Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was a 2012 action-RPG that had a surprising number of things going for it, and it's finally making its way to modern platforms later this year. With a new subtitle, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning will release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The Kingdoms of Amalur remaster will launch tomorrow, September 8, 2020, publisher THQ Nordic announced, and it's up for pre-order now.

Originally released on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was generally well-received and earned a 7.5/10 in GameSpot's Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning review for its top-notch combat, flexible character advancement, and expansive world, although former reviews editor Kevin VanOrd noted its overall generic world and story.

"In the future, when you talk about Kingdoms of Amalur, the first thing you will probably mention is how fun the battles were," he wrote back in 2012. "Incredibly, this RPG's combat is so exciting, it could have been used in a pure action game and would have held up just fine. In fact, from a swordplay, loot, and leveling perspective, Kingdoms of Amalur is as good as any RPG in recent memory. This is the role-playing game you should be playing if excellent action and progression are your primary concern."

Despite its popularity, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was surrounded by drama when its original developer, 38 Studios, declared bankruptcy and shut down, eventually leading its home state of Rhode Island to sue the studio's founder over a controversial $75 million loan. In September 2018, THQ Nordic acquired the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur, although the company confirmed to Eurogamer at the time that Electronic Arts still holds publishing rights, requiring EA's approval for a remaster.

Whether you played the original RPG or are just hearing about Kingdoms of Amalur, the remaster will be the perfect chance to return to Amalur or explore it for the first time with improved visuals, refined gameplay, and all DLC unlocked.
