iPad mini hits Nov. 2 for $330

Apple finally confirms long-rumored smaller iPad revision; 7.9-inch Wi-Fi 16GB model hits early next month; fourth-generation iPad also announced.

Apple had more than a little to share during its media event today in San Jose, California, which was attended by GameSpot sister site CNET. The Cupertino technology giant finally announced the long-rumored iPad mini today, but that was not all. The company also took the wraps off a fourth-generation iPad, less than a year after the "new iPad" was announced.

As for the iPad mini, the device boasts a 7.9-inch IPS display and measures 7.2mm in thickness. A Wi-Fi-only version goes on sale November 2 beginning at $330. A 32GB model will be available at launch for $430, with a 64GB iteration launching at $530.

A 16GB Wi-Fi/4G iPad mini will hit shelves on November 16 at $460. Those looking for more memory can expect to pay $560 for a 32GB model, and $660 for the biggest 64GB iteration.

The iPad mini contains a dual-core A5 processor, a front-facing FaceTime HD camera, and a 5-megapixel camera on its backside. It also makes use of Apple's new Lightning connector, which was introduced with the iPhone 5 in September. Apple says the iPad mini battery will last 10 hours. Preorders begin Friday, October 26.

In what may have been considered a surprise, Apple also announced a fourth-generation iPad model today during its media presentation. The new device resembles the latest hardware revision, which was announced just seven months ago, and contains upgraded specs. The fourth-gen iPad boasts an A6X processor, as well as a Lightning connector, a high-definition front-facing camera, and double the Wi-Fi speed of the past model.

The new iPad will be available beginning November 2 at $500 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model and $630 for a 4G LTE version. Supported carriers include Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T. Preorders begin alongside the iPad mini on Friday, October 26.

I could care less about the iPad mini since that is just a smaller model of the one I bought in June but seeing that an iPad 4 is coming out when the last model came out last spring is pretty much a slap in the face. And Apple wonders why people are pissed off with them.

@ad1x2 Releasing a superior product mere months after your purchase isn't a slap to the face. Companies release new and modified technologies multiple times a year. The ipad 4 doesn't change your ipad at all, only your perception of your ipad. That's not Apple's fault.

@ad1x2 Well considering even the new, new ipad coming out still runs on pretty shit hardware, you can expect the ipad 5 to come out 8 months later. They can do it because nothing they use in them is new, so they just wait till the old generation stuff goes on sale, buy that up, and put it in their latest ipads. Since no one else actually uses good shit in their tablets, it doesnt really matter.

@ad1x2 Never did understand "Apple hate." They release quality hardware on a consistent basis and they sell like crazy. If you have a problem with the company then don't give them your money. Simple. I don't own any Apple products so I don't have a REASON to "hate" them.

@IAMTYLERDURDEN I never said i hated them, I just said it sucks that the current iPad is getting replaced less than eight months after its release. The previous models had a year apart, which isn't that much time either.

@ad1x2 Best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.

If anyone was paying attention, they'd know a new, updated version of the iPad (5?) will also be released in approximately 12 months. And so on.

@q-bert39 The point is really more that they're destroying games for everyone else.

I sort of thought that was fairly obvious.

To those people who think whether consumers will buy this device even though other tabs at this range is cheaper and have way better features then this. The answer is yes. I personally know some people who bought 2 Iphones when they first came out . One phone was for themselves and the other one was so that they can open it up and show it to people and tell them how "GREAT" APPLE is. Looks when this thing comes out I will not leave the house, unless I want a lecture on Apple :{

This is not an innovation, rather trying to copy the 7inch tab market already dominated by nexus 7 or galaxy note. I would rather buy a surface tab or note 2 than this.

I love all the scrubs who have no clue about Apple products or technology in general. The iPad Mini is designed to fight the 7 in tablet market. It has a superior OS to the Nexus, allowing it to show more information when browsing the web with more detailed web pages, it has a higher quality app system, it is stable unlike the android tablets that freeze and continually have to be reset and or rebooted. It has the best ecosystem on the market which allows you to use it at home with your computer, tv, and airplay system. You can mirror your content with an Apple TV. You have everything the Kindle has with books and reading. You also have the best slew of accessories allowing you to use it at school, college, work, or home and with the iOS version of iWork, you can create word documents, keynote presentations, and Numbers allowing for spreadsheets. The iPad Mini is Superior to any 7 in tablet on the market and you all complaining about it's price.. Apple is not price oriented.. they are value oriented. The Value and Solution of the iPad in any user catagory is superior to any other product. Apple also has the best customer support in the market.

Also.. haha Apple has the best resell value.. So when you upgrade that iPad or Mini.. You will get close to 75% of your investment back and you can upgrade any time you want.

I am so glad I staked-out Apple's Refurbished store to get my iPad. Its like new and cost less than this so-called "mini". C'mon, Apple...if youre really attempting to bite into Kindle or Nook's market, you need to get realistic on price. Anything above $200 is just not worth it...my refurb-ed iPad 2 was less than what these mini's are going for, and its got the bigger screen.

SO glad I didnt wait around for this crud to be introduced.

So the people who just got the iPad 3 are outdated already. If I was one of the audience in the event I would throw my iPad at the presenter's face for releasing a new one just six months after the 'new iPad'

@amaan4ever The ipad4 doesn't change the ipad 3 at all. Why would you throw and break something that you liked last week, but for some reason don't any longer? The only thing this announcement makes outdated is your perceived value of your purchase.

@amaan4ever The Ipad mini is not meant to replace the current Ipad. It is marketed to the people that want a tablet but don't want to pay more than $500 bucks directly competing with the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7.

I wouldn't say "directly," the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 are both much cheaper than the Mini.

@amaan4ever They're also revising several of their other product lines. Among these, you'll see the traditional iPad is being revamped with upgraded features.

@amaan4ever Completely agree. I know it has been (with Apple) kind of ridiculous for a while now with their upgrades but this is out of control. At least to this point we could expect a year, now its half of that time.

how stupid are people to keep buying these things. its a smaller ipad so basically an iphone.. without the phone..seriously if apple released a new version every month with about half a centimeter difference people would still buy it. oh the stupidity that allows money milking seems to be endless.

no lie I was considering picking one of these suckers up until I saw that price, 330 is still too much when the 200 dollar tablets are perfectly good and better in some ways too. Guess I'll definitely be getting one of the w8 tablets now
