The Super Mario Bros. Movie is 2023's No. 2 biggest movie, having banked more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Many are expecting a sequel to be announced soon, but it hasn't happened yet. Actor Jack Black, who plays Bowser, told Variety that it has been "radio silence" so far about a sequel.

"The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don't even know if I'm allowed to chatter. I've been chomping at the bit to get back to business," Black said.

Given how much money the first movie made, it seems like there is a commercial opportunity to press ahead with a sequel. Or perhaps Nintendo is spacing out its announcements, as the company did just recently announce a live-action Zelda movie with Sony Pictures. There have also been rumors of further Mario spinoffs, like a potential Donkey Kong movie with Seth Rogen.

For now, Black said he's been thinking about his own ideas for a Mario sequel, which he's calling "Bowser's Revenge." He wants it to be a musical. "I think it should be a full musical, like what Todd Phillips is supposedly doing with Joker 2," Black said.

For what it's worth, Joker 2 is not expected to be a full-on musical but may be more akin to A Star is Born, in that it will have some musical elements but is not a traditional musical.

Also in the interview, Black reflected on the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie's original song, "Peaches," which became a bonafide sensation. Black said he was sent a "30-second nugget of an idea" for what would become "Peaches," and he took it from there. "So I fleshed it out, added some lyrics and melody, and they loved it. And by God, they put it in the film. I couldn't believe they did," he said.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now streaming on Netflix, and it's a pretty good choice if you're looking for a fun family-friendly movie around the holidays.
