Joker Smashes Box Office Records

No joking around, as Joker beats out Venom's previous record.

While it's not surprising when a new DC movie does huge business at the box office, the success of Warner Bros.' Joker this weekend was still impressive. It's the first of the studio's recent movies to carry an R rating, and while the Joker is an iconic comic book character, this was a Batman-free movie with a very different tone to DC's other films. Nevertheless, strong reviews and huge pre-release buzz helped the film smash the record for an October release in the US. [Update: It turns out Joker's performance was even stronger than initially believed, with Variety reporting the movie actually generated $96 million in North America during its opening weekend.]

Joker made an estimated $93.5 million in its first three days, which beats the previous record-holder, last year's Venom. As Box Office Mojo states, this puts Joker very close to the $93.8 million earned by Justice League in November 2017. The result is particularly impressive given Joker had a smaller production budget than many recent comic book movies; an estimated $55 million compared to Venom's $100 million and Justice League's enormous $300 million. Joker is also the fourth largest opening ever for an R-rated movie, and worldwide, the movie made more than $234 million so far.

Not surprisingly, Joker's huge success crushed all other competition this weekend. Last week's No. 1, the animated feature Abominable, dropped to second place, making an estimated $12 million, while Downton Abbey, Hustlers, It: Chapter 2, and Ad Astra also fell one place each. The acclaimed Judy Garland biopic Judy held its place at No.7 by expanding across 1,458 screens to make an additional $4.44 million.

The only other new entry in the box office Top 10 was the action thriller War, which was a huge success in its native India and made $1.5 million on 315 screens on its US debut. As for next week, it's possible that Joker will retain its position at the top of the chart, but will face competition from the Will Smith sci-fi thriller Gemini Man and the new animated version of The Addams Family.

Top 10 Films in the US for the weekend of October 4 -September 6 (via Box Office Mojo):

  1. Joker $93,500,000
  2. Abominable $12,000,000
  3. Downton $8,000,000
  4. Hustlers $6,300,000
  5. It: Chapter Two $5,355,000
  6. Ad Astra $4,557,000
  7. Judy $4,445,635
  8. Rambo: Last Blood $3,550,000
  9. War $1,581,000
  10. Good Boys $900,000

Pedophiles litter Hollywood but make a movie the left doesn't like and suddenly they start pointing it out.

@esqueejy: bottom line: the dark knight never inspired violence. the aurora shooting had nothing to do with the film, or the joker, other then the fact the psycho who shot up the place, knew the film was on, and the theatre was packed.

the woke are morons, that jerk from fake news to fake news, to fake news.

@dynamotnt: Literally almost nobody thinks any of those things.and you're programmed to overgeneralize in those terms by conservative propaganda. It's easy to tell because you all regurgitate the exact same verbiage over and over and over again like trained seals doing backflips for fish.

Dude shot up Aurora because he was mentally ill and we make it exceedingly easy for any unfit maniac to get his hands on weapons that make mass murder exceedingly easy. In fact, some of the very first legislation the GOP and Trump passed in 2017 after he wore in made it far easier for the mentally ill to get guns.

Moreover, it's the NRA and its GOP puppets who yammer about video games and movies causing violence and mass murders....anything to distract from the gun problem. ANYTHING.

@esqueejy: thats the thing, I can't stand the conservative rambling, and I completely agree about the gun laws, im just annoyed with things being targetted with constant censorship attempts.

constantly looking for someone to blame for everything, when in fact the evidence is right there, most of us must have seen the videos on youtube of a kid being refused scratch cards, then taking 80 dollars cash over the road and buying a bolt action without supervision, or anything, no wait time, just sure here you go, like he was buying a pack of sweets.

im not discrediting what you say about trump making it easier for the mentally ill to acquire guns, but I personally don't understand that situation so can't really comment. but does he feel they would need to defend themselves against hallucinations, whats his reasons?

@dynamotnt: His reasons are millions of dollars poured through his Super PACs by the NRA and defense contractors while they similarly spend millions on getting other GOPers elected.

Mass shootings and gun violence are what they and the NRA want. It causes fear and anger and causes people to feel unsafe and buy more guns. It also affords them the opportunity to propagandize in response to the predictable calls that we do something about the problem, which itself ALSO increases gun and ammo sales.

@edwardnygma: the joker is a great story demonstrating the cost of neo-liberal, libertarian policies that place cost-cutting ahead of the welfare of people on society's fringes.

Whilst it is a work of fiction, our prisons are filled with people who may have avoided their fate but with the slightest amount of attention.

In the end, we only hurt ourselves.

@thelmus3914: It was Reagan who deinstitutionalized the mentally ill and eviscerated their available services by attacking the sources of funding for their treatment, room and board (i.e., Medicare/Medicaid, etc.)...all in order to try to find money for his massive tax cuts that eventually caused him to have to raise taxes 11 times to fix the budget problems they caused.

Historical fact is a real REAL problem for you kkklowns.

@thelmus3914: since when do liberals cut social programs? That’s exclusively a conservative approach to cost saving. And that’s under the assumption that people cannot govern themselves and government is critical to the survival of society (which couldn’t be farther from the truth).

@KahnArtizt: He's been watching too much of the alt-right nonsense on YouTube and thinks up is down. The only thing the "conservatives" have left to them is doublethink propaganda.

Meanwhile, the GOP and Trump enacted massive tax cuts that did nearly nothing for the economy and were used for stock buybacks to enrich the already uber-wealthy, thereby blowing up the deficit that Obama had reduced by 2/3, and then turned around and began pointing at that deficit as the reason we should cut Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, food stamps and a host of other programs made necessary by the plutocratic kleptocracy they've turned the country into.

@edwardnygma: There are precisely zero instances of "liberal media" thinking it would happen. Merely reporting on what some silly people are saying does not indicate agreement (nor truth). You'd do well to remember that while you sponge up Faux News and World Net Daily state media propaganda.

I always buy an extra seat so no one can sit next to me, and I only go to a theater with reserved seating. I wonder how many people do the same?

@walbo: You usually don't have to worry about that with assigned seating since they're also usually stadium-style seating as well. Plus, the place I go to has motorized reclining leather chairs with plenty of room to walk past people even when they're reclined.

@deviltaz35: That's usually my view about everything in life, but once or twice a year I splurge. Some people choose to buy brand new cars. Some people choose to move to California. I choose to blow an extra $30 - $50 a year on a movie theater. I treat video games pretty much the same way. Bought two games on day 1 this year, and I'm out. All my other game purchases are either on extreme sales or used.

@KahnArtizt: Yep, and many, many people spend 120% of what they actually make. I'm cool with that, as long as I don't have to pay for them.

@MADPADDY: Meh. An extra $15 isn't that much to make sure I don't sit next to some greasy stank land whale spilling popcorn and soda all over me for two hours. Since I only go to the movies once or twice a year, that's not even half the cost of a new game.

@jsprunk: Hehe...what about the other side? You leave your wife to sit next to some greasy stank land whale? LOL

I just wait a bit so the theater isn't packed and noisy anyway. Plus, you can go to those nice theaters with the cushy setups...some even do the dinner thing (and bring you your beer!). Dinner and movie and a buzz...three birds with one stone...and a better use of your extra cash than a coat seat.
