Jim Carrey To Play Sonic Movie's Dr. Eggman - Report

"Silence! I am Dr. Robotnik, the greatest scientific genius in the world!"

Deadline just broke the news that Jim Carrey is negotiating to join the cast of the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film as the movie's villain, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. He'd be starring in the film alongside Westworld's James Marsden and Ride Along's Tika Sumpter.

Carrey last starred as Tadek in the 2016 detective drama Dark Crimes and the 2017 documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond. He'll be both executive producing and starring in this year's Kidding, which premieres on Showtime. The actor is well known for the crazed zeal he can bring to a performance, which could make for a very interesting Dr. Robotnik.

Dr. Robotnik has been Sonic's arch-nemesis since the blue blur's first video game in 1991. Possessing an IQ of 300, the mad scientist used his vast intellect to transform forest creatures into killer robots so he could conquer the world and claim the powerful Chaos Emeralds for himself. Over the years, Dr. Robotnik's plans have become more comical, and the villain received the goofy nickname "Dr. Eggman" in reference to his round body and being an egghead.

There aren't that many details concerning the plot of the Sonic the Hedgehog film. The movie seems to follow the same gist of the games: Robotnik is doing something dastardly to take over the world and Sonic needs to stop him. However, there are a few interesting twists this time around. An interview by The Wrap with film producer Neal Moritz revealed the movie will follow the buddy cop format, where Sonic, a juvenile delinquent in need of a friend, teams up with a small town cop to stop Eggman. We'll probably get more details closer to the film's scheduled 2019 release. The movie is being marketed as a mixture of live action and CGI.

Love Jim Carrey, but I have to admit this strikes me as a crazy questionable career move.

Jim Carrey is such a horrible person in real life, I can't stand to watch anything with him in it anymore.

@Atzenkiller: He could be left as-is and CG'd in. Think movies like Space Jam or Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

@mcnichoj: Then why would they not do the same with Eggman? And the movies you mentioned are really old. Back then it was a novel thing. Now you won't find a movie that doesn't have any cg effects.

@mcnichoj: Based on the fact that Mario Bros. sucked, both Tomb Raider's and the recent one sucked, Need for Speed sucked then "Yes", but what really broke my heart was Assassin's Creed which I had so much faith in when I bought tickets at its release. Only one movie that wasn't so bad was Prince of Persia, but I was annoyed they had whitewashed it.

@urbanman2004: I generally expect them all to suck, but I admit that I had high hopes for WOW, even though I had quit back in Burning Crusade. The lore is good and it had potential, but alas...another giant brain fart.

@hmoobpaladin: I beg to differ. For the better part of the movie Jesse Pinkman looked out of place regarding his role, and yeah I said Jesse Pinkman, lol. That movie was meh at best. Ace Attorney doesn't count because it wasn't released in the West.

Love Jim Carrey... but this sounds like another huge video game turned live action flop-o-rama. Time will tell but right now it’s a pass for me. Maybe Netflix will pick it up lol

@mcnichoj: hey now, we’re each entitled to our own speculation and opinion. Given 99% of video game turned live action movies are terrible or so-so at best. So my speculation is remembering back to the MARIO brothers movie. Terrible. Sonic being another well known icon into live action? Most likely another terrible tear into space and time in the video game turned movie universe. This is all speculation as no one knows anything really but two movies that had a chance to excel IMO were tomb raider and assassins creed, and they both sucked! And those were already close enough to live action let alone bringing in a blue hedgehog, fat guy on a red hover ball and the rest of the gang into live action? Terrible idea.

Who is the audience for this? Do kids give a f**k about Sonic? I don't think so (could be wrong).
Do I as a 30 year old who played master system and mega drive care? Not really... Sonic Mania was a great nostalgia.. But that's it...
Who will watch this?

@rtehrani: Sega in the west thought his name was silly. Name changes are just one part of the marketing localization process.

@rtehrani: Eggman is the character's original Japanese game. They first started calling him Eggman overseas in Sonic Adventure in 1999.

JIm Carey as Dr. Robotnik (I refuse to call him Eggman)? Guess I won't be watching this movie then (like I wanted to in the first place).

There is a...live action...version coming? Seriously? Who thought this would be a good idea?

Sonic stuff hasn't been good since the very first cartoon.
