Just Cause dev not making Superman game

Avalanche Studios founder denies that developer is working on title based on comic book hero.

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios is making a game based on a comic book franchise, but it's not Superman. Studio founder Christofer Sundberg revealed the news responding to a question from Superannuation on Twitter.

No Caption Provided

"Superman game? We do a lot of weird things but that's not one of them," Sundberg wrote.

Avalanche Studios announced last year that in addition to an open-world title with Square Enix, the developer was making two additional games: one based on a movie and another based on a comic book franchise.

Sundberg has released two teaser images from one of Avalanche's in-development projects, which could be unveiled at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo this summer.

The images bear a resemblance to the Just Cause franchise, though the company has yet to officially announce any of its upcoming projects.

I look at all of the good fun open world hero and antihero games and I see that if other developers can achieve that level of engaging and fun game play then it is totally possible to create an awesome superman game. Man when I look at Batman Arkham Asylum and the much bigger Batman Arkham City. I know somebody out there can do a Superman game just right. The Superman Return game serves as a template for further development because the flight gameplay has already been solved by one developer "EA Tiburon." All that's needed is for a talented and experienced game developer to pick up where "EA Tiburon" left off. Yes Superman is almost invincible. However just like in the comics or cartoons, the only thing that can harm Superman or give Superman a difficult time are *(Super Powered Villains, Intelligent Villains, Kryptonite and Magic.) Divide the activities up into regular everyday missions and major missions. Use the regular missions of saving ordinary everyday people from a variety of accidents, dangers, robberies for fillers when in free mode. And use the major missions to drive the story along. Superman can be challenged with properly developed and arranged elements consisting of *The game items listed. There is so much good material in the Superman comics, goodness even in Superman Animated Series & Justice League TV Series. So much script material and ideas. Instead of just trying to reinvent the wheel or create a direct movie version of the game. I'm not saying it's easy. I'm just saying it's possible. (Sigh) However, finding the right developer for the job is extremely difficult it seems. Anyway, just a few small ideas among many.

The only company i feel that should make a Superman game is Rocksteady. if they can pull off a miracle and make the two best batman games ever released on consoles then they can surely pull off a miracle and make a good Superman game.

make a smallville game !!, in smallville his powers is not quite there yet so you can acquire a new power for completing a level or as the story goes on like the show, also in smallville kryptonite practically grows on trees everyone seems to have some so it would make sense for him to "lose health" when dealing with enemies, whereas superman the game it wouldn't make sense for him to lose health especially when kryptonite seems pretty rare in the movies. and if they do make a smallville game make the "power bar or mana bar" whatever you want to call it, make it refill itself, it would be retarded for clark/superman to walk around the city looking for "power bottles or mana bottles" so that he can fly and use his eye lasers and powers etc

@DWalker131 No thanks ... Making a Smallville game would alienate a whole bunch of fans who love the Superman comic but were too old to enjoy the teenage angst and monsters-of-the-week that show relied on.

However, I DO think it would be a good idea to have his powers developing through the game - from the long-jumping champion of the oppressed Siegel and Shuster originally came up with (and Grant Morrison revived in Action Comics last year), through John Byrne's young Superman who can only fly supersonic and got beaten down by Doomsday, to the fully mature, invincible, lightspeed, full-strength Superman who can only really be challenged by truly cosmic threats - like, say, Darkseid.

That covers a bunch of different levels of challenge and a bunch of potential alternate costumes ... I would love to see that.

I wouldn't trust the "Just Cause" devs to make a decent Superman game. Superman games would have to be treated very delicately due to most of them sucking in the past.

I would love to see a superman game that didn't suck, so far every time they've tried it has been a disaster. Guess the man of steel is a little too powerful for meager video games.

No one seems to able to make being Superman in a video game fun. Superman Returns wasn't really a bad game, it just wasn't fun. I guess its worth mentioning that the film was basically the same; great effects, just not interesting in the slightest. Hopefully Man of Steel will get things back on track.

@OHGFawx Very true. It wasn't fun because there wasn't much to do but fly around. The flight ability is the only fun thing I truly enjoy about that game. Every now and then I play it just to fly around because they did such a great job at simulating Superman's flight. Everything else is boring.

Can we have an article about how Activision isn't working on a Terminator game? Or how Capcom isn't working on a Magic School Bus game? These things are important! People need to know what people aren't doing!

the only Superman game i played is Superman return by EA Tiburon on my PS2 and oh my gosh that game is awful, the only thing that's good about that game is fly as high as i can and then fly down with incredible speed into the center of Metropolis. The sense of speed and looking at the city slowly getting closer and more detail are amazing. Realizing that, making me think that Superman game is not a bad idea, you can actually make it good. If game developer could not make it as a gritty, story-oriented game like Batman Arkham series, they should making it ridiculously epic with giant enemies, brutal melee combat, crazy flying sequences, and creative, physics-defying set pieces...damn, PLATINUM Games should be the one making it!

No video game developer would even try to develop a Superman video game, since it is an impossible franchise along with E.T. to turn into a good video game adaptation.

Yeah, but Lego Batman 2 was not a Superman video game, since there were other heroes you could play as and the story did not involve with Superman as the only protagonist.

Considering Superman is almost invincible, I think any game would have to rely on mission pass/fail conditions rather than things like a health bar. It would look a bit silly if you let go of your controller and watched superman be defeated by a henchman.

@hadlee73 Yeah the concept would have Superman failing to protect and help people in missions. He could be hurt though, by adding in kryptonite, maybe a boss fight where he loses his powers to kryptonite and has to fight with a health bar... lol

If I was to make a Superman game he would have to breath and eat. He would be like a reverse vampire, he has to stay in the sun light or his powers get weaker. He would have 2 kids twins a boy and girl with Wonder Woman. They just got super powers at 13 and they are just small super villains or super heroes it depends on there mood that day. If he punishes them to harshly it will turn Wonder Woman into his enemy. Oh and Wonder Woman was a super villain who he beat up so badly that she got amnesia and he was just keeping his enemy close. There people out there who know who she was and you have to keep them away from her. He can see everyone naked and all there germs MRSA, bloody pads and he is weird clean freak around his family. Who would want to play this shit game.

Are you sure the galaxy destroying feat wasn't in the silver age comics? Because it sure sounds like it.

Anyway I'm not wrong I could make a working concept for a game. It wouldn't be all boss fights.

Just because you can't see it doesn't mean others can't.

And even if he is as ridiculously powerful in the comics as he was during the silver age he doesn't have to be that way in the game.

They always change characters for games anyway.

Just look at Marvel Vs Capcom. Hulk should pwn most of those heroes with no effort if it was like the comicbooks.

No I'm sorry but you are wrong, wrong, wrong.

It's not hard to make proper game even with an overpowered hero. It's just that nobody made a serious attempt. It was all cheap cash in deals using a famous brand.

Actually he IS in one game atm. He's in Lego Batman 2 as a playable character and he can't do everything. Enemies use kryptonite and you have to switch to another character to win.

As for heroes being undefeatable in the comic books. FKN Captain America. He wins all the fights even though he shouldn't. He has plot armor like nobody else.

@Saketume @JayQproductions Wrong, Wrong, Wrong.

Superman has become all the more stronger in the comics. He could destroy a galaxy. HE BECAME A GOD. A FUCKING GOD.

Also, the weaknesses simply don't matter because at the end it's either gonna be Boss battles all the way through, or Superman is simply undefeatable.

Not saying a Superman game can't work, but whatever idea you had in mind, you're not in the right direction.

@JayQproductions

I'm sure I could design a decent game around the character. Not program one or do the art but the story and the gameplay ideas.

He's not as powerful as he used to be (silver age supes is a joke really) and he does have some powerful and clever enemies. Brainiac, Darkseid, Lex.

Actually here's a list. There are quite a lot of dangers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Superman_enemies

Superman is weak to kryptonie as everyone knows but he has other weaknesses such as mind control, lack of sunlight, magic or magical items, supernatural enemies such as werewolves and vampires etc.

Then of course his biggest weakness. His compassion for others.

That he is cheesy doesn't matter. There are large fan groups out there. I'm more of a Marvel Comics guy myself though.
