Kojima Apparently Asked Bleszinski to Work on New Silent Hill With Him

But the Gears of War designer says he declined; "I woulda f**ked up SH."

At some point in time, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima apparently asked Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski to work on a new Silent Hill game with him, but Bleszinski declined for a number of reasons.

No Caption Provided

Bleszinski, who now heads up Lawbreakers studio Boss Key in North Carolina, said on Twitter that he was "flattered" by the offer. But he ultimately said no, one reason being that the job would have required Bleszinski to move to Los Angeles. He says that's not his favorite city.

Plus, Bleszinski said he would have rather worked on a brand new franchise, which he eventually did with the gravity-bending shooter Lawbreakers. Blesiznski went on to say that, had he partnered with Kojima, it wouldn't have gone well. "I woulda f**ked up Silent Hill," he said (via GameWatcher).

Bleszinski didn't provide any kind of timeline for when this offer was made. He left Epic Games in October 2012 and later went on a tour of sorts, visiting the offices of Activision, Zynga, Double Fine, and Electronic Arts. He was also courted by Ubisoft. It's possible it could have been in this time period that Kojima came to Bleszinski with the offer, though this is not confirmed.

Kojima eventually partnered with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro for a new Silent Hill game that would have featured The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus. This game, Silent Hills, was later canceled, a move that del Toro said "makes no f**king sense." Kojima has since left Silent Hill publisher Konami altogether.

Kojima and del Toro will reunite later this month when they speak together at a gaming event.

As for the Silent Hill series, Konami has said it is "committed to new Silent Hill titles," though no future games have been announced.

We will never know now. If he was willing to tread into unkown ground, it'd either end up a masterpiece or complete crap. In any case ,SH is gone now, except if Kojima and Sony revive the Project under a different name. You know like "The hills do not speak"

I would have to say horror is definitely the genre I would **** up too. I am not a fan of horror games or movies whatsoever. RE4 thats about it. Action Adventure would be my style.

Silent Hill is a precious franchise. So I have to give the dude some credit, if he really feels that he wouldn't do Silent Hill Justice.

Silent Hill, as I remember it, has been dead for a long time now. I hope Kojima is able to make a true, spiritual successor to the Silent Hill games at some point in the near future and I hope they are just as awesome as the first four Silent Hill games. =)

Disaster averted. Cliff would have made Silent Hill multiplayer-only and render all of his characters like lumbering XTREEEEEME bodybuilders who look like they can't run 10 feet without dying yet somehow sprint around like douchey antelopes. Worse, Cliff might not be able to fight off his personal addiction with the Guy Fieri character design button and give all Silent Hill characters frosted tips and random soul patches or chin straps.

@thunderborne: At least he knows he wasn't the man for the job. He didn't let pride get in the way and kindly declined acknowledging it wasn't his forte. Respect for that, knowing how the industry is and humanity in general.

@triplebullet: I would agree with you, but this is Cliff aka CliffyB here. You're giving him too much credit. Cliff tweeted this to feed his ego. This is his M.O. He only said he wasn't fit for the job in a followup tweet. He has an uncanny ability to make any game topic about him.

@kentray1985: You are right. I don't know Cliff. I don't know his mindset. All I have to go on are the questionable things he has done or said publicly in the past. One could either speculate that he's just an emo jerk or doing it for attention. I chose the latter because I am being nice.

That seems....strange. Why in the hell would Kojima ask a Gears dev to work on Silent Hill? What is this, the Twilight Zone? At least dude is being honest. He would have most certainly fucked up SH.

@reduc_ab_: But did he code it? Cliff can. Kojima needs a new team. Wikipedia sez he's not familiar w/programming (checked just to be sure) and have never heard of him doing any of that and have followed him for a long time.

@girlusocrazy: At the time he did have a team that coded everything. This was a little while back. I mean, he still does have a team presently, I'm sure. Kojima Productions did not just vanish; some of his guys followed him undoubtedly.

@reduc_ab_: Yeah but they have to start from scratch in the sense that no assets, no code, nothing came with these guys when they left Konami. Anyway it was just my theory, I have no real idea what's going on...

That's cool, maybe they can get together on something else. Cliffy's worked in the industry for a long time and started from scratch, pushing hardware almost like Carmack. I got respect for him.

Back when everyone on PC was jealous of consoles like SNES and Genesis for doing parallax scrolling, scaling, rotation, tons of sprites on screen... And the PC could barely scroll the screen smoothly.

Before even good 2D acceleration came to PC, Cliffy brought games that could match some of the best Japanese console games that PC got none of. He helped get PC action games off the ground and kept getting better even into the 360. Helped build one of the best engines in gaming today. That's a long time.

I respect Cliffy B for realizing you need a certain artistic talent in order to make a game like Silent Hill. Something he doesn't have.

Kojima is trying to add FPS elements to his games. He first visited Call of Duty studios before making MGS4.

Perhaps he was trying to get the gears of war gameplay into silent hill. But I don't really see how hard it is to change a camera view.

@randybumgardner: Yes. That's why he asked Ryan Payton to help with MGS4 as well.

It's not about changing camera view, it's about knowing the western audience, perhaps Kojima wants someone who lived and breathed it as well as respected Japanese games. Cliff is that man.

This for sure happened when Kojima were still a Konami employe, he can't touch the IP since (unfortunately) it's Konami property.

He could however make the game with a different name which would be amazing i gotta say.

@nadsat-77: Didn't even seem like it needed the Silent Hill name anyway. The P.T. demo was awesome, but it was nothing like previous games in the franchise. That's why I don't see why Kojima and Del Toro can't just change the title (Hell, just roll with the 'P.T.' moniker) and go with the same core concept with a different publisher backing them.

@JustPlainLucas: Cliff is one of the least humble figures in the industry. His endless self-promotion has been ridiculous over the years. This essentially is a humble brag. This is like me tweeting, "George Lucas handpicked me to work on the sequel to Star Wars at Skywalker Ranch. I am honored, but I declined."
