Now Playing: Kingdom Hearts 3 Breaks Franchise Sales Records - GS News Update

Kingdom Hearts 3 has shipped more than five million copies, according to Square Enix. The figure, which includes digital and physical sales, makes it the fastest selling game in the series. This is a shipped figure instead of sold through to customers, but it's still an impressive feat for the first week on the market.

The high sales make sense, given the anticipation for this third installment. Kingdom Hearts 2 released more than a decade ago, so fans have been waiting a long time for the conclusion of the story. Though the time between has been filled with side-stories that fill in some gaps, like Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance, the first numbered entry in so long was bound to make a splash.

If you're getting ready to embark on your own journey through Disney worlds, be sure to check out our best tips before you get started, along with where to find the Lucky Emblems so you can unlock the secret movie. Or just read up on everything we know, including a story recap to get you caught up to speed.

"What sticks with me is the exciting battle against elemental titans with Hercules, taking Rapunzel out into the unfamiliar wide world for the first time, snapping selfies with Winnie the Pooh, and going toe to toe with Davy Jones," critic Tamoor Hussain wrote in GameSpot's review. "In 2002, as Sora, I left Destiny Islands to travel across the universe and make new friends. In 2019 I brought old ones home, and I had so much fun doing it."

Does anyone know the profit split between Square and Disney? How much is the mouse making on these titles, I think the Avengers game could be a huge deal for both companies if executed well.

Well deserved, Square Enix. Just beat the game and will probably play the whole series over again sometime this year

I'll pick it up when it comes to my library. I wish Square would stop trotting out these "shipped" numbers. While it is probably the case that the sell-through numbers will be strong for KH3, there are plenty of times that these games rot on store shelves.

@rickjamesia(which I hope is Rick James in Iowa): I feel you on that, but that's a problem with the whole of the JRPG industry.

Nice. I got my copy of the game sitting right but haven’t started playing it yet, busy with Resident Evil 2 Remake and the one year anniversary event in Monster Hunter World right now. Really looking forward to start playing it, maybe this weekend.

5 million units!?

It should be noted that those are shipped vs sold but still this is a monumental achievement for the series as well as an indication of the demand for this long-awaited sequel.

While we will have to wait a while to discern just how well this game actually sells a figure close to the overall shipped so far and even more is probably not a stretch. I don’t think it should surprise many as not only does the franchise have a rabid fan following but the extended time off between true sequels has made that fanbase even more voracious for this title then it would have been if it had released a year or 2 after the last installment.

Gamers have already crossed off 2 long awaited titles off of their gaming bucket list this year already in the way of KH3 and last weeks RE2 Remake (highly recommended by the way.) so to say that right now they are on cloud 9 is probably a huge understatement.

Oh I'm sure, to bad everything they claimed is a lie, sure I'd make recording breaking sales if I announced Half-life 3 and then made the first hour seem legit then make the rest a pile of rushed nonsense, this game is a rushed mess of a KH game, has no closure, doesn't end without being another stupid Squareenix Bitter ending to be sad to just be sad and then sequel baited the hell out of it. This game didn't resolve anything and was a complete mess.

@Zignoff: did have closure - squeal baiting yes - the game did resolve everything - it left open the question for the squeal baiting what is the black box the original guardians have- what are sora and riku doing where they are

all plot points from the previous games have concluded

@Zignoff: I admit, I'm not all the way through the game and I haven't paid attention since the second, but it seems pretty close in line with the second game and everything I saw from the gameplay reveals so far has matched up with my experience. It seems like they were pretty up-front with how the game was going to play, though I could maybe see story related things as being a little off. That said, taking in to account who is creating the game, I think this is the least convoluted Square Enix game/series I've played before. I'm pretty sure it has the least number of moments that I'm like "Why in the world am I even fighting this now?" or "Oh really? This random character is actually a super powerful pseudo-deity? And now my bit character is making a heroic sacrifice?". I mean, I like Square, but they have never gotten over completely hamming up their plots. They get stuck in the idea that the fate of the world/universe/reality is in the balance (even if only suddenly for no reason at the last half hour) and your main character is both crucial to the cause and the solution.

Can't wait to get home and play it this weekend!

Bleh, just shipped, it will do around what other entries did. Maybe better but not by much. Still waiting for the day Square makes another legendary game that captivates the entire industry. Last time was been well over a decade ago.

@yeezer: Wich was? (serious question, imho, the last game they did "right" was FF12, wich no one seems to like).

Avatar image for pharoe777

@everson_rm: I loved FF XII !

@pharoe777: Me too!

"Kingdom Hearts is MONEY!"

I'll eventually get around to buying and playing this.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

It's not for me, but congrats to Square and I hope people who bought it enjoy it.

Avatar image for everson_rm

@girlusocrazy: Funny thing is, after so many spinoffs, side stories etc its not for me either, and i played the crap out of the first one, back in the day (i was an adult back them). Also the second one, but in that everything was starting to get confusing.
