Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning IP Acquired By THQ
THQ Nordic acquires another forgotten IP.
Following its acquisition of the TimeSplitters IP this past August, THQ Nordic has purchased the rights to another forgotten video game property. The publisher announced it has acquired 38 Studios' last-gen RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, along with the developer's abandoned MMO, Project Copernicus.
Originally released for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC back in 2012, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is an action RPG set in an original fantasy world. The game attracted attention for having several high-profile names attached to it. Fantasy author R.A. Salvatore (the Forgotten Realms series) penned the game's lore; comic artist and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane worked on its art; and Grant Kirkhope composed its soundtrack.
The title was generally well received upon its release. GameSpot praised it for its satisfying combat and loot systems, but criticized the game for its lack of identity. We awarded it a 7.5/10 in our original Kingdoms of Amalur review and wrote:
"How much you love Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning depends on what you look for in a role-playing game. Let's say you long for a pervasive sense of time and place, for a great story featuring memorable characters, or for varied quests given weight by superb context. If that's you, then Kingdoms of Amalur will disappoint. Then again, you might want wonderful battles against cool creatures, terrific looting and leveling, and lots of ways to customize your skills and equipment. If so, then this is the world you should inhabit. The context is hardly inspired, but you'll be having so much fun that you may not care."
Despite its generally positive reception, Kingdoms of Amalur struggled commercially, and developer 38 Studios encountered some well publicized financial and legal troubles, leading to its eventual shutdown and the cancellation of the Copernicus MMO.
