John Wick First-Person Shooter VR Game Coming From Payday Developer

FPS based on the Keanu Reeves film franchise will launch in 2016.

Film studio Lionsgate has announced a partnership with Payday publisher Starbreeze for a virtual reality game based on the Keanu Reeves movie John Wick. The game, a first-person shooter, will be based on the world and characters from the action movie, though no footage has been released so far.

The full game is coming to "most existing VR headsets" in spring 2016, but you'll be able to play a version of it on the HTC Vive headset (developed in partnership with Valve) during the HTC Vive US and European tour later this year. A "teaser" version of the game will launch for HTC Vive later this year.

"John Wick is the perfect cross-platform property to extend into the fast-growing gaming world, and we believe that a cutting edge VR game will deepen fan engagement and accelerate John Wick's evolution into one of our next big action franchises," Lionsgate executive Peter Levin said in a statement.

The John Wick VR game will be developed by WEVR and mobile and VR studio Grab, with Starbreeze acting as its publisher.

In addition, Starbreeze's partnership with Lionsgate extends to the Payday series. The heist-themed crime game series already has some John Wick crossover content, but even more is coming, Starbreeze said. This is being done to facilitate "cross-promotion and integration of the two games."

The first John Wick hit theaters last year, while a sequel is due to arrive next September.

We tried the HTC Vive demo at Gamescom this week and it blew us away. Check it out below.

I dont get all the praise for John Wick. Everyone hyped it up, then I saw it and was disappointed. Its just a generic action movie. I was expecting more. I will say the shootout in his house was pretty cool.

John Wick was amazing and I'm so glad it's getting a sequel. I told myself that it would make a great game, too.

But VR? Why bring that nonsense into it?

John Wick is a good movie. Period.

When can we get a F.E.A.R. VR game?

Avatar image for Mogan

@Michformer: So long as it's playable on the Gear VR.

The Equalizer was so much better than John Wick. John Wick was like characters straight out of a cartoon.

I enjoy John Wick [enjoy Keanu Reeve performance] movie but this doesn't need a game.

another bad shooter coming right up!

this is going to be another cloned shooter with nothing special

No. Third person and no VR would make more sense.

Something along the lines of Max Payne, or John Woo's Stranglehold.

Well this movie was sweet but I don't think you can do John Wick justice in a First Person view... we'll see I suppose!

John Wick was a great movie. Nuff said.

@bruta: On what planet?

Go watch your Adam Sandler films.

@DrunkenPunk800: +1

What's up with these stupid first person shooters, I HATE FIRST PERSON VIEW!! So, glad fallout 4 has third person view, and that there are good third person games out there like metal gear solid, uncharted/the last of us, ghost recon etc.

@kaalkurayami: Yeah I kinda don't like FPS either. I have played some great ones (GoldenEye, Borderlands 2, Bad Company 2) but I prefer third-person games, which are now few in numbers.

Starbreeze sure is busy. Cool idea though. John Wick is ripe for a video game adaptation. They did a killer job with Riddick and Payday 2 has been excellent, so I'm sure they'll do great job with this one. I just hope there is also some form of hand to hand combat. John Wick had excellent martial arts action in it, and to not have that in the gameplay for this game would be missing an opportunity.

It bewilders me why people loves John Wick. That movie was dumb.

Avatar image for nl_skipper

@saturatedbutter: I think it has to do with most people having the ability to enjoy a movie for some simple fun... which John Wick has in spades, sorry you couldn't appreciate it, but hey, not every movie is for everyone!

Avatar image for saturatedbutter

@nl_skipper: I didn't find it fun at all.

Avatar image for starjay009

@saturatedbutter: Just cause you didn't find fun in it doesn't give you the right to question why everyone else did. I don't need to go on any more.

Avatar image for Mogan

@saturatedbutter: If you enjoy action/shoot 'em ups it was pretty solid. The action was good, the plot didn't try to be complex or make you think, and the portrayal of this secret criminal high society was kinda cool.

No Fury Road, but better than the other Taken sequels/knock offs from the last few years.

Avatar image for saturatedbutter

@Mogan:The plot was terrible. The action was mindless and boring.

Avatar image for Mogan

@saturatedbutter: Meh. Different strokes.

Avatar image for wookiegr

@saturatedbutter: Some people live their entire lives thinking crappy things are great all while never understanding why actual great things are well received by the masses.

Avatar image for saturatedbutter

@wookiegr: There was nothing "actually" great about John Wick.

Avatar image for starjay009

@saturatedbutter: Opinionated bullsh*t of a comment. Seriously my dear....

Just saw the movie a week damn movie I watched the whole year.

Avatar image for Pyrosa

That movie was a delightful surprise. I went in with zero expectations, and ended up enjoying the Hell out of it.

Avatar image for muzza93

John Wick is so damn good

Avatar image for marcos_d2

I'd like to watch the video.

Why yesterday on another post you changed the player to Youtube, it worked, but minutes after you changed back to this player that ONCE in 20 times works?

Avatar image for Pyrosa

@marcos_d2: I gave up on linked media on GS years ago. I just block everything now, and if I want to see a clip I find in on Youtube or the publisher's site.
