Japan game charts: July 31-August 6

PSP strategy title SD Gundam G Generation Portable grabs top spot; Star Fox Command misses top 10 in first week.

The Japanese gaming world was rocked this week with two monumental revelations: The best-selling game of the week was not for the Nintendo DS and Brain Age has finally left the top 10.

SD Gundam G Generation Portable for the PlayStation Portable, the latest game based on Bandai's Gundam anime franchise, was the best seller of the week, according to the latest data from Media Create. The top slot during the last several months typically has been claimed by a Nintendo DS game, with an occasional PlayStation 2 offering stealing a week on top here and there. Still, the anomaly will likely be brief. Five DS games remain in the top 10, with New Super Mario Bros. threatening at number two.

Another new game to the top 10, Jissen Pachi-Slot Hisshouhou! Hokuto no Ken SE, racked up high sales and came in at number three. Jissen Pachi-Slot is based on a Japanese slot machine, itself based on the Fist of the North Star manga series.

As well as those new titles sold, the performance of another new game was perhaps more notable for missing the top 10. Nintendo offered Japanese gamers a mix of action and strategy in Star Fox Command, but those who took the publisher up on that were only enough to make it the 14th best-selling game of the week. Meanwhile, Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day is showing signs of slowing down. The game has sold 4 million units worldwide--including 3 million in Japan--but this week it missed the top 10 cut, sliding to number 12.

Hooooly crap. There's a PSP game in the number 1 spot! In Japan! Stop the clock, we have a winner! Impressive, most impressive. Must be one heck of an appealing game to hit that deeply. It has dethroned NSMB! Can it last for more than a week, though? Will there be longevity in its appearance on the charts, or shall it be a fluke? Well, I don't know. I have no clue as to the quality of the game. But that it hit #1 at all is pretty darn good for a PSP game. Sadly, it's the ONLY PSP game on there. The rest of the chart is dominated -once again- by DS and PS2 games. A GBA game even managed to make its way onto the charts. Anyway, I am deeply interested in seeing if that Gundam game remains on the charts at all next week.

s0ldier69 lol. what a pathetic list of crap. WHy anyone cares what these people play is beyond me. Because the North American sales chart is much better. People care because if all you had were North AMerican game developers, your game list would be football, fps, and 12 gangsta games and GTA clones. But typical attitude of a child- if I don't like it, then it's crap.

Not surprising at all. High school boys love their PSP's over here. The DS is an outrageous success, but the PSP is far from being a failure. Now if only it could keeps up this pace with software releases all the time....

UNLIKE every week where the DS totally owns the psp in sales and the fanboys go like: "Japanese people have bad taste in games". Im gonna simply say that im happy to see portable gaming is getting the treat it deserves in Japan. Be it in a gba, a ds or a psp.
