Kojima: My Mission "Is to Keep on Making Big Games for as Long as I Can"

The Metal Gear creator discusses his future in game development.

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima remains intent on making "big games" in the wake of his departure from Konami, a task that he feels is his "role in this world."

No Caption Provided

In a new interview with the New Yorker, Kojima revealed he considered taking a year-long trip to a deserted island after leaving Konami under reportedly less-than-amicable terms. He shared the plan with "a Hollywood friend" who suggested he instead keep working.

"Hearing that affirmed to me that my role in this world is to keep on making big games for as long as I can," Kojima said. "That is the mission I've been given in life."

Despite this, Kojima suggested earlier this week that the first project from his new studio, Kojima Productions, could be "smaller-scale." Following whatever that first game turns out to be, the studio "could consider movies, animations, anything."

In the new interview, Kojima seemed to be happy with the flexibility that being independent provides.

"When working in big companies, especially Japanese companies, every little thing has to be approved beforehand, and you need paperwork to do anything," he explained. "Now that I'm independent, I can do what I want with much more speed. I don't need to invest time in unnecessary presentations. I shoulder the risk.”

That extends to being allowed to speak more freely. "When I was in a company, my personal statements could be taken as the overall direction of the company," he said. "As such, I couldn't say just anything."

While Konami has said it intends to keep the Metal Gear franchise going, we know the company is going to focus more heavily on mobile development. It's unclear if Kojima was commenting directly on his former employer, but this shift is brought up by the New Yorker, which then quotes Kojima as saying, "If you're only focused on the profits immediately in front of you, the times will leave you behind. It becomes impossible to catch up again."

Sony announced earlier this week that it's partnering with Kojima Productions on its first game. That title will debut on PlayStation 4 before later being released for PC.

Lmao, both IGA and Kojima made some pretty sneaky side-jabs at Konami.

Anyways, looking forward to his new IP - it'll probably take a while before he could possess the sufficient funds to make huge games again but at least he wouldn't be held back by MGS (He probably kept working on MGS probably since he didn't want anyone else handling Snake or the IP.) or Konami's "creative decisions" anymore.

@razik: My guess is that he's independent as in, not an employee of Sony...they are giving him creative freedom to make the game he wants and are just footing the bill.

I dont know why everyone jumps to his defence. They know nothing about why he was fired.

For all we know the guy was touching the CEOs little kid and youre all jumping to defend him without having a clue.

"But nah its fine, he makes good games."

@Myron117: You're just saying that because of jealousy and wished it was you who Kojima was touching, pervert.

@Myron117: There has been substantial evidence of konami being very abusive to their staffs, and given their recent behavior in the industry there is little to no reason to doubt Kojima.

@Myron117: So should we assume the worst because we don't know what happened? Should we just presume he did something horrible and hate him for it even if we have no clue of the reason he left? No. People assume he's the one being wronged and jump to his defense because Konami have been acting like total douchebags since he left.

At the level of hype that surrounds him, I doubt companies won't match his desired budget regardless of how huge it is. So he's pretty much free to do whatever he likes. Which is damn exciting.

His days of making big games are over now, he doesn't have Konami financially backing him. Sony sure as hell don't have millions and millions of dollar to give him. So the only way I can see him making a big game again, is if he goes to kickstarter.

@i_p_daily: 1. Did you just say Sony doesn't have millions and millions of dollars to give him? LOL.

2. Even if Sony for some reason didn't want to invest, any given company/publisher would relish the opportunity of funding whatever Kojima plans to make next.

He may encounter various issues in his new endavour, but money is not one of those.

@louixiii: I didn't say they wouldn't back him financially, but there's no way Sony will put out the sort of money Konami did for MGS5, and if you think they will, then you should lay off the pipe.

@i_p_daily: That's bullshit. Do you know how much development cost nowadays? If Sony thinks they can make a profit, trust...they'll kick it. Besides, a couple million on a AAA title is pennies. If one game sells 500k at $59.99, that's their money back plus a extra million. And since it's a Kojima game, it's almost guranteed to sell a million copies in a week if not more. Do the math before you speak on things you don't know...and PLEASE...put the pipe down.

When he kept saying Metal Gear was going to be the last he kept making more until Konami kicked his ass out of the company. So does this 'really' mean he will stop making games now that he wants to forever make more?

I see a bright future ahead for him. With Sony backing, in a few years, he can just buy the whole crumbling Konami and use its Fox engine to complete MGSV. Further, revive Silent Hill into the next jewel of the horror genre.

@solid_snake1461: Nice fantasy land you live in there lol.

Konami's last quarter profits went up by 159% so Kojima will be waiting a long while before he can buy the "crumbling" (as you put it) Konami.

@i_p_daily Konami's profits went up because of MGSV and without MGS Konami doesn't have anything to offer anymore, so the company is dying and if they make another MGS won't be that good cause it won't be made by HIDEO KOJIMA:

Hope it's a spiritual successor of that Silent Hill game they were planning. Still have that PT demo and my sisters love it. No other game like it out there that I've seen.

@G-Corleone: i play mgs since the begining, first one was an amazing cbm 64 version in english and far better looking than msx.

the serie never ceased to amaze chapter after chapter, with ground breaking gameplay mechanics, fantastic character desing and

background, the story of big boss is so epic, from the cold war to msf and mother base.

thank you for giving us 30 years of great gaming experience, may your road give us some 25 years more ^^.
