Resident Evil: Apocalypse tops box office
Sequel inspired by the Capcom survival-horror title outgrosses its predecessor, earning $23.7 million.
Whether it was because of the popularity of the Capcom games or the appeal of Milla Jovovich killing zombies, Resident: Evil Apocalypse debuted as the top-grossing film last weekend. From Friday, September 10, to Sunday, September 12, the game-inspired horror-action film pulled in $23.7 million on 3,284 screens. That's considerably more than the $17.7 million earned by the first Resident Evil, which was released in 2002. Apocalypse also outdid the $21.7 million first-weekend gross of another big-budget game adaptation, 2003's Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.
