Japan game charts: May 22-28

New Super Mario Bros. jumps into the top slot of Media-Create's gaming charts, which is once again dominated by DS titles.

Surprise, surprise: The latest game-sales chart from industry-research firm Media-Create has a DS game coming out on top in Japan. Once again, titles for Nintendo's portable dominated the top 10 list during the week of May 22 to 28.

While the number-one game was a new entrant--New Super Mario Bros. for the DS--the rest of the list was mostly made up of returnees. Their ranks included a trifecta of brain-training games: Kahashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nou o Kitaeru Otona DS Training (second), Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (third), and Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training: Eigo Duke (eighth). They were joined by Tetris DS (fifth) and Animal Crossing: Wild World (ninth).

However, the week also saw a very rare sight--a PSP title cracking the Japanese top 10. The game in question was Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable, which features characters from the two titular Square Enix series. It is based on a popular board game released in Japan in late 2004 but features several new levels and characters not present in its inspiration.

The rest of the Media-Create bestsellers for the week of May 22 to 28 were all for a single platform--the PlayStation 2. The most popular was sixth-place finisher KimiKiss, the latest attempt to cash in on the Japanese dating-game craze. Right behind it was Konami's Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 in seventh, three slots ahead of baseball sim Jikkyou Powerful Major League.

That's some retarded logic there, pal. Games with crappy ratings? DON'T BUY THEM. Simple as that. And you're the not the only one who knows how to get free games, but without consumers to support the industry, game developers wouldn't have a paying job and continue to produce fine games. Brag about piracy if you'd like, but you're doing a disservice to the community and to yourself. Go burn in hell.

Sweendrix you know there is a way make PSP games load instantly right? I petty you have to "BUY" DS games. OH and also DS game's average review score is 7.4 compare to 7.6 of PSP because while DS has some really nice games it also has some Terrible TERRIble games like Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects DS

I don't see how anyone can comment that the DS has terrible games...I got rid of my SUPER SLOW LOADING psp...and traded it to get the DS...and I couldnt be happier. New Super Mario Brothers, Mario 64, Metroid, and Even Animal Crossing all have lasting appeal...not to mention that they load almost instantly. I'll take slightly reduced graphics and innovative gameplay in a portable over a battery hog and abysmal loading times any day of the week. After all...I only get about 15-20 minutes to play between classes...with the PSP...half of that time is spent turning it on and loading up. BOO!!!

I'm sure Nintendo would love for the release of the DS Lite to spark the same fervor in the US + European markets that it has in Japan. With more intriguing released like they might actually have a shot. Of course, that still won't change the fact that in America most of us gamers are graphics whores...

The DS lite will seriously improve Nintendo's handheld's selling force over in the UK and probably the US. I have one and it's a massive, massive improvement. Big up the Big N!

Imallvol7: wow, they like their handhelds, i dont see why anyone would pay for a handheld or a handheld game People spend hours on trains/buses everyday. Homes are small with one tv. A handheld is perfect in these situations + it's a good way to play with friends at school when you meet up elsewhere. But typical western thinking: Can't fathom the idea that things are different in other places.

Well there was an animal crossing exhibit that was mega popular in Japan if memory serves. Odds are both Japan and the UK got more stock in of the game. More DSs also meant more animal crossing for women post 20.

In the photos for the DS lite, you know the ones with the gigantic waiting lines, I didn't see anybody who looked like they were under 20. And if MP:Hunters has "crappy" graphics, then the PS3's graphics will look like Commodore 64 to you in 3 years, when you think you NEED a newer "more realistic" system. Remember, you were probably duped into playing games on a PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube, and we all know how "crappy" those games look now. I can't even play them, they all look so bad. GTA3 runs at like 10 fps, and drives like a tank in a pool of tar, and GTA4 will play the same, but with millions more polygons, thankfully! That'll make all the difference!

Nintendo seems to be unstoppable in Japan.... some of those games have been in the Top Ten list for almost a year. The Nintendo DS is also having great sales. I really hope that Nintendo can maintain the momentum until the Wii launches and offer more of that great software!!!

Rene23r is not the graphics that makes a great game , is the gameplay behind it and DS has a lot of quality titles , so it doesn't surprise me that the DS is dominating in Japan

And they won't be getting any more super mario bros until next week. They sold out half the shipment the first day. The DS doesn't have bad graphics, the games are real fun and innovative. Limited functionality? The play-yan player can convert dvds and other medias onto a SD card. You aren't being forced to rebuy your movies etc. They include the tool to do it as well. The internet browser adds more. Also the DS doubles as a guidebook to the Japanese, English Trainer, cook book. Also add in the Kanji handwriting improvement tool as well as dictionary you just draw in the symbols to look them up if memory serves. That is real usefull to the Japanese since their language has over 4000 symbols and only 400 are commonly used. The Japanese are crazy for the DS since it isn't forcing them to pay for those things out of the box.

Man, I still can't understand why the Japanese like the DS so much. It has bad graphics, weird (and usually bad) games (except mario of course), and has limited functionality, among many other things.

It would definetly be more valuable if gamespot listed the sales numbers instead of just the order. New Super Mario Bros. sold an insane 900,000 copies in Japan that week, which is 10x more than any other game that week

It never ceases to amaze how vastly different the US and Japanese gaming markets are. These lists also indicate that the Wii is going to drive PHENOMENAL sales in Japan, unless the insatiable thirst for gaming quirkiness over graphics is limited to Nintendo's handheld rather than its "new generation" console. I really do have a hard time seeing the Wii get beat out by anything (except possibly DS sales) given the current gaming trends in Japan. Outside of Japan, however, it's all a mystery. Personally, I think the Wii is already in high-demand even before pre-orders have begun, but that's only based on what I see via gaming journalism and message forums, which are primarily populated by true-blue gamers. The rest of the North American/European market, though? I don't think they really know about the new consoles well enough for a gamer like myself to make a solid judgement on their potential opinion. Once we see some Wii/PS3 commercials, though, more grounded commentary might be possible. Still, speculation is all the rage, and I can speculate with the best of them. Currently, the best bet is that the Wii's best chance in America is as the "second-choice" console, as it's hard to see how average parents and young adults can afford to buy both the 360 and the PS3; instead, the most likely outcome is they will feel the need to choose between the two. I don't give the Wii credit as a "primary system" choice because all one has to do is look at gaming sales; the top sellers (outside of NSMB) are well-established PS2 and 360 shooters and sports games, with the 360 continuing to sap away the life of the current-gen versions. The mindset of our mainstream game consumers would require a fairly major shift (or perhaps Nintendo's true desire, the emergence of an entirely new and untapped market of consumers) for the Wii to be viewed as "the number one" system to own over the competition. Whether or not the Western gaming public is ready to totally transform itself with a machine like the Wii is still up in the air. Then again, perhaps the real transformations lie in the physics and graphical engines capable with a machine like the PS3. Being a Wii-fan, I'd like to see the former, but objectively I realize it could be either.
