Now Playing: Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Delayed As Sonic Gets A Redesign - GS Universe News Update

The past few months for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie have been a trying one for everyone involved in the film. Now, Jim Carrey--who plays antagonist Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the upcoming 2020 film--has given his take on all of this.

During the Television Critics Association presentation for Carrey's Showtime series Kidding, the actor opened up for the first time about the controversy.

He discussed fans loving these characters since they were children and claiming ownership of them. "I don't know quite how I feel about the audience being in on the creation of it. We'll see what that entails because sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something and then when it gets it, 'I just wanted it, I didn't care about it. I just jumped on the bandwagon,'" Carrey explained. "Ownership of anything is going out the window for all of us."

The first trailer was released in May, and after fan backlash about the titular character's look, director Jeff Fowler announced the character would be getting redesigned, which ended up pushing back the movie to a 2020 release. This has been the first time that a major studio has given in to fan backlash after the release of a trailer.

Sonic the Hedgehog is voiced by Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) and features Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. James Marsden (Westworld) plays a state trooper who catches onto Sonic's super speed. Obviously, both Marsden's character and Sonic are trying to stop the evil Robotnik. Sonic's new release date is February 14, 2020.

It really doesn't matter in this era as long as we get a film. It doesn't need to be a good film, but they need to use it if they are going to make any movies with CGI in this day and age. It's not like the past, where you need to look everywhere for the right thing.

I was gonna watch it ironically if they kept the original design of Sonic, but not only am I gonna watch it ironically and laugh, I wanna watch it to support the director for being surprisingly chill, restrained, and understanding when he responded saying that the design will be changed before the film comes out. The fact he didn't lash out or act like a petulant child towards fans or just moviegoers in general is genuinely refreshing in this day and age where it seems to be a HUGE trend for Hollywood companies, directors, writers, actors etc to lash out and attack the consumers.

I mean, isn't that the ENTIRE point or one of the main points of a movie: To make money? Do these companies, directors, writers, and actors hate money? Doesn't make sense.

Jim only needs to point out that changing Sonic's appearance won't fix the almost certainly godawful writing, acting, comedy, stunts, special effects and music.

ha everyone's a critic, I like jim and his 1st series "kidding" was brilliant!

It may not be a great movie but with his enthusiasm and energy it may distract viewers and the whiners (oh sorry, critics) away from the awfulness this may be, he looks nothing like robotnic or egg man however.......

Masters of the universe did the same, with Dolph just seeming weird in it, mario film was hardly recognisable from the game (rip bob hoskins, another great), but non the less still we watched them and i for one quite enjoyed the parody of them and dennis hopper as the bad guy just worked (along with the reptile things)

PIxels was bad though

He's got a damn good point, people who care the least make the loudest noise. I was making fun of Sonic Boom designs with the rest of people back in the day. Do I give a shit if the TV show is good and that opinion has turned around on the designs? Hell no, only Sonic property I've touched since the 90's is Mania.

WGAS? I mean seriously in this day and age EVERYTHING has a controversy. People just feel empowered to ridicule and destroy with community bullying and social media blackmail. If you don't like it....don't go see it! Ruining it for people who do is what your really after. Jim Carey is just wanting a paycheck and I'm sure he needs one.

@EricDWright: Jim is still spending money from ace ventuer part 2. I think he'll be fine on money. He was one of the first to command 20 million per movie. He did that on quite a few films before his career fizzled out blockbuster wise.

He’s right, half the people complaining were never going to watch it in the first place. Snakes on a Plane taught us that people get off on bossing Hollywood around but then have no intention of going to the movie. Hollywood should have left sonic as is, normal moviegoers didn’t care how he looked.

@thomaswmak: So a loud minority that wasn't going to see the movie anyway was somehow going to effect the box office? Transformers did just fine with all the complaints. So did the first CGI turtle movie that bay produced. Movies are seen by normal folk.

@Bread_or_Decide: yes i understand that part. What I was saying was that Transformers and TMNT have already established a presence at the box office with previous titles. Sonic is a new entry and it's based on video games, unlike Transformers and TMNT. Video games movies have a record of poor showing at the box office and Sonic is comparable to Mario which also had a poor movie.

To be fair, the design was very awful and the majority of the responses were quite savage. The design was pretty much their way of announcing the intention to set the record for the worst video game adaptation.

To be frank, the design was so bad, the thought of them having a brain and taking a step back never crossed my mind.

I'm actually impressed, I plan on seeing it.

Is it possible they released an intentionally bad trailer so they could go back later and "fix" it? If the movie wasn't close to being done it's an easy way to get promotion and test the waters...

@Mogan: Jim is a smart guy. He knows what is going on and what is really behind this whole situation. Online bullies who have no real vested interest in the final product. “Internet” approved products often fail hard. Detective Pikachu had a new take on pokemon design and is now the highest grossing videogame movie.

Should this guy still be making movies when he has a history of making fun of transgendered individuals? Maybe they should Jim Carrey from the movie. First he told us what to do with our bodies. Now he's telling us what to do with our minds.

Cancel the transphobe and get somebody better as Robotnik.

@EricDWright:

Cute. Everybody knows that Jim Carrey is a fairly controversial figure who has often put his nose in other people's business his entire life. Fairly certain people's gender identity isn't one of those things you get to make fun of in today's age. No worries though, he'll get cancelled someday when his blatant transphobia, misogyny, homophobia and racism (oh, you didn't know he was those things too?) in some drunken rant and TMZ blasts it into the stratosphere before the Twitter stans tear into him and every single person drops their contract with him.

But sure, keep defending terrible individuals that enjoy driving people into suicide. It's a good look especially when you shave your head bald, I swear.

Well, considering protesting is a cottage industry now, any creative IP is going to be railed by someone or some digital mob at some point.

Now, in the case of the Sonic movie, it would probably have been wise for them to test some of that with a control group (Sonic fans, gamers, etc.) before they opened themselves up for the onslaught. I mean, a lot of people worked really hard on what we saw, so I hate to just blast them, but it makes me think someone with the money made the call on what they showed. Out of the multitude of people working on this, there had to be some voices that said, 'wait a second...'.

@lionheartssj1: yeah, even if my reaction was the same as anyone elses, its still amazing how every random person feels like theyre entitled to decide what sonic movie should be. death threats and even the lighter stuff. that kind of reacting leads to south parks grey overall xmas party

super mario movie is one of the shittiest movies ever made. but its also one of the most remarkable. historically its lot more important than jurassic world or terminator salvation or some random below average but not funny-bad romantic comedy

It is not hard to see that Sonic is a hedgehog, not a humanoid. That is obvious. I do think that after the responses that have been said, I think they'll make Sonic kinda like what Disney did to the lions in the Lion King remake, it'll be pretty realistic. A realistic hedgehog is better than a realistic humanoid.

Except that Sonic should still have some semblance of what he normally looks like. The original movie character looks nothing like how Sonic normally looks.

The fans didn't take over the design, they just wanted Sonic to look like Sonic. He has looked basically the same since his incarnation. What did the animators think would happen when they took too much creative license?

@Sepewrath: Honestly, I would think quite a few of them. Though since Sonic has been around for so long, many of these people are going to be bringing their kids to see Sonic. Those fans just want to see a character they remember growing up and to share that character with their kids.

When characters stick around for a long time, they become part of popular culture and become somewhat iconic. You can show a picture of classic Sonic to anyone and almost everyone will know the character. The changes to Sonic would be no different than if Nintendo took Mario and made him younger and changed his clothes to look like a hipster. No matter how Nintendo sells it, people would refuse to accept the new style. Mario is very established, just like Sonic.

To another point, the studio changing the design and delaying the movie would not be seen as a failure in any way. This controversary gives them metrics into how popular the movie can be and how many people may be interested. By catering to the audience, they may have made the movie even more known and popular without having to spend much on advertising. I wouldn't even be suprised if this was done on purpose to create a viral stream and then say they are changing Sonic back to appease the fans, while always having that plan in mind.

Unfortunately, Jim Carrey completely lost his mind a few years back and has never recovered... man is only a shell of what he once was. He has gone full conspiracy theory and illiuminati is taking over the world. His words (in a nutshell.. perhaps not verbatim) "Nothing exists, we aren't even here. Nothing matters and everything is pointless." You can't take anything he says at face value... which is sad. At one point in time he truly was one of the best, and I still love a lot of his older movies. Problem is... he is very outspoken these days and acts as though he knows things that nobody else is intelligent enough to figure out.. like he thinks he ascended or something... He definitely drank the cool-aid and god knows what else.. I feel sorry for him, but perhaps there is still hope for him. Of course it's everyone else... don't ever take a look in the mirror and think "gee... maybe it's me."

Not sure what he’s trying to say here. When you make a movie and you name it Sonic the Hedgehog, you’re targeting a specific group of people, namely fans of Sonic the Hedgehog. You don’t get to take liberties with things like story and character design and expect NOT to get some kind of backlash from your target audience. I don’t know quite how I feel about producers exploiting fans of certain franchises and just making whatever. “Oh, you’re mad that Superman is being played by Peter Dinklage? BOO HOO Don’t be so ENTIDOLLLLLED!”

@Sepewrath: That is what he is saying, but he is only saying it to dismiss the people and their criticisms. He acts as if people who think their "vision" of Sonic sucks doesn't include plenty of actual fans of the source material that have and will purchase Sonic related things. Sure, the complaint blew up, but that's only because the Sonic design was so grotesque that it became a well circulated train-wreck.
