Kinect has problems recognizing dark-skinned users?

[UPDATE] GameSpot testing suggests facial recognition features of motion-sensing camera system might not work properly for some gamers; Microsoft says lighting levels to blame.

Source: In testing the Kinect, two dark-skinned GameSpot employees had problems getting the system's facial recognition features to work.

What we heard: Part of Microsoft's $500 million marketing push for Kinect includes positioning it as an accessible entertainment device for all audiences. However, it may be more accessible to some than others.

While testing out the Kinect, two dark-skinned GameSpot employees experienced problems with the system's facial recognition abilities. The system recognized one employee inconsistently, while it was never able to properly identify the other despite repeated calibration attempts. However, Kinect had no problems identifying a third dark-skinned GameSpot employee, recognizing his face after a single calibration. Lighter-skinned employees were also consistently picked up on the first try.

Not all games make much use of Kinect's facial recognition features.
Not all games make much use of Kinect's facial recognition features.

It's important to note that the problems were only experienced with the system's facial recognition feature and don't prevent users from playing Kinect games. Skeletal tracking, a primary means of controlling games with Kinect, appeared to work the same for all GameSpot employees.

The system's inability to recognize a user only means that he or she would need to sign in manually and some games' features may not work properly as a result. For example, when a second player joins in to Kinect Adventures during the title's drop-in, drop-out multiplayer, the system can't bring up that player's proper in-game avatar automatically if it can't identify the new user first.

If Kinect does have some technical issues related to users' pigmentation, it wouldn't be a first for recognition technology. Last holiday season, users of Hewlett-Packard computers with built-in webcams reported problems with a face-tracking feature.

HP blamed the problem on the webcam's technology, "standard algorithms that measure the difference in intensity of contrast between the eyes and the upper cheek and nose." It said the system could have problems "seeing" that contrast if there is insufficient foreground lighting.

[UPDATE 11/4] GameSpot continued its testing of Kinect today with more users in different rooms and different clothing. At first, the two employees who originally would not be recognized by the camera were correctly identified on the first try. However, when one changed from a light blue shirt to a black shirt (but stayed in the same room with the same lighting), the camera again failed to recognize him after multiple calibration tests. It also failed to recognize another darker-skinned GameSpot employee after four calibration attempts.

Somehow, those issues may not completely undermine the camera's ability to use facial recognition features. Despite the Xbox 360's insistence that it could not recognize some of the GameSpot employees immediately after calibration, the system was able to recognize them and sign them in properly when they waved at the camera, regardless of their clothing.

The official story: "The goal of Kinect is to break down the barriers for everyone to play, and it will work with people of all shapes and ethnicities at launch."--A Microsoft representative, who added that Kinect owners having calibration or recognition problems can call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX.

[UPDATE 2]: After the additional testing, Microsoft provided further comment, saying, "Kinect works with people of all skin tones. And just like a camera, optimal lighting is best. Anyone experiencing issues with facial recognition should adjust their lighting settings, as instructed in the Kinect Tuner."

Bogus or not bogus: Not bogus that Kinect has problems identifying some users. Abstain on how widespread those problems are, or whether they're due to skin color at all. With the system launching tonight and Microsoft expecting to sell 5 million by year's end, it shouldn't be long before the scope and cause of such problems are identified.

Blown out of proportion - it is a camera!!! If you have bad lighting or limited contrast then it will not pick up on features as well as it could. Problems with both light and dark skin if lighting is not good. Consumer reports tested this feature and had issues with improper lighting with everybody. Also keep in mind that it is only the auto login to live feature that suffers from this not use of Kinect as an input device. Read the whole story PS trolls.

Ive just noticed something on my Xbox with the new Update. It seems they've made Xbox more wii-like. Notice how when you press the xbox button on the controller, a White menu pops up, and the sound effect it makes is almost identical, or very similar to something you'd hear on the Wii. It looks like M$ is not only trying to attract the Wii audience with Kinect, but theyre trying to retain them by making the Xbox more like the Wii, something the casuals are used to. Sorry Xbox loyalists, I think M$ will be focusing more attention to the new casuals coming into the Xbox arena than Xbox's core market. Next year isnt looking good for Xbox as far as core gamers go. Gears 3 is the only good game I can think of for Xbox next year. It will be interesting to see where M$ will go, and if they can focus on both the casuals and core gamers.

@wiifan001 May require a controller defeating the purpose of "controller free" Well said. Hence, its nothing more than a gimmick. Something for under the christmas tree this year, but unless any huge changes occur such as game lineup, then this product wont have lasting appeal. Looks like something you can get bored with quickly.

$150. Laggy. Awful software lineup launch. Racist. Will require you to stand certain times. Doesn't register as well as other color clothing. May require a controller defeating the purpose of "controller free" I give you Kinect :D

wow. you would think that gamespot would know that lighting is a huge factor with cameras. fail! but then again, a neat feature for the Kinect, to avoid problems with low light would to have aperture controls (or something more user friendly that automatically adjusts those parameters based on lighting situations) unless it already has something like this. i wouldnt know i dont have kinect yet. but w.e. just my photo/video nerdiness kicking in.

Watch as about a week later Kinect is magically fixed and Microsoft claims it wasn't a skin color problem but a random algorithm problem. Or GameSpot made a huge mistake and this will be deleted soon thus i am taking many photos. lol

Ok, will a moderator PLEASE close this thread? There are entirely too many racists comments (those dirty "i'm not a racist but..." kind of comments especially) on it and I would suggest that some users feel The Ban Hammer.

I will NEVER say to my xbox, "Xbox On!!!" Im sorry, but thats just brainwashing, even worse than advertising. But, Im sure M$ planned that one by design. Still, though, seems corny, but thats what I think of Kinect overall anyway. Its overpriced, crappy games, and its got too many technical problems as we can tell from the article. People say this is the future of gaming, lol, Never. I dont want to be gaming always standing up and using my body as a controller. I want to SIT down and relax. I dont want to be standing. moving around as if I were playing DDR, when Im actually trying to play a core game like Gears or something. Kinect is NOT a replacement for the controller, it is a PERIPHIAL!!!! Until Kinect, by itself, can do everything and more than a controller, then it will not replace the controller. But, as we all know, Kinect is FAR from that, just like the Eyetoy was.

I understand people making fun of it and everything but some people are way outta line. I mean, if you wanna joke about it, O.K, this is more a joke thread after all, but.. don't cross the line, some comments are either sad or plain stupid. Racism is a crime, so be careful with the jokes, please? (I know I sound like a super nanny or whatever...lol)

Sort of like the HP webcam thing a while back. I'm pale as can be, so hopefully it will recognize me with no hiccups. Not that big of a deal though, and I'm sure they will have an update eventually to fix the issue.
