Just A Few Months After Launch, Disintegration's Multiplayer Is Already Shutting Down

The shooter from Halo creator Marcus Lehto didn't build a big enough playerbase.

Disintegration, the sci-fi shooter from Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, is losing all its multiplayer modes over the next few months. Developer V1 Interactive said the game didn't build enough of a player base in order to sustain online multiplayer.

"We stand by the creative risks taken to launch such a unique, genre-bending game created by this small but talented and passionate team," a post on the studio's official site read. "While our player base showed interest in the single player campaign, the game unfortunately struggled to build a significant audience necessary for a compelling multiplayer experience. After weighing options, we have collectively made the decision to sunset the multiplayer support."

The studio has already removed the in-game store where players could purchase cosmetics. The other multiplayer modes will be removed "in phases" up until November 17.

Disintegration launched earlier this year on June 15 to mixed reviews from critics. Several said that it tried to do too much by combining real-time strategy mechanics with third-person shooter gameplay. Others, like GameSpot's own Mike Epstein, enjoyed the fusion of genres.

"When Disintegration works, it really works. You're shooting guns, you're calling advances and retreats, ordering missile strikes. You really get the sense that you're in the thick of it, the heart of a battle," said Epstein in his Disintegration review. "Both the excitement and stress it induces are testaments to how thoroughly the gameplay draws you in. There are elements around the periphery of the experience that could have been better tuned, but they do not detract from what makes it work."

""The studio has already removed the in-game store where players could purchase cosmetics.""

the perfect -PERFECT- example why microtransactions in games are bad

will those customers get a refund for losing access what they paid for?

I had never even heard of it until this article, and I know I'm not alone.

And this is why developers should always include an offline single-player mode and not just rely solely on online multiplayer...at least the people who bought this can still play it when the servers go down, unlike what would happen to people that bought the Destiny or Division games if they didn't have enough people playing.

They should have made this more arcade like & faster paced action. Enemies are so small & it is irritating when you have small enemies on most games (SHMUPS, Top-down shooters, StarFox clones...etc). Duck & cover would take away from the action & make it more boring, so best to make it arcade & with tons of LARGER enemies and enough fire power. Make us feel like we are the ultimate bad azz so that we can reek havoc through crowds of enemies.

I am excited about Shadow Warrior 3 & Serious Sam 4 as they have the arcade & action formula with enough weaponry to make you feel like Rambo & I wish more devs would take heed to this. You will see the high ratings of these two games & how people miss this style of play. I am sick of open world boring games & sims, I want action & fun arcade!

Except it wasn't by any means unique. Strategic shooters have existed for years now. Changing the camera angles or tweaking a few mechanics doesn't suddenly make it unique, it makes it derivative. This game was doomed from the start.

Sadly it was poop. A flawed idea that just isn't that fun to play and no-one really wants a MP mode where you can barely even see who you're shooting 95% of the time. It's just fundamentally unsatisfying.
