Now Playing: James Gunn's Suicide Squad Movie Is A "Total Reboot," Not Called Suicide Squad 2 - GameSpot Universe News Update

More details have come to light about DC's upcoming Suicide Squad sequel from James Gunn. Producer Peter Safran told Joblo that the sequel is a "total reboot," so it shouldn't be referred to as Suicide Squad 2. The name the studio is using is The Suicide Squad, though whether or not this is the final name or a working title remains unconfirmed.

"First of all, we don't call it Suicide Squad 2 'cause it's a total reboot, so it's The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it," Safran said.

Gunn, the Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director who was recently re-instated for Vol. 3, will write and direct The Suicide Squad. Regarding the script, Safran said, "It's everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot."

The intriguing angle of this story is that, now that he's back making Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Gunn is directing movies for both DC and Marvel. Safran said he and Gunn agree that the Marvel vs. DC rivalry is "absurd," and everything is going to be just fine.

"You know what I love about James directing for both Marvel and DC is he has always espoused the view that that which unites comic book and superhero lovers is much greater than that which divides us," Safran said. "Because, there's always been this Marvel/DC rivalry, which he has said, and I agree, is absurd. There's room for everybody and certainly that which unites us all is far greater than that which divides us, so hopefully they'll see that you can be both a Marvel and a DC fan and the world won't spin off its axis."

It's not exactly what what the description "total reboot" means for The Suicide Squad 2. What we do know is that Idris Elba will play Deadshot in the sequel, taking over the role from Will Smith.

The 2016 Suicide Squad received mixed reviews, but it was a massive commercial success. It made more than $746 million worldwide, and it won an Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Suicide Squad comes to theatres in August 2021. A recent intriguing report says the film will add a number of characters from the DC Comics world, including Ratcatcher, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Peacemaker. There's not yet a date for when Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will release.

rebooting a bad movie to make another bad one. Nice

Avatar image for just1mohr

I mean can't they just call the movie Margot Robbie, since that is the only reason I will go back to see this flick.

Avatar image for OneStrong2

"I'M gonna hurt ya rea--". Yeah, let's forget that other movie ever happened.

Latest news:

Hollywood now reboots franchises before there is a sequel out..

Avatar image for DETfaninATL

Just keep Margot Robbie and re-do Killer Croc to look how he does in the Arkham video games, please & thank-you......

Avatar image for greaseman1985

lmao DC always has the dumbest character names.....Ratcatcher, King Shark, and Polka-Dot Man bahahahahahahaha

Avatar image for Pyrosa

If it has Will Smith or any other horrible miscast so-called "A-Listers," it's a non-starter.

Avatar image for Yams1980

Will Smith is Aladdins Genie in an upcoming movie. Lets all watch it and ruin our childhoods a bit more.

Avatar image for just1mohr

@Pyrosa: I have to admit he was irritating in that one & dragged the movie down.

Avatar image for Sindroid

@Pyrosa: Smith is replaced by Idris Elba

Avatar image for pappafost

They just need to make it where half the movie isn't walking down dark alleys. You have all of these superhero characters, and they're walking down an alley for 45 minutes, WHY?!?

Avatar image for streamline

@pappafost: because none of them can fly. :P

I get your point though.

Avatar image for csward

A reboot so soon? That's going to be confusing for audiences. Is it a whole new movie or a remaster they may ask.

Avatar image for thedarklinglord

Unless it's an entirely new cast, James Gunn writing/directing or not, I'm not even remotely interested. You can have the stink of that first movie anywhere near this thing.

Avatar image for DoctorTanaka

While you're at it, Hollywood, can we get a do-over for Last Jedi and Rogue One?

Avatar image for vl4d_l3nin

The studio is going to completely ruin it, just like they did with the last one. They had multiple editors do multiple cuts of the movie, then they just put together the stuff they liked

They will put box office projections before Gunn's vision, and edit this movie in a horrible way in order for it to be like what's popular.

Avatar image for Packer1080

They should call it Suicide Squad Pedo Lovers Revenge.

Avatar image for rolento25

Everyone excited for a pedo lover to make a movie... sad world we live in.

Avatar image for Yams1980

How do you know this? Is there a list of confirmed pedos we should have on hand to reference each time theres a news article?

Avatar image for Iemander

No stupid jokes please, let's keep the DC universe serious.

Avatar image for tony56723

@Iemander: Flash would like a word with you

Avatar image for cashx002

No more Leto too, thanks. Ugh. Like the dude, just not as the Joker. He was not convincing and used poor gags/method acting on set. Ledger had it right by isolating himself to be the best, not to convince others/hype that he was losing his mind.

Avatar image for just1mohr

@cashx002: It only revealed his desperation & it was pathetic.

Avatar image for cashx002

@just1mohr: Agreed haha! So gimmicky and schticky.. . Dude even tried sending a dead rat to one of his co-actors. LOOK AT ME, REAL METHOD ACTING HERRRRRE!! "When begging to be cool goes bad. .."

Avatar image for MajinSquall

So i guess the DCEU IS done and dusted then, shame because it had potential

wait will Wonder Woman 1984 be a reboot too?

Avatar image for sparent180

@MajinSquall: I dont know if it's necessarily done but it's no longer the focus, which is for the best. Instead of having to worry about making each movie connected to the rest they can just worry about doing one movie at a time. If they do decide to do a team up/Justice League movie they will already have their characters established.

Avatar image for MajinSquall

@sparent180: i suppose but then again does it really need to be a connected universe anyway?

and i wonder if this is why they shelved Superman for the time being

Avatar image for sparent180

@MajinSquall: That's the thing, I don't think there needs to be a connected universe, at least not to the extent of the MCU. It's one of the reasons Wonder Woman and Aquaman were so successful. Both movies were self contained stories that weren't concerned with establishing the bigger universe or setting up future "team-up" movies. The only reference I recall from either film was in Aquaman when someone recongizes him as one of the people that defeated Steppenwolf.

I don't see anything wrong with DC focusing on stand alone movies. It still leaves open the possibility for them to do bigger, "team-up" movies later if they eventually want to do another Justice league movie or a storyline involving multiple superheroes. But at least this way they can take it one movie at a time instead of worrying about the entire movie-verse. Imo that's were they went wrong to begin with. They were more concerned with getting the DC Universe on the big screen instead of making one good movie at a time.

I do think this is one of the reasons Superman is on hold. Give him a break, focus on other heroes, and then bring him back once they have a string of successful movies.

When they reboot a franchise this fast, when the first one was pretty good, it takes away all my interest in seeing it. Because they are just as likely to reboot it again, making it meaningless.

Avatar image for Sindroid

@s0ldier69: Was a mediocre film. Robbie was a good choice for Harley though, but played it annoyingly..

Avatar image for GarGx1

@s0ldier69: I enjoyed it as well, in fact I watched it again earlier this evening on Netflix.

Avatar image for sparent180

@s0ldier69: you thought Suicide Squad was pretty good? Respect your opinion but I thought that movie was dull as could be. It was like they tried to make the movie and characters "cool" and "edgy" but instead it was boring and uninteresting.

Avatar image for s0ldier69

@sparent180: I respect your opinion as well, thanks for being decent about it. I guess I just feel like they could have brought back the cast and improved upon what was, yes, an average (not great) movie, rather than blow it all up and start over.

Avatar image for mrbojangles25

Or, you know, could just not make another Suicide Squad movie and try something else. Also, too soon.

DC has so many great characters and stories. I just wish their live-action films matched the quality of their animated features.

Avatar image for mistertech

Finally watched Aquaman last night... not very motivated to watch DC films just because of the poor way it's been mismanaged, but it was great... had some typical weak cgi moments but luckily because it was under water for much of the film it was covered... however I find DCs new focus on standalone films... and not worrying about a connected universe troublesome... Rather has already been in justice league..... but now all this reboot garbage and Baby Ben crying ... it's just disheartening.. especially since aquaman and wonder woman were so good.... now I hear thier giving Ezra Mier( flash) a hard time because he doesnt likenthe script and he could walk by may? I think? That's when his wait contract fornthe role is up... but even he is currently writing a script because he doesn't like thier Flashpoint..... idk man.. this all is just unfortunate

Avatar image for wicked_laugh

Should have just dropped the series all together until more of the core DC franchises have been established. Or wait until Flashpoint is finished, cause that's probably going to cause a reboot anyway.

Avatar image for gns

Well, I can't say that I did not like the first Suicide Squad, it just, that... I don't know, it was strange that the government would initially hire hard-core super-criminals to battle the threat of Superman (why is he even a threat? ) and then send them out on a mission to fight some demi-goddess and her demi-god resurrected brother. I mean, what?

Avatar image for Bloodwolf_19

I'm not sure how this will work, but personally I'm hoping they keep some of the original cast/characters they had in the 2016 version. I think the ones wh played Capt. Boomerang, Katana, Diablo, Rick Flag & Harley Quinn did pretty good as their characters. Personally would've preferred to see Harley in her more traditional costume, but still. Otherwise I always thought it would be cool to see more of King Shark and Iris Elba was bad ass as Heimdall so he'll be bad ass as dead shot

Avatar image for mistervulpes

A total reboot of a film that came out 5 minutes ago.

Avatar image for Byshop

@mistervulpes: I'd be more bent out of shape over it if the first film were actually good. I'd rather they get a do-over than try to make a bad sequel to a bad film.

Avatar image for RaveNRolla

@mistervulpes: we live in fast times it seems. but your comment was the 1st thing that came to my mind as well.

Avatar image for WarGreymon77

Hopefully these won't be all tatted up and gross looking.

... Looking at you, Jared Leto Joker.

Avatar image for shadowwarrior4

@WarGreymon77: dont worry hes out of dc hes now gonna screw up morbius from spiderman let sony handle that garbage

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum

i was hoping gunn would make dc universe have more sense but nope. though i guess that since affleck and cavill and who else are gone they simply have to reboot the whole thing

i really wonder what would have happened if marvel panicked after iron man 2 or dark world and let rdj or hemsworth go and decided to flush the whole thing. if dc guys were in charge thats what would have happened and we wouldnt have gotten avengers or winter soldier or guardians or thanos. and stan would have died without his movie dream realized

Avatar image for OtakuD50

So, Task Force X or Secret Six?

Avatar image for Tekcor

You can't make this shit up...
