It's "60 FPS Or Death" For Project Cars 2

Running at anything lower is unacceptable, Slightly Mad says.

From what we've seen of Project Cars 2 so far, it's looking to be a gorgeous simulation driving game that has enough under the hood to give hardcore fans a lot to play with. It has been a significant effort for Slightly Mad Studios to get Project Cars 2 looking and running so well. We caught up with Slightly Mad COO Rod Chong recently for a wide-ranging interview, one part of which touched on Project Cars 2's graphical abilities.

He told us that Slightly Mad is always looking to dial things up to 11 when it comes to the look and performance of its racing games. For frame rate specifically, Project Cars 2 runs at a bare minimum 60 FPS, because anything lower would mean "death."

No Caption Provided

"You're always pushing boundaries," Chong said. "You're always pushing new rendering features. New areas of the physics engine, which are taxing the processors more. If the performance starts dropping off or the frame rates are not maintained in the way that you want, that can be challenging. Our bare minimum is 60 frames per second. It must be 60 frames per second or death. The feeling of the car is not there [if the frame rate is] below that. Or if you're in VR, you start getting ill below 60 frames per second. We have the optimisation worked out reasonably well now, but certainly there have been so moments where had to really push hard to optimise, optimise, optimise."

Slightly Mad's overall ambition with Project Cars 2 is to make the "most beautiful, most advance driving experience possible," Chong told us. He added that he doesn't see Project Cars 2 so much as a game as it is a racing simulator that professional drivers might even use to hone their on-track skills.

"It's ultimately all about immersion and you always need to be pushing the look of the game," Chong explained. "Simulation racing titles are a bit of an arms race if you look at the different titles out there. I think you can look at what we've achieved with the visuals and it kind of speaks for itself."

Slightly Mad goes to the extreme to to ensure top-notch graphical quality for its games, Chong said. "There is a reason it's called Slightly Mad Studios--seriously."

Keep checking back with GameSpot for lots more from our conversation with Chong.

In other news, Slightly Mad recently talked about how the Xbox One X version of Project Cars 2 will look "significantly better" than the PS4 Pro edition. While Microsoft's new console is impressively powerful, it can't stand up to the rig you could create on PC. But outside of a high-end PC, the best-looking version of Project Cars 2 will be on Xbox One X, Slightly Mad game director Stephen Vijoen said.

Project Cars 2 launches on September 22 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. For more, you can check out all the cars and all the tracks through GameSpot's new videos below.

60fps should be the generally accepted standard in gaming ! PERIOD ! No 'ifs' or 'buts'. I am sick and tired of 30fps cr@p. Not sure if it's cause I am a PC gamer most of the time. But come on... this 2017 and most of the consoles are like PCs with similar components. Good for PC2. I hope they aim for 1080p 60fps across platforms with the PC getting slightly more bump with 4K textures.

60 fps at the cost of graphic details and resolution then. You can optimise all you want the hardware can only handle so much. That's true regardless how powerful your hardware is depending on the game your running and what settings you run it on. So at one point you have to make decisions about what to cut back on. It's always going to be about balancing fps, graphic details and resolution. So if you go all out on fps you will have less power left for graphic details and resolution. So your game will be very smooth (provided you don't have stuttering because of too many assets loading for the cpu, ram or vram to handle) but not look as good as a 30 fps game with higher graphical detail and resolution. So you could end up having a game not looking much better than last gen but run smoother. If you lower resolution too much also to get more fps then your game will look blurry. Then you end up with 60 fps frames of blurry objects. Balance is key I would say. So if optimising means balancing those factors to get the best looking game at a target frame rate then fine but sacrificing everything for the sake of a high frame rate is a bit stupid. You might as well remove shadows and colours and all effects in the game and have bare polygons running at high frame rate at 480p.

Pls dont talk about fps . I am playing Forza horizen 3 on pc 4k at 30 fps and it is perfect . I love it. You just go and make a good gameplay because project cars 1 didnot have a good single player campaign.

@rezagtxgamespot: indeed. Ocarina of time ran at 20 fps when it came out according to what I read online. Still a lot of people considered it a great game, even today, because of the gameplay, story, etc. People were not focused on what fps it ran at. For me personally I am more concerned about the gameplay rather than fps or resolution. In terms of importance for me it's; gameplay and story, graphics settings, resolution and fps last. For me gameplay and graphics settings/quality is what immerses me more rather than fps. But of course there are limits and I will not accept to play a game that runs constantly below 30 fps. I trust the devs to provide the right balance of all these things. On pc of course we can balance it ourselves.

Good. 60fps minimum should be every dev's standard.

Racing games are pretty easy to run, there's not a lot of moving parts which is why there's always a shiny new racer at every console launch to show off the new graphics. Going open world could introduce a few more challenges but closed tracks means a pretty limited range of assets to hold in memory.

@khanwashere: Sure, turn based games like Civ don't really need high framerates but they still feel smoother. Almost anything else is objectively better at 60fps than 30. A solid 30 is probably better than wildly varying with an average of 60 but that's not what I'm talking about.

Higher framerates give more responsive feedback to the player, making just about any kind of game feel better. For people who really insist they can't tell or don't care, an option between better graphics or better framerates is always good but for those of us with standards, no game should ever release that can't be played at 60fps or higher.

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: 30 years of games getting along just fine at 30fps... but your special with your high standards. Too bad about living in the clouds.

60fps games looks like sh** on consoles. So does F1 since they went to that as compared to last gen which were beautiful looking games. If i see 60 fps i generally just don't buy the game, because they look awful.

Why don't they save that for these new consoles or PC? Please keep it at a steady 30 frames please on current consoles. I don't want all my games looking like COD.

@jagdedge124: If you think 60 fps looks likes sh** on consoles you clearly haven't played The Last Of Us. Saying you don't want your games "looking like COD" just makes no sense. 60 fps is a closer representation of how we see in real life, hence why the developers are aiming for 60 fps to give a more realistic driving simulator experience.

@lonesamurai1: Remastered or not it's still one of the most visually stunning games on console, and all at 60 fps. What games do you feel don't do 60 fps well? I can't think of any instance where I would rather have 30 fps in a 60 fps title.

@sneakodissa:

I've never played Last of Us, but 60fps makes games look like arcade games. They go to 60fps to improve "performance", but at the risk of worse graphics. That's always the trade off, and on current consoles, it just don't look right..

I don't really care about 30 or 60, if its stable, I'm 100% ok, all I care is the single player part, if they have a good campaign (the first one had not) I may finally buy a street racing game this generation, especially since GT sport is officially out of my list after I saw the terrible single player content, its mostly an online game now :(

this is gonna end so badly.... I mean, yeah, the game does look pretty, but making such promise like "60 fps or death" never ends good for a dev.

@RicanV: GT sucks mud, and Forza is okayish on a not so okayish console because with mostly crappy games (anything that is also on Steam doesn't count). Also both games are exclusives mostly, for Forza it's win10 exclusive(and not on steam). So whatever, at the moment Driveclub is one of the best racing games on Sony console. On PC there are numerous great racing games.

@RicanV: Not really if they **** up with optimization, mean c'mon exclusives make the most out of the single hardware they're supposed to run on and they look amazing on it, while on PC you have to hope you won't have any compatibility issues considering the immense hardware/software arsenal of pc gamers. But the moment that game comes to the PC, you can make it look way better than it was on console and prolly runs better, but that still comes down to your rig.

Why not let us decide as consoles come closer to turning into PC's anyway? I know I'm in the minority, but I'd take more screen textures and higher resolution at 30fps over 60fps any day. To be honest I'd rather take less screen texture and lower resolution at 30fps too. Am I really going to need to build a high end PC just to play games at 30fps?

Patrick Henry said something similar in 1775 by stating "Give me 60 fps, or give me death!" My history teacher was a gamer so maybe that was a typo
