A fallout between Kojima Productions and its publisher, Konami, has led to senior staff at the studio given restricted access to corporate internet, emails, and phone calls, GameSpot understands.

Along with the restricted communications, key developers at the studio, such as Hideo Kojima, will now have limited opportunities to lend their appearance to promotions of the studio’s upcoming game, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

Power struggles between Kojima Productions and Konami have convinced the publisher to make drastic changes, including amending the employee status of its Metal Gear team. Some senior staff at the studio, including Kojima, now essentially work as contractors, not permanent employees.

The extraordinary measures were revealed by a source within Konami, speaking to GameSpot on the condition of anonymity. The person explained that, once the Phantom Pain project is finished, in all likelihood the management at the studio will disband.

"After we finish MGSV, Mr. Kojima and upper management will leave Konami. They said their contract ends in December," the source claimed.

The person added: "At a team meeting, Mr Kojima explained that team have to be one and make a good game for fans."

Kojima, now 51, joined Konami in 1986. His departure from the company will bring an end to nearly three decades of service.

In other developments, Konami has begun erasing the Kojima Productions logo from all official Metal Gear art, and it has demoted Kojima off its executive team. Meanwhile, Kojima Productions’ branding has also been removed from Twitter, the official Metal Gear website, and even the LA office listing.

Representatives for Konami would not discuss specifics of the matter when contacted by GameSpot. The corporation has offered a statement, however.

It reads: "Konami Digital Entertainment, including Mr. Kojima, will continue to develop and support Metal Gear products. Please look forward to future announcements."

The corporation's central public relations team, based in Tokyo, is unavailable at the time of going to press, due to it being past midnight local time.

Metal Gear Solid 5, Kojima’s latest iteration in the famed series, ships in September on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

An expanded statement from Konami follows: "As we have already announced, we are shifting our production structure to a headquarters-controlled system, in order to establish a steadfast operating base capable of responding to the rapid market changes that surround our digital entertainment business. Konami Digital Entertainment (including Mr. Kojima), will continue to develop and support Metal Gear products. Please look forward to future announcements."

<< LINK REMOVED >> how so? silent hill has been abysmal for over 10 years. konami put the suikoden franchise to rest. they don't even have development teams who are capable of doing their old franchises justice. the neglect of their old franchises has nothing to do with kojima. konami could have still worked on other series while mgs was being produced. it sounds like konami only wanted and still continues to want mgs to be the focus of the company. that won't change once kojima leaves.

<< LINK REMOVED >> konami issued a press release recently... they plan on making more mgs games even once kojima leaves. they will make more sequels against kojima's will and the games will quickly degrade in quality from average to terrible. that seems like the most likely scenario.

After fall of 1 of their Iconic titles which is PES (since PES 2014) they should not lose someone like Kojima. Its not a random game developer , this is the legendary HIDEO KOJIMA. Such a shame for KONAMI .....

Konami is one of the biggest poker machine manufacturers in the world. They'll do fine on their own. I'm betting they'll become a third party publisher like Sega if they stay in the games business. They own a few franchises that have some value but no good dev teams.

So sad Kojima won't complete Silent Hills. Where does this leave the Fox Engine? Who owns it? Kojima or Konami?

I suppose this is the end for the MGS series (Konami will retain all rights to Kojima Production's games). On the bright side, at least we can look forward to an entirely new game from Kojima.

BEST NEWS EVER!!! Woohoo!!! Now maybe Konami will start focusing on their other great franchises such as Zone of The Enders and Contra :D I can't wait!!!

Now that Kojima's getting the boot, Konami will hopefully get us a new ZOE instead of shoveling more Metal Gear down our throats :D

<< LINK REMOVED >> Actually Kojima was the one pushing for Konami to let him make another ZOE. It's been known for a while that Konami was the one pushing down gamers throat the MG series as their preferred cash cow. I've read many interviews where Kojima stated that he wanted to branch out to other IPs but Konami was stubbornly against it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah and we see how well he's been handling that lately.

Like I said, bye bye Kojima, Konami doesn't need you.

Now they can start focusing back on a bunch of their other great franchises like Silent Hill, Suikoden, Airforce Delta, Mystical Ninja, Contra, Ninja Turtles (if they can get the license as Konami were the only company to make great Ninja Turtles games), Gradius, Focus on making better Castlevania games, Sunset Riders, Xmen (If they can get the license), Bayou Billy, Rocket Knight/Sparkster, Vandal Hearts, Nightmare Creatures, Azure Dreams, Kensei: Sacred Fist (if they wanna do a sequel to this fighting game), Rumble Roses and many more.

Bye Kojima take your Metal Gear with you.

<< LINK REMOVED >>

You do know KONAMI had him focused on MG over ZOE (and all of his other works) since that was a huge money maker for them. Kojima's talked about leaving the MG franchise on and off for a while and supposedly mentioned work on ZOE3 but Konami wants MG since it obviously sells to more people. Also you can tell by comments all over this article that Kojima's team was the one helming a new Silent Hill, not another outsourced developer.
