Italian-American group protests Mafia II stereotypes

UNICO National calls for release of mobster simulator to be halted, calling it "a pile of racist nonsense"; Take-Two chairman calls game "socially responsible."

Over five years after the "Hot Coffee" Grand Theft Auto scandal, another Take-Two Interactive title has become a lightning rod for controversy. However, the flap is several orders of magnitude smaller than the hidden-sex-minigame debacle, as it involves a single organization accusing a game of perpetuating ethnic stereotypes.

Those wishing to file a protest about Mafia II were directed to Take-Two's complaints department.
Those wishing to file a protest about Mafia II were directed to Take-Two's complaints department.

This time around, the game is Mafia II, due out August 24 on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Mafia II is in development at 2K Czech (nee Illusion Softworks), the studio behind the first Mafia game back in 2002. The game is set in Empire Bay, a New York-like metropolis, and follows novice mob soldier Vito Scaletta as he rises through the ranks of La Cosa Nostra during the 1950s.

Though similar mob stories have been told before in film (The Godfather, Goodfellas), television (The Sopranos), and games (The Godfather, certain Grand Theft Auto IV plotlines), Mafia II has hit a nerve with UNICO National, the US's largest Italian-American heritage foundation. The organization's president, Andre DiMino, accused Take-Two of "inappropriate and insulting perpetuation of the pervasive and denigrating stereotype of organized crime being the exclusive domain of Italians and Italian-Americans."

"Why would [Take-Two] foist a game on their targeted audience of young people wherein they will indoctrinate a new generation into directly associating Italians and Italian-Americans with violent, murderous organized crime, to the exclusion of all of the other 'mafias' run by other ethnic and racial groups," DiMino said in a statement. "Take-Two is directly, blatantly and unfairly discriminating and demeaning one group to the exclusion of all others. We are demanding they halt release of the game and cleanse it of all references to Italians and Italian-Americans."

DiMino went on to accuse Take-Two of having a "history of perpetrating its violent, sleazy, racist videogames upon an unsuspecting public." He referenced a past controversy caused by a level in the 2002 game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. In it, players were exhorted by an onscreen command to "Kill all the Haitians!" when confronted by a group of machete-wielding criminals from the island nation. Haitian-American leaders took the command as an exhortation to kill all the Haitians in the world and staged protests outside Take-Two's offices in New York City.

In a statement provided to GameSpot, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick rebuffed UNICO and DiMino's charges. "Mafia II tells a compelling story about organized crime in America - a subject that for decades has been featured in movies, television shows and novels. Neither UNICO nor any other organization purporting to represent Italian-Americans has seen or played Mafia II."

He continued, "At Take-Two, we balance our right to free expression with what we believe is a thoughtful and responsible approach to creating and marketing our products. … We will only release a title that meets our standards: as art, as entertainment and as a socially responsible product. We aim to distinguish creative and compelling story telling that advances artistic expression from subject matter that gratuitously exploits or glorifies violence or stereotypes. I fully and completely stand behind our creative teams and products, including Mafia II."

Where were these people when The GodFather movies were released. The fact is that the mob ran most of the country for years thats fact not fiction. Movies, books, games and anything else mentioning them or bringing such acts to light is fantasy based on real world facts. They can say what they want but the first amendment covers pretty much anything they illedge. Hmmm wonder where they were when the famous HBO series ran for so long ..... games are FICTION!! when will people ever learn.

If this game follows everything that happened in the Mafia's long bloody history I don't blame them for protesting... But how come no other ethic group has protested about how video games portray them? It would make the gaming industry look hypocritical because no one complained the about how African Americans or portrayed. Or how in almost every-single shooting game the Russians are involved in something horrific. But on the other hand,,,,it's all about tolerance. And if the Italians don't like how they are portrayed what right do we have to decide for them?

People need thicker skins, seriously. Seems there's always some group out there getting bent out of shape over something somewhere. What, do you want us all to live in a sterile environment where nothing is ever said or done by or to anyone? Like the Eagles said: "get over it!"

Are they still protesting the Godfather and Jersey Shore? If they think that this game is going to "indoctrinate" the kids, don't you think that they'll get these ideas about Italian mobsters from other places anyway, like, I don't know, history? Do they seriously think that the average person is going to think that ALL Italians are like that? After watching the Godfather and hearing crap about Jersey Shore, I still don't.

They're asking them to "cleanse it of all references to Italians and Italian-Americans" but then how could they call it Mafia 2 it would have to be a completely different game. Why can't they have a sense of humour it's only a game. Everyone gets stereotyped somewhere and they have a sense of humour about it. They don't try to get the film, programme or whatever banned.

These protesters are idiots. This game is not a stereotype, its a simulation of organized crime in the 20's. If they are too stupid to acknowledge this part of American history that ACTUALLY HAPPENED, then that makes them the stereotypical jerks, not us.

Just about every racial and ethnic stereotype has been used in games up til now. The Chinese and Japanese mafias, african american gangs, German Nazis, Iraqi and Saudi Arabian terrorists... If anything, the Italians have it easy. The Mafia is almost romanticised in games and films like this. You have the cool old cars, guns, fancy suits, good food, and strong family ties and loyalty. Other ethnicities have already been portrayed in a much worse light.

Guitarist1980 has a good point, why complain anyway,we Italians weren't subjugated, we ruled the cities! Also using that old Dean Martin song was perfect. I was on the fence but that ad sold me.

DeMino is just a brat trying to promote and enhance the italian-american image by being intolerant of any form of media that "misrepresents all Italian Americans". Honestly DeMino has some nerve saying that Mafia 2 judges the Italian American population of America as a whole. Its amazing how self centered people like DeMino are, he should already know that he's just going to be shrugged off and ignored. Why don't they PROMOTE their actual culture instead of whining about games that give a nod to the past events of ONE specific branch of italian american culture.

@Fusco1980 Look at my screen name. That's my real last name. I am Italian and I love the game. A bunch of stupid fat pasta easting WOPs. If they actually didn't do THIS in real life, then it would be different. They should be proud of running New York during this time period. "unsuspecting public." Like people won't learn about this in school? Like people won't watch 'gangster" movies with Italians in it. It's just another pissed off group of people that want money for "damages". ........................................................................................................ Dude the most epic comment of the day.

I bet it was the commercial that got them in this hissy fit. Anyway, you just know that UNICO National is ran by the mob or at the very least accepting donations from them. They gotta down-play their involvement somehow... and I can't wait for this game to come out. I already pre-ordered the limited edition and I can't wait to get it. So soon...

I think us Italians always here all these other ethnic groups complain so we wanted to join the club and be a big bunch of babies. Unless your making light of slavery and using racial profanity, or making racial remarks about the holocaust.. other than those 2 things you have no buisness complaining and please go away.

Speaking as someone with some Italian ancestry, this doesn't offend me one bit. Blows me away really. Where were they when The Sopranos was huge? When The Godfather was released in theatres? The article even cited other games having mafia / mob plots. I can say this for certain. They weren't throwing a fit all those times previous. Aside from that, there are more serious things going on in reality that special-interest groups like this should worry about. Not fictional works. Good grief!

At the risk of coming off as insensitive, this is kind of their own fault. Instead of getting upset every time a form of "pretend" media stereotypes them, why don't they use that anger to express condemnation towards the real problem of organized crime within their ranks, so that something useful can come of it? It reeks of the Muslim organizations that throw a hissy-fit when a movie does the Muslim=terrorist connection but keep their mouth shut when it comes to condemning Muslim fundamentalists.

Some people have to realize that video games are not only for kids. It's a form of entertainment like movies, music and art. There is some forms of entertainment suitable for mature audiences only. As long as it's rated as such I don't care what kind of content is included. IMO your pretty weak minded if your offended by certain content. Just look elsewhere if your so sensitive.

Really? I mean look at how many game could be stretch to cover their view of stereotyping. And yet no one protesting those. It is a video game for entertainment purposes. If you dont like it no one is forcing them to play it and they can prevent their family for having it. Let the rest of us who understand that it is only a game enjoy it. I think their are far worse issue they could be looking into if they want to prevent stereotyping. Seriously.
