Kinect sells 2.5 million in 25 days

Microsoft says its motion-sensing system is on track to hit 5 million units sold by year's end.

Hot on the heels of Nintendo's announcement that it had sold 1.5 million units of hardware over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend, Microsoft has struck back with some sales numbers of its own. Today, the software giant said that its Kinect motion-sensing system has sold 2.5 million units worldwide in its first 25 days on the market. The peripheral's milestone comes in the wake of a reported $500 million marketing campaign to promote the device.

2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.
2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.

Microsoft said the Kinect was on track to sell 5 million by year's end, in line with the company's previously announced target. The system went on sale in North America on November 4, with its European rollout occurring November 10 and its Japanese release following on November 20.

Currently, the Kinect system is offered as a stand-alone unit for $150, a hefty premium over the device's $56 estimated cost in parts. Two bundles are also available: a $300 4GB Xbox 360 package and a $400 250GB Xbox 360 loadout. All bundles also include Kinect Adventures, just one of the 17 games that were released in November.

not really surprised. It's a great addition for gaming with family and friends. If you have people come over a lot that are not hardcore gamers do you really think they are going to get deep into Fallout New Vegas or Call of Duty? Of course not. But break out the Kinect Sports or the Kinect Adventures and people can have fun playing. On that subject, Kinect is NOTHING like move or Wii. With Kinect you actually DO many of the events. In Kinect sports you actually run in place and jump when it is time to jump. In Dance Central the tech of Wii or Move doesn't come close to watching your body, legs, hands, and head movements like Kinect. For now, Kinect is filling a market of party games and family friendly games that get people moving. It plays somewhat like Wii for some games but because Kinect can track all your body movements instead of just where you move a sensor it opens up a lot of possibilities. Hopefully they will hit their 5 million and we will see voice commands added to hardcore games to use along side the standard controller. Point with one of your hands and saying "Alpha Team Flank Right" is a LOT better interface than pressing RB, using the control stick to pick your team on the dial, then picking the exact attack angle with the d-control. Voice commands will allow gamers alternatives to a lot of button pushing. I expect soon in most FPS games we will be able to 'throw' a grenade rather than just hitting a button.

All you haters out there make me laugh. Po'd that MS is selling kinect, that they brought something to the market that people want. I was sceptical until I had it home playing it, with no problems at all don't knock something untill you have tried it for more that 5 mins at a best buy.

Getting a 360 Slim next month... without Kinect. How they write "Ready for Kinect !! :DDD" on the packaging is funny. There isn't a single game worth it.

Honestly, I don't see how this can be. I don't know a single soul who has a kinect, nor wants one. And in terms of casual gamers, both my grandparents and aunt and uncle compared a Wii and Kinect over Thanksgiving break at Best Buy, and they both decided to buy Wii's of their own.

Agreed. One wonders how many units are being purchased then hacked for purposes other than playing Kinect games.

To begin with...there are many items that are sold at 3 or 4 times the actual cost to manufacture them. As far as motion gaming goes...i think it's a great concept and that sony and microsoft are picking up where nintendo dropped the ball. I own both systems and have both the move and kinect and enjoy both respectively however i play my ps3 alot more than my 360. the games just look better on a 61" samsung dlp

i don't dig the motion controllers, i have seen very few games with any depth were motion controls were required. isn't the good thing about motion controllers that they are capable of immersion, so why are we only making games for them which theres no point getting immersed in?

Good for Microsoft but I personally really don't care about Kinect or Move and won't be getting either if nothing changes. The basic Wii waggle is more than enough for me... On a side note, I have to agree with what someone mentioned about the Wii not delivering in game diversity (every AAA game being a 'cutesy' 1st party franchise is not what I call diversity. Not that there is anything wrong with 'cutesy' but I want some realistic/'mature' games too). So yeah, their 70-80million sales does nothing for me. Oh and finally, other than perhaps from Nintendo who needs to catch up in power and online implementation, I really don't want to see 720/PS4 anytime soon. I'm just about to get a PS3 for myself and the 5-year cycles we have had before are just frustrating on the wallet and what you bought up to that point.

@da_chub fair point about the wii's game library, but you have to admit the vast majority of the people who bought it don't care about those games, they only bought it for the 5 minute party appeal. Obviously all the core fans bought it too but when the dust settles the innitial sales insanity around the wii was all to do with the casual market, which is a shame because I liked my gamecube and the wii just didn't succeed it properly if you ask me. But thats only my opinion The 360 isn't "Outdated" at all, both current consoles are still current and relevant, is there really a need for the next jump in hardware? I don't think so, especially with that On-live system coming soon, people will begin to rethink the whole idea of buying the next ridiculously expensive piece of kit for a while. we could be seeing a new trend where the console companies have to back their equipment for a lot longer. thats the way I see it anyway, who knows?

the game industry actually fuels and liks the console/fanboys wars, which other industry publish thier sales figurs on such regular bases i dont see sony telling us how many tvs, cameras, dvd players they sold but when it comes to the ps3 they not only give the hardware sales but olso software sales which to me is the equivalens of publishing the dvd sales but i ant mad at the industry let the war flame on

@dcultrapro see i have a wii and over 70 games. but i have 7 games for my ps3 because one i play and beat most ps3 games...they have no replay. but i still enjoy playing SMG1 even though im still playinSMG2. Wii might be a fad, but its games are not. And core gamers will continue to support Wii. look at the last 6 months of games(DKC, kirby, mario, metroid, goldeneye, monter hunter, NBA jam, red steel 2 etc..) these games are just as good as anything in HD on my PS3. It would be nice to see the console gen last 4-5 more years, with price drops and sales declining...xbox is almost as out dated as wii. Next gen might be 2-3 years away.

@da_chub Your comment is pretty much irrelevant mate without wishing to sound harsh, but both companies have been quoted as expecting their current consoles to have another 4-5 years of life left in them, thats WHY they've released these add ons in the first place, the 360 and ps3 have lots of life left in them where as the WII is experiencing a massive decline due to the incredible success of its first 2 years having passed and faded, it was a fad, which is sad but hey it was Nintendo's choice. now all those hardcore Nintendo fans are all that will be left and they won't hang around long because of the complete lack of hard core games or top quality cross platform titles. Its a shame, I quite liked the wii for about 5 minutes

the kinect and move would be great addons expect they will be a complete waste of time and money if we see a new gen in less then 2 years. It will take time or devs to make really good games for it. Just like Wii, launch titles where ok, but compared to what Wii gets now. I just hope we all didnt waste our money.

1. Why is this turning into a console war. Behave yourselves children! 2. The Kinect is a lot of fun if you use it for it intended current use, namely family and party fun. 3. Do what the adult gamers do - use your PS3 and Xbox 360 for so called hardcore games and the Kinect and Move for point 2 above. 4. Thank you.

Kinect is becoming far more than an X360 peripheral, now that it's been hacked by PC programmers. Take a look at << LINK REMOVED >>, in which a guy uses a Kinect to capture a 3D image of himself in real time and then pans and scrolls the camera around himself!

I don't know how it's selling so many given it's price point. Then again, you only need one unit for multiplayer whereas with others, you have to buy each single handset, so it's probably about even or maybe slightly cheaper overall for the max number of players. Plus, I saw one the other day, the first time I've seen a Kinect in the flesh, and daaaamn, it's massive(!) I was expecting this little webcam size thing, but it's mahoosive, almost as long as a 360 itself laying flat. Very surprised. I won't be buying one any time soon, that's for sure.

@method115 Yes, games are largely subjective. But my point was more about how the kinect's target demographic/s are being sold videogames in the guise of something more useful, and that the purpose of the kinect is to take advantage of the stupid.

"i have a 360 and a ps3 and i can honestly say...i will not be buying kinect meh...ps3 is better" Thats merely a matter of personal perference which is'nt even the point anyway. This is about the 360 and Kinect, if you wan't to play in this console war be my guest, but you'll have to go elsewhere to sound your imature yawp.

@kavadias1981 I agree entirely, a hardcore game simply wont work. What we WILL get is games that use normal controls for the most part but have extra sections for Kinect... which is perfectly fine for me. But have you heard of the following awesome games coming to Kinect? Project Draco (Made by the people who created Panzer Dragoon?) Haunt Codename D Steel Batallion Star Wars Kinect all of these are aimed more at the usual 360 market. Obviously the system is meant for a more casual game play style but it will be integrated into hardcore games eventually AND it is already integrated into the dashboard system and could(Hopefully) be more integrated in the near future... the system has a ridiculous amount of potential, for other applications too

even assuming they make 100$ a piece worldwide thats still a massive loss so far with the advertising taking into consideration! When development costs are added its unlikely they will ever turn a profit from this thing. (Yes im aware most their profits comes from games, i just dont see any serious xbox360 market for motion shovelware)

@SooHooSan Take it from someone who owns both mate, the Kinect is pretty damn awesome, its motion controls are better in every way than the Wii, the wii remote is pretty poor by comparison, and once you actually drop the controller for these games there is an almost child like joy at learning this new, intuitive way of playing games. I have Kinectimals, Kinect sports and Kinect Adventures and have tried the demo for Kinect Joyride and Sonic free riders and so far the only disapointment was the Joyride because I can't seem to get it to track my pretend steering wheel properly!! the games are excellent, amazing fun to be had with friends, the controls are fluid and the graphics are a hundred times better than the Wii's. Now I'm not saying I don't like the Wii, in fact I'm planning to get Golden Eye, Epic Mickey and Sonic Colours very soon, but if you own a 360 the Kinect is a must buy

I honestly think that Microsoft should stick to what they do best and make hardcore gaming. Why would I buy a $150 Kinect, when I can buy a Nintendo Wii for $50 more. And the fact Nintendo got there first. Microsoft will not catch up with Dance Central alone. If developers can figure out the motion gaming with the hardcore gaming. I could be just wrong but so far Nintendo is already good at it when it comes to innovating.

The whole point of Kinect is to rival the Wii isn't it. So it will undoubtably share a similar catalogue of casual games in it's life. The idea of a button heavy hardcore game running on Kinect is going to be a challenge for any developer and I don't see many of them taking the risk. In my opinion it is going to be party, dance, sport and fitness games all the way. That's not a bad thing. But it isn't really enough for a gamer like myself and many others.
