iPad mini hits Nov. 2 for $330

Apple finally confirms long-rumored smaller iPad revision; 7.9-inch Wi-Fi 16GB model hits early next month; fourth-generation iPad also announced.

Apple had more than a little to share during its media event today in San Jose, California, which was attended by GameSpot sister site CNET. The Cupertino technology giant finally announced the long-rumored iPad mini today, but that was not all. The company also took the wraps off a fourth-generation iPad, less than a year after the "new iPad" was announced.

As for the iPad mini, the device boasts a 7.9-inch IPS display and measures 7.2mm in thickness. A Wi-Fi-only version goes on sale November 2 beginning at $330. A 32GB model will be available at launch for $430, with a 64GB iteration launching at $530.

A 16GB Wi-Fi/4G iPad mini will hit shelves on November 16 at $460. Those looking for more memory can expect to pay $560 for a 32GB model, and $660 for the biggest 64GB iteration.

The iPad mini contains a dual-core A5 processor, a front-facing FaceTime HD camera, and a 5-megapixel camera on its backside. It also makes use of Apple's new Lightning connector, which was introduced with the iPhone 5 in September. Apple says the iPad mini battery will last 10 hours. Preorders begin Friday, October 26.

In what may have been considered a surprise, Apple also announced a fourth-generation iPad model today during its media presentation. The new device resembles the latest hardware revision, which was announced just seven months ago, and contains upgraded specs. The fourth-gen iPad boasts an A6X processor, as well as a Lightning connector, a high-definition front-facing camera, and double the Wi-Fi speed of the past model.

The new iPad will be available beginning November 2 at $500 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model and $630 for a 4G LTE version. Supported carriers include Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T. Preorders begin alongside the iPad mini on Friday, October 26.

@Diamondsoulz so you are blaming Apple for the stupid media covering consumer electronics news instead of real issues? Even if you are, you do realize that you are reading this on a gaming website, do you not?

All of the Android hardware makers have already produced tablets in the 6 to 8 inch range. Samsung, HTC and Motorola should all gang up and sue Apple for this.

@rarson @johnny_pay And The Beatles were inspired by Harry Nilsson, the Beach Boys and Chuck Berry...but they just made it "look cooler" as you say. It's not like Steve Jobs didn't have his share of copycats. Now I'm not directly trying to compare Steve Jobs to The Beatles however...

Jobs certainly made the company successful, but it wasn't like he was innovating. He was just putting current ideas in a prettier package.

I have to say, the guy was brilliant. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Apple been taking advantage of people for years, with this very expensive stuff. It seems that you go to the store to get the latest one, and before you out the door with the latest one, apple have already anounce another one. The latest generaction of the ipod touch don't even offer a 16GB version, and only the very expensive 32 and 64GB are available for 299 and 399 dollars. We must say no to apple, cmon everybody let's start a movement and stand to apple and say noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I have a lowly Nook Tablet, with a swapable 32 GB MicroSD card. i love the thing, It's not as fancy smancy as an iPad, but I don't need all that at the price they are asking. I mainly wanted an e-Reader with extra functionality for any of my own movies I wanted to put on it and other pics and documents. I'm glad they priced the iPad mini so high. Maybe my Nook will have more life before I move on to another tablet. ;)

I'd hold onto the Nook for a bit (they're nice little devices), but the new Kindle Fire HD is similar in size and has a very nice screen. It starts at $199 for the 16GB version, so it's a lot cheaper than the Mini. If I were looking for a replacement for a Nook, I'd probably go with that. Although, judging from pictures the Kindle is probably a bit bigger than the Nook.

For the price of a bottom-end iPad Mini, you could actually get the 8.9" Kindle Fire HD, with 1920 x 1200 screen(!) and still have money left over.

That's crazy.

@suprsolider Actually, I'm not. I'm an Apple fan and am very let down by this uninspired resized rehash of the same concept. I love Apple for introducing the iMac, the iPod and yes the iPhone. It changed the way I do my daily living, organization, music writing/ recording, etc. And whatever to the "hp (or whoever) was doing this way before Apple blah blah", I'm not posting to be convinced Apple isn't an inovator or whatever Apple hate likes to spew on message boards to kindly inform the public. All I want to say is "Boo! Apple!!" I'm afraid your magic died with Steve Jobs and I wanted to believe that wouldn't be the case. You released a slightly longer iPhone 4s (you call it 5), a new OS that has way too many instabilities to be out of beta testing, Siri which could be cool if it didn't F up 50% of what I say, and now...Woo!....a smaller iPad to wow your fans with a "we got one more thing to show you" catch line that you don't deserve to say. You should have blown us away with something that could be "revolutionary", not your priority of "resulotionary". I wont be buying your smaller iPad, your larger nano or your iPhone 5 for $500 (when "new subscribers" get to have it for half the price. Must...continue...rant!) and while I know that phone companies are more to blame, I think it's really crappy of both of you to not reward your longtime customers who have been buying your rehashed innovations for many years.) Ok, I'm done. But OP, F U! My junk is staying dry tonight. F U to Apple and F U to pretty much everyone!!! Agghh (drop mic)

It's not like it's a terrible product (other than running iOS), it's just overpriced. Why would anyone buy this when they could buy a Kindle Fire HD for $199? I can think of two possible reasons: they care about the brand/image/form factor more than technical aspects, or they buy Apple regardless of the price. I know many Apple owners that I've met didn't even seem to consider the price of competing non-Apple products. They just were never even part of the thought process.

Steve Jobs didn't really do anything magical other than creating this image of Apple products being elegant, sought-after things. They somehow managed to sucker a bunch of people into buying their nonsense about how Apple products cost more because they're better quality or more reliable, when in the reality it seems the opposite is true, or at the very least Apple is no better than their competitors.

Apple's best new product is probably the iPhone 5, because as good as the iPad is, the iPhone does it all in a phone, which is much more difficult. The iPhone 5 uses Apple's first self-created SoC architecture and is really good hardware for their first product. It makes you wonder what they're capable of next.

The problem is that along with Jobs' branding, you also get his iron fist in the form of iOS. I know plenty of people like iOS just fine, but I really find Android much more powerful and customizable while still being easier to use. iOS needs to be jailbroken to be useful.

As a result, because of the software, I refrain from buying Apple products. I also dislike the proprietary connectors; every single electronic device made in this age should have some kind of USB port on it standard. Even if they weren't charging a premium for the Apple logo, I still wouldn't buy their products because I don't like the software. It's unfortunate, because I'd love to have an iPhone 5 running Android (with a micro-USB port on it).

Just seems like too much of a hassle to me. Using Windows is just so much more convenient. That's the same reason I don't bother running Linux.

I thought Vista was terrible and I actually stuck with XP for a while, until 7 came out and I tried it and was very impressed. There are a ton of useful changes to the OS. Having said that, it seems like 7 is feeling the bloat at this point in its life, and Windows 8 is looking pretty sexy in comparison. Unfortunately, I feel like Microsoft can't combat the bloat because they're constantly updating the operating system, because it's the biggest target for malware with so many people using it. I guess that's one reason they'll have to keep releasing generational updates.

By the way, Apple is getting out of the computer business. OS X will be merged into iOS and their MacBook Airs will be using custom Apple SoCs, just like the iPhone and iPad. They've already started making OS X more iOS-like. They can make more money selling yearly iterations of consumer devices than they can on selling computers that will take years to replace.

@rarson Haven't messed with 7. By that time, I had already converted completely at work and home (pretty much around Vista). I personally haven't had much problem trouble shooting and getting my OS exactly the way I want it. But I don't dive deep into customization since that's not really what I use it for. Gaming is the one area Mac has never been good at (and I don't consider Angry Birds gaming). But now I'm playing some pretty games via steam and don't have that much to complain about. And of course, I can always bootcamp for those needs.

Ugh. I've used OS X for a while, and while it's not that hard to use, it's much harder to troubleshoot and fix. It's also less intuitive, which is exactly how I feel when I compare iOS to Android.

If you like the style of OS X, that's fine, and I kinda get it. But if you like having control over the system, then OS X doesn't cut it. And honestly I can't stand their mice. I need 5 buttons and a wheel on my mouse. One button is not good enough.

I just don't understand how someone could use both to familiarity and want to stick with OS X afterwards. Of course, I'm talking about Windows 7, so maybe if you haven't tried it, you don't know how much better it is.

@rarson I agree mostly with everything you said. As for Steve Jobs, I don't care about the different opinions I hear about him. As an Apple fan, I know there were a lot of doubters regarding the success of Apple if Steve ever left as Apple prospered under his direction and sank to the bottom with his absence, so Apple has a lot to prove is all I'm saying. I liked him and did think he was a revolutionary thinker, but I could give two craps if people hate his guts (apparently a lot do).

To keep people (fan boys if you like) confident in their brand, they need to pull off something better than upgraded reiterations with little innovation. Not to suggest they shouldn't keep their product line current, as they did, but they need to do more.

At the end of the day, Apple won me over with their software. I was a windows user for many years and the switch to mac os was a pleasant one for me. It was a different mind set that I liked. Love their mail/ cal/ address book in comparison to outlook, love iPhoto, garageband, keynote and many others. I even liked the mac versions of MS software better like word and excel. That's why "I" buy Apple. Not for brand or looking cool as many seem to suggest. I also LOVE my macbook air and so does pretty everyone that plays with it at work. They can't wait to get one.

When comparing it to "older" models, I still don't see a considerable improvement or set of changes yet. I also think that Apple needs to be careful and stop releasing so many new models in such a short space of time. Otherwise it runs the risk of pissing off its consumers by rendering their recent purchase as "outdated". Despite all that, I find the iPad to be an entertaining little time killer; albeit a slightly pricey one. I mean, $100 for 32GB? That is a bit much by today's standards.

@kavadias1981 I agree 100%. my iPad has been great for work and bathroom entertainment. However once I bought the macbook air, I pretty much stopped using it all together. It almost just as portable and light and does everything the iPad can't. But Apple is starting to piss me off with these uninspired releases. I can't justify spending $500 to upgrade my 4s to a 5. Now if I got the same deal "new subscribers" get at $249 (I think), maybe I would think twice about that.

I can't really blame Apple. It's the countless, mindless drones that still buy whatever they put out, so why wouldn't they capitalise on that? It's just good business. Do I wish things were different? Hell yes. But if the ignorant want their next slice of bliss in a smaller package, what the hell. It doesn't affect me.
