylines

What a load of nonsense -- get out and live a little, Kojima. One barely sleeps after a loved on is diagnosed with cancer. Statements his are pathetic -- just like saying it's an achievement to beat Dark Souls in 30 minutes. It's not. Gaming should be a petty distraction, not one's life's purpose.

all i can think about is how he outright decided to recast norman reedus and recycle the asset, then build a high res "world" around it, have the camera circle around and add some weirdness, seriously? whats there to steal? the name? using reedus? bet he can decide not to go with another studio as long as he's getting paid...

kojima is one of the most talented game designers around, but dude... the video showed nothing, but an unespecified concept and some graphics and reedus...

this is one of those games that i may buy after a good review comes out i guess

@captnforever: The only problem there is anything with Kojima's name attached to it will probably get a good review, because it's Kojima. I mean come on, did you see Peter Brown's review of The Phantom Pain? What a load of bullsh!t that review was. A perfect 10, f*** off!!!

@themacaster96: Most of the MGS V reviews were from a "bootcamp" where they got about 40 hours with the game. It wasn't til a few weeks later that people began to figure out that a huge chunk of the game was simply misisng, patched up & shipped out regardless. It was a great game but giving a 10 to anything that's unfinished, whether or not you think 10 means "perfect", is too much.

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: Well then they shouldn't review a game until they finish it. MGSV is the most overrated MGS ever and the worst, it deserves 6/10! I'm sure Konami paid for those reviews.

I'm going to echo the sentiment of "what is there to leak, exactly?" At this point it's just a really, really vague concept video. Would sales of the game that will eventually exist that will probably have something to do with this video really have been harmed by people finding out about this video a few weeks early?

He just started working on DS a few months ago now, and already knows it will be his best game yet. Kojima knows how to stoke the Hype Train like none other, but what sets him apart from the chaff is he always backs it up. Can't wait to see more.

There was nothing to leak. And these studios need to look at their own staff if they want to put an end to leaks.

@straightcur: Most of the time it doesn't come from a studio, but one of the many third party marketing and distribution people they partner with to disseminate things.

wow for Kojima to not get any sleep for his new game, man Konami really messed him up. Kojima also tweeted basic things like he was watching bluray movies that he buys so no one would know he was at in LA for E3

Unless the trailer itself leaked, I think any rumor would have probably been dismissed since it still seemed too early for him to have anything to show for his game. It might have still been too early depending on how long it takes to make and release.

When Kojima does anything everyone is all over it like flies round sh!t.

Seriously, though Kojima can't even take a sh!t without someone writing an article about it.
