James Gunn Told Marvel And DC He Wants To Do A Crossover Movie

Gunn has a fun idea but don't expect it to happen.

Both Marvel and DC are pumping out movies, with DC's The Suicide Squad the next film to come out--arriving in theaters on August 6. And during a recent interview on Jake's Takes, director James Gunn revealed he has an idea for a Marvel/DC crossover movie and has mentioned it to the "powers that be." Don't expect it to happen though.

Gunn was asked about the "pie in the sky" dream of a Marvel/DC crossover movie and what characters he'd like to see team up. "I would really be happy to do a Harley Quinn and Groot movie," said Gunn. "That would be exciting for me. And not only have I thought about that, but I've actually talked about that to the heads of both Marvel and DC. Everybody's open to everything but whether anything would ever happen, who knows? The idea of being able to bring Marvel and DC together in a movie, that would be really fun for me. I know it's exciting for even the heads of Marvel and DC to think about."

While the idea has been floated to Marvel and DC, the chances of it coming to fruition is almost a pipedream. "It's something we all like to dream about. Whether we could ever get through the barrage, the Berlin Wall of lawyers we would need to get through to ever make something like that happen, I don't know, but it would be a blast," explained Gunn.

Gunn went on to say he'd also get behind a Rocket, Groot, King Shark, and Weasel movie as well. Considering that Gunn has directed two Marvel movies--the Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2--and a DC movie, if anyone could do it, he could.

The dream of a Marvel/DC movie crossover may never happen, but there have been a few times it's happened in the comics. The two most notable titles are 1996's DC Vs. Marvel by Ron Marz and Dan Jurgens and 2003's JLA/Avengers by Kurt Busiek and George Pérez.

However, the weirdest thing to come out of these Marvel/DC crossover comics is Amalgam Comics. In 1996, the two companies joined forces to put out one-shots featuring characters that were a mash up of two characters, like Dark Claw (Wolverine and Batman), Super-Soldier (Superman and Captain America), and Lobo The Duck (Lobo and Howard the Duck). 24 issues in total came out over the course of the year of Amalgam Comics' existence, 12 released by Marvel and 12 released by DC. And speaking of possible, potential crossovers, NeatherRealm's Ed Boon tweeted in May about Gunn working on both Marvel and DC movies, which has led everyone to speculate that we may see a Marvel/DC crossover video game.

As for Gunn, you can see his latest work, The Suicide Squad, on August 6 in theaters and on HBO Max. In GameSpot's The Suicide Squad review, Mike Rougeau said, "The Suicide Squad is one of the most fun, heartfelt, and surprising modern DC movies we've seen yet. Here's hoping it leads to Warner Bros. taking more chances on talented filmmakers, because the results are something special indeed."
