Square Enix has announced and debuted a trailer for Just Cause Mobile during The Game Awards 2020, and it's a free-to-play spin-off that will bring multiplayer to the series for the first time. Players will be able to team up with friends in co-op or fight against them in competitive modes.

The game, which is coming to both iOS and Android, won't have you playing as series stalwart Rico. Instead, the campaign casts you as a member of the Firebrand program, taking down the Darkwater corporation across multiple open-world environments. Expect a lot of explosions and grappling hooks.

The competitive multiplayer mode is called "Triple Threat," and it sets three teams of 10 players against each other. It's a capture-the-base-style multiplayer experience where you'll need to secure bases across a map while taking out enemies. There will be a clan system for players who want to team up long-term, and you'll be able to pilot numerous vehicles in this mode, too.

While Just Cause games on PC have received unofficial multiplayer mods in the past, this is the first time a Just Cause game has had a multiplayer mode designed by the games' developer.

There are also four-player co-op missions, which will pit you against waves of enemies in Just Cause Mobile's take on a horde mode. Finally, there's Challenge Mode, which features Destruction, Wingsuit, and Race challenges for players to complete and earn high scores in.

If you haven't played a Just Cause game before and would like to give the latest one a shot, the PS4 version of Just Cause 4 is currently free on PlayStation Plus.
